You must finish your session at CESL. If you have any other immigration (I-20) questions, please see Amber in CESL 101.

Response: with regards to student council activities, please see “responsibilities” below. If you are interested in fun activities, please
see #7 below (activities and clubs).
40A: The Representative reported that many students smoke right outside the CESL doors which is uncomfortable for nonsmokers. Also, there are problems with a broken door in the men’s bathroom.
Response: Smokers have to be at least 25 feet (8 meters) away from the doors. Teachers and students alike should remind the
students of this rule. Also, Jeremy called facilities management about all bathroom-related issues.
40E: The representative asked whether there was a video game club at CESL.
Response: Not yet! If you have ideas for a new club, please talk to the student activities workers in the student lounge, or the student

40 and above. If you are interested, please email [email protected].

Responsibilities of Student Council members
The Student Council is the voice of the students. Participation in the Student Council gives members a chance to
demonstrate leadership skills and practice English. Council members show a commitment to making CESL as good as
it can be for students and for people visiting the program.
The responsibilities of the council members are to:
 listen to their classmates and report their ideas, suggestions, and concerns
 report on the discussions in Student Council meetings to their classmates
 help students understand how to deal with complaints and problems
 promote participation in CESL activities
 help new students
 serve as guides for CESL visitors
 help keep the Student Lounge (room 202) clean and tidy
 serve as hosts at the Closing Ceremony
 contribute to the CESL Newsletter
CESL student values
Respect
Community
Effort
You support these values when you
 Speak English (it’s our common language)
 Are friendly, smile and say “hello”
 Take turns speaking in class
 Are tolerant of differences
 Ask questions, be curious about other cultures
 Don’t laugh at classmates’ opinions or mistakes
Q: I’m not happy with the lesson in class, what can I do? I would prefer a different due date for weekly
homework assignments, what can I do?
A: Talk to your teacher when you have concerns about the topic and coursework or about due dates.
Q: I would like less homework, what can I do?
A: Again, talk directly to your teachers about homework requirements for the courses. Also, ask for help in time
management, making priorities, and strategies for doing homework in less time.
Q: I have a problem with a specific teacher, what should I do?
A: If students have a personal problem with a teacher they should talk with the teacher first to try to solve the
problem. If this is not possible, they should talk to an Associate Director. Finally, if the problem continues, it is
possible to make a written complaint. See the Student Handbook on page 48 regarding the “grievance process”.
Q: I have questions or problems about my schedule, what can I do?
A: Students should know that 1) students do not set their own schedule in US universities but take courses as
needed 2) students are scheduled according to many factors. (time, repetition, teacher load, etc.). All students
are informed prior to coming that they will have 20-22 hours of instruction per week and that their classes will
occur between 8 am and 7:30 pm. Refer to the IEP web page at: http://www.cesl.arizona.edu/intensiveenglish.htm.
Q: Will we have a Closing Ceremony at the end of the session?
A: CESL holds a Closing Ceremony at the end of Fall Session II, Spring Session II and the Summer Session.
Q: How can I find out more about the Director’s or Global Citizen Award?
A: See Jeremy in office 200.
Q: How can I find out more about the CESL endorsement?
A: See the CESL website at http://www.cesl.arizona.edu/endorsement.htm and/or see Steve Randall, office 208.
Q: Do I have to buy my textbook?
A: Yes.
Q: Can CESL get a snack and/or soda vending machine or lockers?
A: CESL is located in a historic building and cannot place a vending machine or lockers in the hallway because of the
strict rules for historic buildings.
Q: Is there a coffee pot I can use?
A: Yes, there is a coffee pot in the student lounge you may use. It is up to CESL students to bring coffee and keep it clean if
they want to use it.
Q: My teacher does not end class on time. What should I do?
A: Talk directly to your teachers about your concerns in the classes. Teachers sometimes need polite reminders too.
Q: My classroom is too hot (or cold). What can be done?
A: The UA Facilities Management controls the heating/cooling systems, not CESL. These problems should be reported to
Melissa Weber in room 101.
Q: Where can I smoke?
A: You may smoke 25 feet (about 7 meters) away from any UA building.
