Introducing… Fabricio Pontin and Tatiana Vargas Maia
Apresentando… Fabricio Pontin e Tatiana Vargas Maia
KNOW NO
BOUNDS
Fabricio and Tatiana came to study at SIU, where they both completed
their PhDs. They were looking to expand their research opportunities,
and they won Fulbright scholarships to attend SIU.
Studying at SIU was a very positive experience for this husband and
wife team, particularly because of the opportunities. Fabricio was
able to work in a research center and to learn about institutional
exchanges, grant writing and just the insides of the academic machine.
“Working in the Phenomenology Research Center was not part of
my plan when I got to SIUC, but being able to participate in it was
absolutely fantastic.”
Regarding faculty members, they felt they were really lucky to have more
than just a professional relationship with their advisors. They decided
that one professor in particular modeled the kind of professional they
want to become in the future. They were also glad they got to interact in
friendly, and not just professional, terms.
Both Tatiana and Fabricio feel the services that international students
receive at SIU are extensive. Everything from immigration counseling
to academic support and community connections are provided. They
stressed how wonderful the staff and volunteers at the Center for
International Education are. They note that they are, “without a doubt
some of the most amazing and kind people we have ever met.”
no Centro para Educação Internacional (Center for International Education).
