Brazilian Universities Fair
Mr. Drenth “I'm a widow but as the play progresses I get engaged and then married to Mr. Bumble, the man who runs the workhouse with me. My interactions with Mr. Bumble are very comical.” Isadora da Nobrega plays Widow Corney. “I'm the music director for Oliver! The best part is that I get to lead the singers and the orchestra to play the music with exactly the type of feel I have in my head.” Mr. JP Neves, Music Director. “I´m playing the ferocious, relentless and evil villain from the novel Oliver, Bill Sikes. Although I think this role has nothing to do with my personality in real life, I really do enjoy playing such a different character.” Ronald Nazário de Lima plays Bill Sikes. Celebrating success IGCSE Results NOVEMBER, NOVEMBER,2015 2015 #333 #334 On 18th November, we held our annual IGCSE celebration assembly in the secondary school. This is a moment where we look back with pride on the accomplishments of our current DP 1 students. We also take a glimpse at some of the numerous other ways that DP 1 is contributing to our school community. This year, amongst all the students honoured, we were pleased to note the achievement of Nikolas Alves da Costa e Silva who earned six A or A* results. Overall, 12 students achieved three or more grades of A or higher - these results are higher than previous years. During the assembly, we also heard about several CAS projects involving our DP 1 students, and about their involvement in the school community - in the Student Guild and the Young Entrepreneurs ECA. They have proven themselves to be a very well balanced group, and we are looking forward to seeing their achievements in the IB Diploma! Mr. Arcidiacono NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 "It was interesting to see the teacher's perspective on having a blog” Recently a group of MYP 1 pupils visited the regular Secondary staff meeting after-school on Tuesdays to give a lesson to the teachers. They were there to present and talk about the blogs they have created in Design. It was a wonderful experience for the teachers to hear about what the MYP 1s have been doing and develop their own blogging skills as well. This year MYP 1 pupils will participate in Student-Led Conferences in April where they will show their learning and development over the course of the year. MYP 1 pupils are familiar with this event as they have done it for several years in Primary. The Blogs they have created will be the medium of communication that they will use to conduct their Student-Led Conference. Currently they have posted several times and have various examples of the work they have completed this year. By the end of the year their Blog will be a rich resource of their learning. Parents are encouraged to sit with their child every so often to look at their Blog and accompany their progress. A special thank you to Pieter Scheij, Joao Ribeiro, Mariana Rivero, Joao Vieira, Eva Goethals, João Henriques and Luiza Zancan. Mr. DeMelo Teacher For a Day "It was scary in the beginning but in the end we felt comfortable with the teachers” "I enjoyed being able to teach the people that teach me" NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 Mexico Exchange Trip Seven of our brave PYP 8 students participated in the Mexico Student Exchange programme. They spent 10 days in Mexico living in the home of a Mexican family and understanding their daily routine, customs and celebrations. St. Francis has participated in this student exchange programme for over 8 years and we pair up with the Olinca school in Mexico city which is also an IB World School. Children were very well received by their host families and we look forward to hosting 12 Mexican students in March! Our brave explorers have brought back many pictures and experiences which they will be sharing with their peers in assembly soon! Congratulations to Gabriel Frutuoso (PYP 8 Omega), Eduardo Matos (PYP 8 Sigma), Thomas Schrappe (PYP 8 Sigma), Manoel Lopes (PYP 8 Sigma), Antonio Bonito (PYP 8 Sigma), João Chaccra (PYP 8 Beta), Victoria Martins (PYP 8 Beta) for taking part in this amazing experience! Thank you Ms. Vanessa Torlai for accompanying the group! Mrs. Giannetto NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 We had a fun week in the Early Years and Primary with maths and science! The week started off with a presentation by “Mad Science”. It was a very engaging experience for children who watched and participated in some very interesting science experiments. Mid-week the PYP 5 to 8 pupils took part in a “Around the World House competition”. In groups, children had to solve problems to get points and travel around the world. Here are the final results: Pinheiros Condors st 21 (1 ) Eagles Falcons 18 (2 ) nd 11 (3 ) Eagles Falcons rd Jd Europa Condors st 32 (1 ) rd 16 (3 ) 26 (2nd) Eagles Falcons Both Campuses Together Condors st 53 (1 ) rd 34 (3 ) 37 (2nd) Throughout the week children had time in the afternoons to explore a science or maths concept of their choice. They investigated a magnitude of concepts and presented it then to their peers from other classes at the end of the week. A great week of learning! Mrs. Giannetto Art of the Month Primary – Pinheiros NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 PYP 4 Beta - Mural Painting As part of their inquiry PYP 4 Beta students were asked to select geometrical forms that they related to and then consider drawing them next to other contrasting shapes. After making this exercise in their ARB they were then encouraged to work in a group and arrange larger forms on a flat surface and paint them in to create both balance and harmony. Mr. Concagh Art of the Month Primary Jardins PYP 6 - Weaving on a Mini Loom Julia Santiago PYP 6 Omega (top picure) - weaving on a mini loom using blue, yellow and red wool. Alice Zelmanovits PYP 6 Sigma (bottom picture) weaving on a mini loom using black, yellow and red wool As part of their unit of inquiry students were encouraged to identify the origins of weaving and understand that certain cultures and organizations around the world continue to use handmade textiles to make clothing. Julia and Alice were able to include strong contrasting colours of wool and make a three layer weave on a mini loom. Mr. Concagh NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 PYP 1 Delta Art of the Month People use and create tools to solve problems. Josephine Pedersen – “Me holding a hairdryer” Matheus Vercellino “ Me holding a screwdriver” As part of their unit of inquiry PYP 1 are looking at how people use different tools to solve problems. For this particular activity PYP 1 Delta were asked to portray all of the features of their body which included them holding a tool of their choice. Josephine and Matheus were very careful to include lots of details and make a creative painting using as much of the paper as possible. Mr. Concagh Theatre Visits This week St. Francis pupils had a chance to watch live theatre productions. PYP 1 to PYP3 went to watch “Chapeuzinho Vermelho” by Cia. Le Plat du Jour and PYP5 to PYP7 went to Teatro Alfa to watch “Viagem ao Centro da Terra” by Cia. Solas de Vento. Pupils had a chance to talk to the actors at the end of the performance. Some of their questions were: "How long did it take to put on this performance?", "Why did you choose to become an actress", "How many times did you perform this play?" "Do you like being an actor?", "What is inside grandma's house?" One big goal in Drama is to watch real productions and be able to identify elements and themes explored in class. We believe that this broadens their cultural awareness, allows for judgements, enhances their performance skills and sparks enthusiasm and passion of this art form. Mrs. Caselli and Mrs. Schachter MUSIC OVERVIEW NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 Lunch time Concerts Last Thursday we enjoyed some excellent performances during our Lunchtime Concert series! Thanks to Sampa Groove Section, Camerata Concertino, MYP5 Music, DP2 Music and the great variety of individuals and small groups that took part. Quality and energy were top shelf! Mrs. de Carteret Volleyball championship NOVEMBER, 2015 #334 The Varsity Volleyball tournament was created by Renata Lemos for her personal project. The Hawks finished in 2nd place. Well done!!! Mr. Muratcea Dance. Dance. Dance. During weekly dance lessons, PYP 1 to PYP 8 are involved in creating and presenting choreographies based on a range of musical genres and movement styles. Pupils and teachers evaluate and appreciate performances in order to enhance enjoyment and to develop knowledge and understanding of dance. The focus of all dance units for these year levels is to: · Enable pupils to experience the expressive power of dance · Recognise and nurture children’s creative and aesthetic talents · Allow them to develop skills and techniques that are relevant to Dance and across the arts capacities · Provide opportunities to deepen their understanding of the wider world cultural aspects of dance. Please take a moment to talk with your child about what we are currently learning in Dance .
