Prefácio
Este folheto é dedicado a todos os pais ou tutores, que
tiveram dificuldade em acessar o sistema de ensino,
devido a uma barreira idiomática.
O folheto tem como meta ajudar os pais, as
instituições de pré-escola e os intérpretes a transpor as
dificuldades relativas à comunicação, fornecendo
informação útil sobre o ensino de maternal em
Lincolnshire e explicando como sua criança pode
acessá-lo.
Nós esperamos que este folheto contribua para prover
uma qualidade de vida melhor para todos os membros
da Comunidade Portuguesa.
Entendemos e
reconhecemos a frustração tanto das escolas, como
das famílias, em achar um ponto comum para se
comunicarem e esperamos, de algum modo, construir
uma plataforma para que outros a sigam.

Foreword
This booklet is dedicated to all parents/guardians who
have found difficulty in accessing the education
system because of a language barrier.
It is intended to help parents, the pre-school settings
and the interpreters to bridge the gap in
communication by providing useful information about
early years provision for children in Lincolnshire and
explaining how your child can access this.
We hope this booklet will contribute towards
providing a better quality of life for all members of
the Chinese Community.
We understand and
acknowledge the frustration of both settings and
families in finding a common ground to communicate
and hope this will go some way in setting a platform
for others to follow.
We would like to thank The Ethnic Minority
Achievement Support Service (EMAS Service and the
Portuguese families, for their support and enthusiasm
and for making this booklet possible.

EARLY YEARS PROVISION AN OVERVIEW
Types of early years settings







Childminder – self-employed child carers
working in their own homes. Registered
with and inspected by the Office for
Standards in Education (Ofsted);
Playgroup or pre-school – trained staff
offering part or full-time care. Registered
with Ofsted;
Day nursery – usually open all day. Trained
staff. Registered with Ofsted;
Nursery school or nursery class – open at
variable times usually during school hours.
Trained staff. Registered with Ofsted;
After school clubs and holiday play
schemes – fit around school hours for school
age children.
Trained play workers.
Registered with Ofsted;
Children’s Centre – available in some areas
offering all day childcare, early education,
health & family support as well as advice and
information for parents. Trained staff.
Registered with Ofsted;
Nanny – someone you employ to look after
your child.
Sometimes trained but not
registered – so make sure you take up
references.
Algumas Creches e Berçaristas aceitam crianças a
partir de 1 mês e duas semanas de idade. Grupos de
atividades e pré-escolas aceitam crianças a partir dos
dois anos. Todos eles dão oportunidades para que as

Some Day Nurseries and Childminders take
children from six weeks old. Playgroups and
Pre school settings take children from 2 years
old. They all provide opportunities for
children to play and learn. Some have
government funding to provide 3-5 year old
with up to 5 sessions a week during school
term times.
The Family Information Service (FIS) will be able to
give you a list of settings in your local area. You can
phone them on 0800 1951635, e-mail them on
[email protected] or visit their website at

When you have found out about the settings in your
area you can visit them. Some questions to ask the
setting:1. Do I have to pay for my child to come here?
2. How many sessions can my child attend every
week?
3. Is your setting registered with Ofsted?
4. When was your setting last inspected by
Ofsted?

Como você pode ajudar sua criança a se

What can you expect from an early years
setting?

staff who aim to meet the individual needs of
your child;

activities which include active play and rest
time; and

a range of toys, books and play equipment.
How can you help your child to settle?
It helps if you can:

initially stay with your child;

tell staff of any individual needs your child
may have in relation to health, religion,
culture, language etc.; and

take an active interest, such as helping out on
day trips. Sometimes you may be invited to
come to the setting with your child for special
events e.g. plays or sports day. Parents are
strongly encouraged to take part in activities
organized by the setting so that they can have
more
involvement
in
their
child’s
development.

BEFORE APPLYING TO
EARLY YEARS SETTING
What to look for in a quality setting?
To ensure that this is the right setting for your child,
you may want to use the points below as a check list:

the setting is safe, adequately lit and
maintains a good standard of hygiene;

children appear to be happy, content and
actively engaged with what they are doing;

there is a broad range and generous supply of
toys and equipment that children can play
with;

there is a calm area with subdued lighting
where young children can rest and sleep;

there is a comfortable area where children can
relax;

there are toys, books and displays that reflect
and promote different cultures in a positive
way;

there are clean, appropriately sized toilets and
hand basins with individual or disposable
hand towels provided;

there is a secure and safe outdoor recreation
area; and

there is adequate personal space for children
to play and learn.
Preparando sua criança
Você pode ajudar sua criança das seguintes maneiras:

Preparing your child
You can help your child in the following ways:

make opportunities for your child to mix with
other adults and children outside your home;

accustom your child to being left without you;

teach your child to ask for help and express
important needs e.g. when s/he needs the
toilet, feels unwell or wants to try something
new;

praise and encourage sharing with others;

encourage good manners, care of toys and
belongings and expect them to clear up toys
after use;

enable your child to use the toilet
independently and understand the importance
of flushing the toilet and washing hands;

encourage your child to dress and undress
him/herself;

encourage your child to speak clearly and ask
for what s/he needs;

look at and talk about the world around you;

encourage them to answer questions with
words rather than nods and shrugs –
encourage them to use ‘please’ and ‘thank
you’ as well as get used to hearing “no” for
an answer sometimes;


parents are advised to make sure that their
child’s vaccinations are up to date. If you are
unsure then contact your doctor or health
visitor; and

it is always better to use your child’s home
language in preparing him/her to go to an
early years setting.
Remember that all children will develop at different
rates, so do not worry if your child cannot do all of
these.
ADMISSÃO
Admissão para o maternal
Em alguns lugares as crianças são elegíveis para
cursar o maternal de graça por volta dos três anos de
idade. Os pais são fortemente encorajados a se
inscreverem diretamente no local, antes da criança
completar três anos. A demanda por lugares no
berçário e nas aulas públicas locais é alta.
Todas as instituições tentarão satisfazer as
necessidades de todas as crianças. Para crianças com
necessidades adicionais, as instituições poderão obter
apoio e orientação do Serviço de Apoio no Maternal.
Os outros serviços que podem ajudar são o Serviço do
EMAS e o Serviço de Associação de Pais.
Documentos requeridos para admissão
A instituição pode exigir que você mostre documentos
que confirmem a idade e elegibilidade da sua criança.
Estes podem ser um passaporte, certidão de
nascimento, ou carta que mostrem que você tem o
direito de residir no Reino Unido.
ADMISSION
Admission to early years setting
In some settings children become eligible for free
early years provision at around three years old.
Parents are strongly encouraged to apply directly to
the setting well before the child turns three. Demand
for places at local authority nursery settings and
classes is high.
All settings will try to meet the needs of all children.
For children with additional needs, settings can get
support and advice from the Early Years Support
Service.
Other services who can help are the EMAS Service
and the Parent Partnership Service.
Documents required for admission
The setting may require you to show them documents
which confirm the age and eligibility of your child.
This may be a passport, birth certificate or letter
showing that you have the right to reside in the UK.
POR DENTRO DO MATERNAL
Uma sessão típica dura aproximadamente 2 horas e
meia.
Podendo incluir:


AT THE EARLY YEARS SETTING
A typical session lasts approximately 2 ½ hours.
It may include:

registration to record the child’s attendance;

activities such as:
sand & water play, puzzles, mathematical and
language games, painting, cutting & sticking
collage, construction blocks, computer games
and drawing activities;

snack time (milk and fruit/vegetable);

outdoor play (bikes, large equipment etc); and

story time, singing songs/ nursery rhymes.

Roupa adequada
As crianças brincam com pintura, areia, água e cola.
Se elas estiverem usando as suas melhores roupas,
elas podem acabar ficando preocupados em não
estragá-las. Serão fornecidos aventais para as crianças,
mas tente vesti–las com roupas adequadas para estas
atividades.
As escolas mantêm roupas disponíveis para o caso de
que sua criança tenha algum incidente. Por favor,
devolva as roupas à escola lavadas e secas.
É mais prático mandar sua criança à escola em roupas
nas quais ela se sinta confortável e que sejam fáceis
de ela lidar.
Velcros são mais fáceis lidar do que laços e botões.

Suitable clothing
Children play with paint, sand, water and glue. If
they are wearing their best clothes they may worry
about spoiling them. Children will be provided with
aprons, but try to send your child in clothes suitable
for these activities.
Settings keep spare clothes in case your child has an
accident. Please return them to the setting when you
have washed and dried them.
It is more practical to send your child to the setting in
clothes that they feel comfortable in and that are easy
for them to manage.
Velcro fasteners and poppers are easier to manage
than laces and buttons.
Doença

solicitarem mais de dez dias de licença em um ano,
durante o período de aulas. Se sua criança for se
ausentar por um tempo prolongado, por exemplo,
umas férias longas, fale com a escola antes de você
tirar suas férias.
Lanche
São freqüentemente oferecidos para as crianças um
pedaço de fruta, ou legume e uma bebida durante a
sessão.
Transporte
O Conselho do Município de Lincolnshire não provê
transporte para as crianças irem ao Maternal.
Illness
Please inform the setting if your child is ill and you
will not be bringing him/her in that day. If your child
has an illness that could be passed on to others, keep
him or her at home until s/he is fully recovered.
If your child is well enough to return but needs to
complete a course of medication, talk to the setting
first to arrange this.
Absence
The early years setting must receive a written or
telephone message from you telling them why your
child is away. You must also inform the setting in
writing if you are intending to go on holiday during
term time. Early years setting discourages parents
from applying for more than ten days leave of absence
a year during term time. If your child is going to be
away for an extended time, e.g. a long holiday, talk to
the setting before you take your holiday.
Snack
Children are often provided with a piece of fruit or
vegetable and a drink during the session.
Transport
Lincolnshire County Council does not provide
transport to children attending early years settings.

CONCERNS YOU MAY HAVE
General concerns
Your child’s early years are very important. All
children develop in different ways and learn at
different rates. It is possible that your child speaks
more than one language, or is learning how to speak
English.
The EMAS Service and Lincolnshire
Chinese Community Supporters encourage parents to
use their home language when speaking to their
children.
Having English as an additional language will not be
considered as having a special educational need. The
EMAS Service will provide advice to you and the
setting on how to include your child, who may not be
fluent in English.
You may also have concerns about:

talking;

feeding;

toilet training;

walking;

getting on with others;

listening;

behaviour;

vision; or

hearing.
Há muitas pessoas com que você pode falar sobre
suas dúvidas, e que podem lhe ajudar e orientar. Estas
podem ser seus amigos e parentes, assistentes de
saúde, assistentes sociais, médicos ou os funcionários
do maternal.
Falar com estas pessoas pode lhe dar algumas idéias

There are many people who you can talk to about
your concerns, and who are able to give you help and
advice. These may include friends and relatives,
health visitors, social workers, doctors and early years
staff.
Talking to these people can give you some ideas
about how to help your child, including:

play activities for your child at home and in
his or her early years setting; and

keeping a note of your child’s progress
The Parent Partnership Service provides information,
support and advice to parents of children with special
needs and you can contact them on 01522 553351.
Racismo e constrangimento racial
O Ato de Relações Raciais de 1976 e a Emenda do
Ato de Relações Raciais (2000) fazem com que a
discriminação racial seja ilegal. Através de lei, as
Autoridades locais e as escolas têm que prover
serviços que sejam justos e que promovam
oportunidades iguais a todos.
O que fazer se você ou sua criança forem
envolvidas em um incidente racista?
Racismo e constrangimento racial são assuntos que
podem causar muita angústia à família e podem afetar
a educação da criança. Então, não tenha medo de
perguntar à escola sobre política deles a respeito.
O que você deve fazer:



Relate o que está acontecendo ao
diretor da escola,
Peça que o incidente seja investigado
pelo corpo diretor, se apropriado; e
caso você não se sinta à vontade de
relatar o incidente à escola, fale então
com um membro da Comunidade
Portuguesa sobre formas de ajuda e
orientação.

Racism and Racial Harassment
The Race Relations Act 1976 and the Race Relations
Amendment Act (2000) make it illegal to discriminate
on the ground of race. By law, local education
authorities and early years settings must provide
services which are fair and promote equal
opportunities.
What to do if you or your child is involved in a
racist incident?
Racism and racial harassment are issues which can
cause a great deal of distress for the family and can
affect the child’s education. Therefore do not be
afraid to ask the setting for their policy on dealing
with racism and racial harassment should it occur.
What you should do:
 report what has happened to the head of the
setting;

ask for the incident to be investigated by the
management body if appropriate; and

if you feel you are unable to approach the
early years setting, then speak to a Chinese
Community Supporter for help and advice.

Can I take someone with me to talk to the key
worker?
Yes, you can take a friend, a relative or someone who
you trust to interpret for you or support you.
When can my child start?
Different early years settings accept children at
different ages. Please refer to pages 3 and 18.
Is it compulsory for my child to attend an early
years setting?
No, it is not compulsory for your child to attend an
