2010 Antonio Lopes Douro, Portugal Red Blend
2010 Antonio Lopes Douro, Portugal Red Blend Antonio Mendes Lopes is turning winemaking in Portugal on its ear. For centuries, wineries there specialized in sweet Port wines and nothing else. During the 20th century, a number of wineries added dry table wines to their portfolios. And now that Lopes has come on the scene, more and more wineries are taking an entirely different approach to crafting their cuvees. “Having spent many years working in the wine business in Scandinavia, I have a different perspective on Portuguese wine and what can be achieved with modern style combined with tradition,” Lopes says. “We craft our wines for our clients’ taste, rather than expecting our clients to simply like our wines.” It’s a philosophy that works, as the featured red blend from the 2010 Douro growing season demonstrates. Based on four indigenous varieties, the wine is soft, velvety and packed with engaging fruit and spice flavor. As Lopes has proven, different can be good... very good.
