Except where otherwise noted, this work is subject to a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 3.0 license. creativecommons.org Die Veranstaltung ist in zwei Teile gegliedert. Especially learning how to draw a complex landscape situation with a focus on indicators of landscape developments usually takes a lot of time and one serious problem is that the individual learning time varies enormously from one student to another. In this paper we describe an inverted classroom concept to prepare geography students for excursions. The main aim is to foster a self-organized acquisition of relevant skills, techniques and learning strategies to explore, sharpen the view, describe and understand landscape situations. Keywords: inverted classroom concept, virtual drawing course, self-organized acquisition of skills. 1 INTRODUCTION: SOME EPISTEMOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND GUIDING QUESTIONS Constructionist theories dominate the actual discourses on learning. We do not follow the extreme positions of constructivist theories, which confine knowledge acquisition to mere subjectively based constructions, with the idea that a reality outside of our thinking and feeling does not exist. The basis of our research and teaching in eLearning is a soft constructivist position, which conceals an outside reality. We follow the critical analysis of Bennett and Hacker in their book on Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience [1], who stated that we do not see images of mountains, but mountains, or images of roses, or images of animals, but roses and animals. Nevertheless there are different constructivist approaches to an objective reality. A mountainous area might be a good example to demonstrate the broad range of possibilities of perceptional approaches including a geographical one. A hiker analyses a mountain according to accessibility and weather conditions, a young couple feel certain emotions during a sunset, a painter of the eighteenth century presented a different picture than Paul Cezanne might have painted. All these approaches are reductionist. This is also true for scientific approaches during geographical excursions or field-trips. The aim is to put a structured layer on the perceived landscape to develop some hypotheses on the evolution of landforms and their ecological value for to-day´s needs. But how can this be achieved with students in the Bachelor level who had just one course in Physical Geography, and no experiences in field-studies? How can the relation between perception and the terminological fixation of geomorphological elements be achieved? Or in other words: how to achieve an insight in the relation of perception, visualized representations and natural science terminology? Should the approach be more deductive or inductive, more from a theoretical and terminological based class-room approach or from a researcher point-of-view who is confronted for the first time with a certain landscape and environment? And also very important, what is the function of the excursion leader, and how can E-learning, or specific online courses prepare for successful field-trips? We were and are very much aware that to-day´s students have been influenced by the mediatisation and visualization of every day events, including environmental phenomena. Especially in German geographical education there is an emphasis on analyzing but not necessarily synthesizing, or producing of maps or landscape features. Because of the high and intensive impact of visualization in learning, partly enhanced through E-Learning, we were considering a very traditional learning method: landscape drawing during field trips. The class-room with overlays and power-point presentations had more or less abandoned the construction of images by teachers and students. Proceedings of EDULEARN12 Conference. 2nd-4th July 2012, Barcelona, Spain. 2495 ISBN: 978-84-695-3491-5 2 THE DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURE OF A VIRTUAL DRAWING COURSE The development and implementation of a virtual drawing course was a joint endeavor of an artist, who was also teaching drawing courses at the Städel Artist School, the Department of Geography and the E-Learning Centre of the Goethe-University in Frankfurt. The main elements are learning videos, with additional material and exercises which are closely related to the curriculum and syllabuses of the introductory course of Physical Geography. At the beginning we started with the concept of the drawing course. Subsequently the screenplays were written and the video clips recorded in a studio. The recordings, the additional materials, the exercises and examples were integrated into the authoring tool “LernBar”. Finally the course was and is accessible for students over the University´s Learning tool. The course is divided into nine units. The first units refer to basic drawing skills and knowledge which are applicable to all disciplines: 1) material (soft and hard pencils, paper, and setting (see Fig. 1); 2) surface, lights and shadow; 3a) structures, 3b) shading; 4a) lines to structure a surface, 4a) contour lines; 5) idea of projection and exercises for selective perception. The following units have direct relevance for landscape drawing: 6) methods of representations of perspective: measuring, angle, height, 7) definitions and representations of space, 8) threedimensional landscape representations, and finally 9) exercises to copy idealized landscape elements. Recordings, exercises und examples are imbedded in the learning units. The examples taken by the artist refer to drawings of famous artists from different centuries to demonstrate the general applicability of drawing skills and methods. The virtual drawing course may be found at: http://lernbar.uni-frankfurt.de/mdigi/ZFG Fig. 1: The Authoring Tool “Lernbar” with the first unit of the virtual drawing course Fig. 1 shows the first unit with exercises and examples on the left, a recording with explanations and the course navigation at the bottom. Students work with the web-based units independently and at their own speed. Then the first drawings are discussed in class time (Fig. 2). After four sessions with drawing practices at home, a four day field trip follows. During the excursion students use their drawing skills as methodological and practical know-how. 2496 Fig. 2: Discussion of the first drawings in class 3 THE EVOLUTION OF DRAWING SKILLS AND ITS APPLICATION DURING PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHICAL FIELD-STUDIES Within an empirical-analytical learning process the observation of a specific phenomena is the beginning and therefore of particular importance (Fig. 3). In many cases students tend to attribute something they see very quickly with a term or they are overstrained because of the complexity of a landscape and they do not “see anything”. To open up the geographical view for new phenomena and new insights into a landscape development one key element could be not only to see something but to draw and consequently perceive phenomena in a different elaborated way. The necessity to select elements of a landscape within the process of drawing leads to look very carefully, clarify spatial conditions and structure the drawing according to schematic elements. The method of drawing gets a propaedeutic function within learning processes in a way that the students learn how to reduce the multiple impressions and elements into an interpretative structure. The students do not only learn how to structure a complex environment, but become aware that all representations of a given reality are reduced and structured. In comparing their own drawing results with those of other students they realize how difficult it is to produce an inter-subjective valid representation. To our concern this is an important element in teacher education. Fig. 3: Drawing as a method of observation within a research process 2497 The discursive process of defining an inter-subjective valid schematic representation of a landscape unit is closely related with the application of a scientific proper terminology. The question arises how to achieve the knowledge acquisition of the terminology. Usually it is bound to classroom activities which prepare field-trips. According to our experience the transfer of classroom knowledge to the description of an unknown environment is not very successful. The terminology in Fig. 3 implies an epistemological difference between to see and to perceive. To see might be a more neutral or even naïve appreciation of a landscape impression, whereas to perceive is related to an intention, for example to identify certain morphogenetic relevant features. The landscape seen in Fig. 5 was shaped by processes with horizontal elements (caused by semitropical denudation), and by depth erosion during glacial and interglacial times. The students should be able to recognize these two dominate elements and put them into a proper perspective on a piece of paper. One of the main questions is if students are able to build up the necessary competences by working through the virtual course to use drawing skills as a method to observe and understand physical geographic phenomena. It is well known that without specific support drawing skills of adults do not exceed the skills of twelve year old children [2]. Skills do not develop without practice. This is true for many disciplines. Before someone is able to draw a specific (landscape) formation, he has to perceive the element intensively, has to realize the structure of the surface, observe light and shadow, separate important visual information from incidental. These activities during the process of drawing can be a real benefit compared for example with the practice of taking a picture and can initiate reflective observations, new questions, new insights and overall, intensive learning processes. Fig. 4 shows this process of reflection between the activities of observing and drawing. Fig. 3 and fig. 4 transfer the impression that observing, drawing, perceiving, reducing to a relevant morphological scheme is an interrelated process. Our experience so far has shown that not only drawing is difficult, but also to know and apply the relevant terminology. Fig. 4: Moments of reflective cognition and thought between observing and drawing Fig. 5: Practice during the field trip (left) and one of the results (right) 2498 4 RESULTS The evaluation of the concept focuses on questions how students use the learning modules, if it is possible to gain necessary skills to describe complex landscape situations, and if individual learning preferences determines learning outcomes. We explored students’ behavior by the results of a detailed questionnaire, an analysis of the drawings of the students. 4.1 Analysis of the drawings of the students The drawing results of the students demonstrate that the quality of the drawings increased from day to day. At the end of the field trip all results show that geomorphological elements of the landscape could be represented in a clearer way. It remains an open question to what degree the drawing excercises have an impact on the progress of knowledge acquisition in relation to teaching and explanations about landscape processes during the field-trip. But it became obvious that after drawing two landscape features most of the students were able to structure the drawing page, recognise spatial proportions and, this migtht be the technical most difficult, to transfer a spatial three dimensional landscape situation on a flat sheet of paper. The results of the questionaire confirm these findings. 4.2 Questionnaire At the end of the field trip all students answered a questionnaire with two sections, a more general one and one with drawing course-related items. Some items were adapted from an item pool, which was used in former evaluations of the E-Learning Centre of the Goethe-University. Others were rationally constructed. These items were developed to measure students’ self-reported gains in knowledge processing and methodology/presentation competency. The construction of the items based on The Berlin Evaluation Instrument for self-evaluated student competences [3], a well tested and theoretically founded instrument which was developed to provide empirical evidence how far students do in fact acquire the competences which are described within the list of multidisciplinary competences in the ‘framework of qualifications’ of Bologna. The validity of measures of self-evaluated student competences is described e.g. by Lucas and Baird [4]. In the general section, we asked the students about socio-demographic data and their computer and internet use. The questioins on the drawing course were about learning outcomes and competences. The item base was collected during the summer semesters 2010 and 2011. 45 students answered the questions. 62 percent of the students were female and 2/3 of them were between 21 and 25 years old and 1/3 were between 26 and 30 years. 4.2.1 Experiences with the drawing We measured students’ self-reported gains in drawing competences before and after the course (after working with the virtual drawing course and the exercises during the field trip). We found some support for the hypothesis, that students can increase their drawing competencies significantly within a comparatively short time and with the help of guidelines to basic methods (Tab.1). Tab. 1: Self-reported gains in drawing competences. (scale: 1=”very low” to 6=”very high”, M=mean, SD= standard deviation, p=significance level, d=effect size) Competences before the course Competences after the course M SD M SD 2.9 1.4 3.8 1.25 Prae-‐post-‐ difference p d 0.9 0.001 0.69 On behalf of the pre-post-difference on the standard deviation we calculated an effective power of d=0.69, what can be interpreted as 'medium efficiency', according to the classification by Cohen [5]. The results show that students perceive a relevant impact on their drawing competences. The findings can be consolidated by the descriptive statistics of selected items of the questionnaire about experiences and self-reported learning outcomes (Tab. 2). 2499 Tab. 2: Descriptive statistics of selected items of the questionnaire. Scale: 1=’does not apply’ to 6=’does apply’, SD: Standard deviation. All scales are polarized in direction of agreement to an item. Item Mean SD Capability to make a sketch of landscape situations and elements 4.5 1,2 After drawing a landscape situation, it is easier for me to recognize the same phenomena somewhere else 4.2 1.2 I am planning to use drawing in my work as a teacher 4.0 1.3 Appropriate relation of time and increase of drawing competences 4.1 1.3 I would recommend the use of the virtual drawing course to others 4.7 1.2 The high ratings indicate that some of the main objectives could be achieved: to enable students to grasp a landscape situation with a drawing or sketch, to be able to identify typical structures and shapes of a landscape which leads to a transfer competence to identify structures and landscape formations somewhere else. Furthermore it is positive to assess that the students plan to use what they learnt within their profession later on, assess the drawing course as time effective and recommend it to others. 4.2.2 Significant Correlations We conducted correlations between the items of the questionnaire to explore students’ behaviour. Bivariate correlation coefficients were computed by Spearman’s correlation formula [5]. In the following section we discuss significant correlations (r) that have an estimated two-tailed α-error (expessed by the error-probability p) less than 0.05. Our results show that a preference of using the virtual drawing course online (instead of a hardcopy of the course) is associated with the weekly time students spend in front of the computer (r = 0.45; p = 0.04). It is not surprising that students who are familiar in using the computer prefer an online version of the course. In this context, it is worth to be considered that students who use the computer more intensive, rate the difficulty of drawing exercises significantly higher (r = 0.46; p = 0.04). The result could be interpreted as an indicator for decreasing sensomotoric competences of students who spend a lot of time at the computer. Furthermore we found a relevant positive correlation between the age and the self-assessed drawing competencies (r = 0.68; p = 0.001). The older students perceived a significant stronger increase of their drawing capabilities. It is not surprising that those student also would recommend the virtual drawing course stronger than younger students (r = 0.46; p = 0.03). Gender also seems to have an impact on learning outcomes of an acquisition of drawing skill. Females rated their gained competences significantly higher than males (r = -0.45; p = 0.04; code male = 1; female = 2) and therefore it is understandable that females rate the time efficiency of competency acquisition with the course better (r = -0.48; p = 0.02). Summing up, the correlations between the items of the questionnaire gives some evidence to the hypothesis that the benefit of the drawing course is for female and older students higher. It is surprising that we could not find a correlation between the sociodemographic items (gender, age) and motivation. 5 CONCLUSIONS As the results show, basic drawing techniques and strategies to describe complex landscape situations can be gained by web-based learning units in an inverted classroom scenario in an economic and time efficient way. Learning preferences and individual differences have thereby an influence on learning outcomes. 2500 We conclude that in this scenario the web-based learning units are a very good supplement to the field trip. Time would be much too short, to gain necessary skills during the trip. Therefore the concept contributes to a qualitative better understanding of geographical phenomena. The web-based learning units can greatly increase the students' engagement outside of the classroom and thus prepare them for productive work, a sustainable understanding and real discussions by providing the possibility of a self-organized acquisition of skills before the excursion time.
