Briefly revise the political structure of the
German Federal Republic (see
Background). Ask your students to name
as many federal states and their capitals as
they can think of, then list them on the
board. This can be done as a quiz or
contest with more advanced
groups/classes.

family. When students have read and
understood the comic, ask them to describe

The Federal States of Germany
Germany consists of 16 Bundesländer
(federal states). The ten 'old' states
(which formerly made up West
Germany) are Baden-Württemberg
(capital Stuttgart), Bayern (München;
Munich), Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen
(Wiesbaden), Niedersachsen
(Hannover), Nordrhein-Westfalen
(Düsseldorf), Rheinland-Pfalz
(Mainz), Saarland (Saarbrücken),
Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel). The six
'new' states (formerly East Germany)
are Berlin, Brandenburg (Potsdam),
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
(Schwerin), Sachsen (Dresden),
Sachsen-Anhalt (Magdeburg),
Thüringen (Erfurt).

Karl Lagerfeld
Modeland Deutschland
Born in 1938 in Hamburg (Germany),
Karl Lagerfeld is one of the world's most
famous fashion designers. He was born
into a wealthy family, but in 1952 his
mother moved to Paris, taking 14-yearold Karl with her. When he was only 17,
he won a competition for a coat
sponsored by the International Wool
Secretariat. The famous designer Pierre
Balmain was so impressed that he
bought the coat and hired Karl Lagerfeld
as a designer. In the following 30 years,
Lagerfeld worked for labels such as
Patou, Valentino, Krizia, and Chloé,
before joining Chanel in 1983. Here he
became famous for his prêt-à-porter
collections. His designs were often
controversial, and Lagerfeld surrounded
himself with an aura of mystery. His
typical trademarks are his ponytail, his
sun glasses and his elegant suits.

STARTER
Compile a list of terms in connection with
fashion (die Mode) on the board. Make sure
that all key terms from the actual article
appear on the list (or add them yourself):
die Mode, der Designer, das Model, die
Kollektion, die Kreation, kreativ, die Show,
das Label, der Look, die Modemarke, etc.
Point out English words like Design, Model,
Look, Label, and ask your students to look
at the use of the Verb to design in German:
Er hat Strumpfhosen designt. Ask students to
find German synonyms for the English
terms, or provide them yourself, e.g. Model
= Fotomodell, Label = Marke, Design =
Entwurf, etc. Next, ask your class if anyone
knows any German fashion stars. Maybe
Karl Lagerfeld, Claudia Schiffer, and/or
Heidi Klum will be mentioned.
TEXT ACQUISITION
When they are familiar with the fashion
term list, ask more advanced groups/classes
to work individually or with a partner on
the text on page 7 (less advanced students
will need your help). Then ask a volunteer
to take on the part of Karl Lagerfeld (with
sun glasses and pony tail, if possible),
reciting the quotes on page 7 with effect
and emphasis. For text acquisition of pages
8 and 9 divide your class into six groups.
Each group works on one section, and then
one representative of each group reads his
or her text aloud (or reports on it).
To check text comprehension, ask your
students to complete the Kurztest.
EXTENSION
Ask students to fill out the FamilienwortRätsel on page 7 (alone or with a partner).
Which other members of the family can
students name? (e.g. der Sohn, die Schwester,
die Mutter, der Neffe, die Nichte, der Cousin,
die Cousine, der Enkel, die Enkelin, etc).
Students could then draw a tree of their
own family, with themselves in the center
and with branches for parents,
grandparents, siblings, etc. You could
extend this to a home project to enable
students to use their computers to add
photographs and brief descriptions of each
family member (they should use the
superlative forms listed on page 8). Use the
Technisch box for further practice of the
superlative, and also the comparative (Heidi
ist das reichste deutsche Model. Sie ist reicher
als Julia Stegner, etc.)

Write international on the board and ask
your students: Ist das ein deutsches Wort?
(Nein, es ist ein englisches Wort). Next, you
could say: Ja, aber nicht nur – es ist ein
internationales Wort. You could then
practice adjective endings using
international: ein internationaler Film, eine
internationale Bank, internationale
Beziehungen, etc. Ask students to make up
sentences with these terms.
When students have completed the quiz,
ask them to find more Stadtwörter similar
to Bank, Kino, etc., for example die U-Bahn,
das Hochhaus, die Universität, das Theater,
die Oper, das Rathaus. More advanced
students could briefly describe their
Stadtwort, which the others then have to
guess (U-Bahn: Hiermit fahren Leute unter
der Erde. Theater: Hier spielen Schauspieler
vor einem Publikum, etc.).

Using the career of a popular star as a base, we practice several language points.
OBJECTIVES

STARTER
Write Beyoncé's name on the board, asking
your students: Wer ist das? (Das ist eine
amerikanische Sängerin und Schauspielerin).
Next, ask: Wann wurde sie geboren?
Students will mention several possible
years, add 1981 if that year is not included.
You could then briefly revise the passive
imperfect using wurde by asking your
students: Wann wurdest du geboren? (Ich
wurde 1993 geboren, etc.)
TEXT ACQUISITION
Read the introduction with your students,
then ask them to complete the Kurztest
(with a partner). All boxes from 1981 to
2007 are read out aloud by several students.
Correct any mistakes. Which pair has made
no mistakes? This is also a good
opportunity to revise the inversion of
subject and verb, as all sections start with a
figure: 1981 wurde sie in Texas geboren, but:
Sie wurde 1981 in Texas geboren. For further
practice of the inversion students tackle

Wolfsburg
The town of Wolfsburg (population
120,000) is situated in the east of the
state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony).
The town's main claim to fame is the
Volkswagen factory, birthplace of the
Käfer and other famous car models.
Founded in 1938, the Volkswagenwerk
quickly recovered from the ravages of
World War II and increased its
production. By 1957 more than 12,000
people had found employment there.
The original Käfer (beetle) is not in
production any more, but many other
successful Volkswagen models were
launched. Since 2,000 Wolfsburg boasts
an additional attraction for visitors –
the Autostadt. The futuristic
architecture of the complex was a
location for the movie 'The
International'.

EXTENSION
Ask your students to underline all perfect
tenses in the text. Write two sentences on
the board, one with haben and one with sein
in the perfect tense: 1991 hat sie zum ersten

Underline hat and ist and ask students to
name the infinitives (haben, sein).
