For the 8th time, the GDMB held the “EMC – European
Metallurgical Conference”. Just like in 2011, the conference again took place at the CCD Düsseldorf as part of the
metallurgical expert exhibitions GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS, and NEWCAST (Figure 1). Every four years,
the metallurgy industry gets together at these top exhibitions in Düsseldorf, making it an extremely interesting
environment for a conference. The organizers of the four
exhibitions report that the number of 78,000 visitors from
more than 120 countries equaled those of prior years. Especially in Asia, there is immense demand for European
metallurgy and casting technology reflecting the current

Bereits zum 8. Mal organisierte die GDMB die „EMC –
European Metallurgical Conference“. Wie bereits 2011
fand der Kongress erneut im Rahmen der metallurgischen Fachmessen GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS
und NEWCAST im Kongresszentrum Süd des CCD
(Congress Center Düsseldorf) in Düsseldorf statt (Abbildung 1). Alle vier Jahre trifft sich die Metallurgiebranche
zu diesen Messehighlights in Düsseldorf und stellt damit
ein hoch interessantes Umfeld für die Fachkonferenz
dar. Die Organisatoren des Messequartetts berichten,
dass sich mit insgesamt 78 000 Fachbesuchern aus mehr
als 120 Ländern die Messen auf dem Niveau der Vorveranstaltungen bewegen. Insbesondere in der asiatischen
Region ist die Nachfrage nach europäischer Metallurgie- und Gießereitechnik, die den aktuellen Ansprüchen
der Industrie nach Energie- und Ressourcenschonung
entspricht, sehr groß. Die Fachbesucher schätzen es sehr,
dass ihnen hier in Düsseldorf komplette Maschinen und
Anlagen präsentiert werden. Auch die Teilnehmer der
EMC/Pb-Zn hatten die Möglichkeit die Messen im Rahmen der Teilnahme an den internationalen Konferenzen
zu besuchen und sich damit von 2214 Ausstellern inspirieren zu lassen.
Als weiteres Highlight wurde die weltweit renommierte
Fachkonferenz Pb-Zn zum ersten Mal in Deutschland und
in Verbindung mit der EMC ausgerichtet. Die im Fünfjahresrhythmus stattfindende Konferenz blickt auf eine lange
Tradition bedeutender Tagungen zurück: die Pb-Zn wird
seit den 1970er-Jahren von den wichtigen internationalen
Metallurgie-Verbänden in Japan, Kanada und USA organisiert. Seit diesem Jahr zählt somit auch die GDMB für
Deutschland zu diesem Kreis der angesehensten wissenschaftlichen Verbänden und vertritt dort Europa.

requirements of the industry for saving energy and resources. The visitors appreciate the fact that exhibitors in
Düsseldorf present entire machines and systems. As part of
the international conference, the participants of the EMC/
Pb-Zn were also able to take a look at the exhibitions and
be inspired by the 2214 exhibitors.
Another highlight was that, for the first time, the renowned
Pb-Zn conference was held in Germany and together with
the EMC. This conference, which takes place every five
years, has a long tradition of providing important content:
Since the 1970s, the Pb-Zn has been organized by the most
important international metallurgy associations in Japan,
Canada, and the US. As of this year, the GDMB, based in
Germany, also belongs to this circle of the most renowned
scientific associations and represents Europe.
Die Veranstalter freuten sich über insgesamt ca. 500 interessierte Besucher. Kanada, Indien, Dubai, Griechenland,
Japan, China, Mexiko, Norwegen, Belgien und die USA
sind nur einige der 36 Länder, aus denen die Referenten
und Zuhörer anreisten.
Den beiden Chairmen, Dr. Bernd E. Langner für die EMC
und Dr. Ulrich Kerney für Pb-Zn, war es erneut gelungen,
ein hochkarätiges Vortragsprogramm bestehend aus 11
Plenarvorträgen (Abbildung 2) sowie rund 200 Fachvorträgen zusammenzustellen.
Dieses Jahr musste sich der Konferenzbesucher zwischen
sieben parallel laufenden Vortragsreihen entscheiden, was
sich bei dem breiten Spektrum an unterschiedlichen Themengebieten rund um die NE-Metallurgie nicht immer als
einfach darstellte.

Den Auftakt zur Pb-Zn-Konferenz läutete der Short Course „Zink“ bereits am Sonntagvormittag ein (Abbildung 3).

Menge konnte den Zuhörern ein interessantes Vortragsprogramm rund um das Thema Zink präsentiert werden.
The two chairmen, Dr. Bernd E. Langner for the EMC and
Dr. Ulrich Kerney for the Pb-Zn, again managed to create
an outstanding program consisting of 11 plenary lectures
(Figure 2) and approx. 200 expert lectures.
Anschließend wurde die EMC/Pb-Zn am Abend offiziell
mit einem Empfang im Kongresszentrum eröffnet.
This year, the participants had to choose among seven
parallel lecture series, which was not always easy, as the
different non-ferrous metallurgy topics were very diverse.
Auch an den folgenden Abenden sorgte ein vielseitiges
Programm für Abwechslung. Gelegenheit zum Gedanken-

were able to enjoy an interesting lecture program on zinc.
In the evening, the EMC/Pb-Zn was officially opened with
a reception in the conference center.
The evening program for the days to follow was also very
diverse. The get-together on Monday night in the restaurant
“Zum Schiffchen” offered the opportunity to exchange
ideas in the authentic atmosphere of Düsseldorf’s old town.
Tuesday night was the night of the well-established conference banquet. The Radison Blu hotel provided the per246

president of the GDMB, Professor Hans Jacobi, awarded
the Georg Agricola Medallion to Heinz-Peter Schlüter
(Figure 5). The Georg Agricola Medallion has so far
been awarded to 52 personalities for their extraordinary
achievements in the fields of mining and metallurgy; today
it is probably the most important award in the German
mining and metallurgy industry.
Heinz-Peter Schlüter, who learned the wholesale and export trade, born in 1949, started his professional career as
a metal trader at W&O Bergmann. After working in Hamburg, London, and Paris, he assumed the overall responsibility for this branch of the company in 1979, and in 1982 he
became a member of the general management.
In 1985, Schlüter founded TRIMET Metallhandelsgesellschaft as the sole shareholder, which later became TRIMET Aluminium SE. In addition to trading, the company
continuously expanded its business activities. In 2013,
TRIMET purchased two facilities in France, the aluminum
smelter Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and a foundry in Castelsarrasin, followed by another aluminum smelter in Voerde,
Germany in May 2014. In 2009, Schlüter switched from the
board of directors of his company to the supervisory board.
Again, he took over the chairmanship of the board. At the
same time, he is the sole director of the holding company
TRIMET SE.

Am Dienstagabend erwartete die Teilnehmer das etablierte Kongress-Bankett (Abbildung 4). Mit dem Hotel
Radisson Blu war wie gewohnt ein stilvolles Ambiente für
das Bankett ausgewählt worden, bei dem die Georg Agricola-Denkmünze durch den Präsidenten der GDMB,
Professor Hans Jacobi, an Heinz-Peter Schlüter verliehen
wurde (Abbildung 5). Die Georg Agricola-Denkmünze
wurde bisher an 52 Persönlichkeiten für hervorragende Leistungen auf den Gebieten des Bergbaus und des
Metallhüttenwesens verliehen und ist heute die wohl bedeutendste Auszeichnung im deutschen Berg- und Hüttenwesen.
Heinz-Peter Schlüter, gelernter Groß- und Außenhandelskaufmann, Jahrgang 1949, begann seine berufliche Laufbahn als Metallhändler bei W&O Bergmann. Nach Stationen in Hamburg, London und Paris übernahm er 1979 die
Gesamtverantwortung für den Handelsbereich des Unternehmens und wurde 1982 Mitglied der Geschäftsführung.
1985 gründete Schlüter als Alleingesellschafter die TRIMET Metallhandelsgesellschaft, aus der die TRIMET Aluminium SE hervorging. Ausgehend vom Handel weitete
das Unternehmen seine Geschäftstätigkeit kontinuierlich
aus. 2013 erwarb TRIMET mit der Übernahme der Aluminiumhütte in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne und einer Gießerei
in Castelsarrasin zwei Produktionsstandorte in Frankreich
und im Mai 2014 mit der Aluminiumhütte in Voerde ein
weiteres Werk in Deutschland. Schlüter wechselte 2009
vom Vorsitz des Vorstands seines Unternehmens in den
Aufsichtsrat. Auch hier nahm er die Position des Vorsitzenden ein. Zugleich ist er Alleinvorstand der Muttergesellschaft TRIMET SE.
Nicht unerwähnt soll der neu eingeführte „Young Scientist’s Paper Award“ bleiben, der erstmalig verliehen wurde
und den bisher ausgeschriebenen EMC Poster Award ersetzt.
Mit dem „Young Scientist’s Paper Award“ werden herausragende Vorträge von Studierenden oder Jungingenieuren
bzw. -wissenschaftlern ausgezeichnet, die einen konstruktiven fachlichen Beitrag für zukünftige Entwicklungen im
Bereich der Metallurgie liefern. Kandidaten dürfen das
30. Lebensjahr nicht überschritten haben. Die Kriterien,
die als Bewertungsgrundlage des Vortrags für die Auswahl
des Preisträgers dienen, beziehen sich u.a. auf die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung für die Metallurgiebranche und die
Professionalität der Präsentation. Zur Abstimmung berechtigt waren alle Konferenzteilnehmer – die Stimmzettel
waren zusammen mit den Tagungsunterlagen ausgehändigt worden. Der Preis kommt in Form einer vollen Kostenübernahme der Teilnehmergebühren inklusive Abendveranstaltungen für EMC 2017 zur Auszahlung. Darüber
hinaus erhält der Gewinner eine zweijährige kostenfreie
Mitgliedschaft in der GDMB. Diese Art der Preisvergabe
entspricht der konsequenten Umsetzung des GDMB-Slogans „Wir fördern die Ressourcen der Zukunft“, indem

Also worth mentioning is the newly introduced “Young
Scientist’s Paper Award”, which was awarded for the first
time this year and replaces the EMC Poster Award.
The “Young Scientist’s Paper Award” honors students or
junior engineers or scientists for outstanding papers which
contribute to future developments in the field of metallurgy.
The candidates must not be older than 30 years of age. The
selection of the winner of the award is based on the presentation’s scientific importance for the metallurgy industry as
well as its level of professionalism. All participants of the
conference were allowed to cast their vote; the ballot papers
had been included in the conference documentation. The
prize will be the complete assumption of the participation
costs for the EMC 2017, including the fees for the evening
program. In addition, the winner will receive a free two-year
GDMB membership. This kind of award corresponds to the
consistent implementation of the GDMB slogan “We support the future’s resources”, by integrating young academics
into the existing network of experts of our society, and to
help shape the research and industry landscape in the field
of metallurgy. It was fantastic to see that 14 participants
competed for the “Young Scientist’s Paper Award” and that
20 participants presented posters, open for discussion in the
foyer of the conference center.
The winner of the award will be published in the next issue
of World of Metallurgy – ERZMETALL, along with the
lecture and brief introduction of the award winner.
In addition to the lectures, the attendees had the opportunity to participate in one of four post-conference field trips
with the focus on “lead”, “zinc”, “Pb and Cu alloys”, and
“Belgium”. The destinations were renowned companies of
the metallurgical industry in Germany and Belgium.
The lectures held at the EMC and Pb-Zn have been published in two volumes. They can be ordered directly from
the GDMB Verlag GmbH at a price of 300 euros (EMC:

each.

einem Poster vertreten waren, die im Foyer des Kongresszentrums diskutiert werden konnten.
In der nächsten Ausgabe der World of Metallurgy – ERZMETALL wird der Gewinner des Awards bekannt gegeben. In dieser Ausgabe wird auch der Vortrag veröffentlicht und eine Kurzvorstellung des Preisträgers erscheinen.
Zusätzlich zur Vortragsveranstaltung wurde Interessierten die Möglichkeit gegeben, im Anschluss an die Konferenz an vier Nachkongressreisen mit den Schwerpunkten
„Lead“, „Zinc“, „Pb and Cu-Alloys“ und „Belgium“ teilzunehmen. Diese führten zu namhaften Unternehmen der
Metallurgiebranche in Deutschland und Belgien.
Die Vorträge der EMC und der Pb-Zn wurden in jeweils
zwei Bänden veröffentlicht. Zu bestellen sind die Sets
direkt bei der GDMB Verlag GmbH zum Preis von 300
Euro (EMC: ISBN 978-3-940276-63-6 und Pb-Zn: ISBN
978-3-940276-66-7). Einzelne Bände können zum Preis von
