them today.

er «Athen» hört, denkt «Akropolis».
Das ist nicht falsch, doch im Häu­
sermeer rund um das bekannteste
Felsplateau der Welt gibt es mehr zu entdecken
als beeindruckende Überreste griechischer
und römischer Tempel.
Vor 2500 Jahren, mit dem Beginn der Anti­
ke, erfanden die Bürger von Athen die Demo­
kratie und erhoben mit ihren hellenischen
Landsleuten Architektur, Bildhauerei, Sport,
Theater, Politik und Philosophie zur Kunst.
Auch wenn die Wiege der Zivilisation zwi­
schenzeitlich in Ruinen gefallen ist und der­
zeit wieder wirtschaftlich schwere Zeiten
durchmacht – in Sachen Urbanität ist die grie­
chische Hauptstadt nach wie vor ein Vorbild.
Denn das warme Klima und die Kontakt­
freude der Bewohner machen Athen zu einer
Stadt, in der das Leben aus den Wohnungen,
Geschäften und den Tausenden Bars und Res­
taurants auf die Strassen getragen wird – so
schmal diese auch sein mögen! Diese Stadt
flirrt fast rund um die Uhr, denn eine junge
Gründergeneration hat die Krise als Chance
begriffen und sich mit geradezu olympi­
schem Eifer an eine Wiederbelebung anderer
griechischer Errungenschaften gemacht: Sie
heissen Gastfreundschaft, kulinarische Viel­
falt, kräftiger Kaffee und guter Wein!

H
ear the name “Athens” and you’ll probably think of the Acropolis. It’s not
wrong to do so; but the sea of habitation
around the world’s best-known rock plateau offers so much more to discover beyond the admittedly imposing remains of Greek and Roman temples.
This is where, at the dawn of antiquity 2,500
years ago, democracy was invented, and where
the local citizens and their fellow countrymen
raised architecture, sculpture, sport, theatre,
politics and philosophy to dizzying new heights.
And, while the cradle of civilization may have
fallen into ruin occasionally since (and is having its fair share of economic woes in recent
times, too), Greece’s capital is still a model of
urbanity today.
Why? Because the warm climate and the
friendliness of the locals make Athens a place
where life spills out of the homes, shops and
thousands of bars and restaurants and onto the
streets, however narrow they may be. Because
it’s a city that buzzes almost round the clock.
And because a new generation has taken the recent crises as a chance to reaffirm, with almost
Olympian zeal, the great Greek triumphs of the
past: hospitality, culinary variety, strong coffee
and fine wine!

Gleiche Rechte für alle gab
es sogar bei den antiken
­Göttern: Im Erechtheion,
­einem auf der Akropolis 421
bis 406 v. Chr. errichteten
Tempel, wurde gleich drei­
zehn Gottheiten gehuldigt.

die moderne Architektur
mit den ausgegrabenen
antiken Grundmauern
