A Message from the Pastor
Unfortunately many of us see praying as the
last resort which we turn to when everything
else has failed and when medication and
doctor’s treatments have had no effect. And yet
the prayer for healing should not be at the end
of efforts for healing but at the beginning.
It should be a given that our trusting plea for
healing should accompany every medical
treatment just like every prayer for healing
should be accompanied by medical treatment.
The one does not exclude the other.
In order to allow our sick to pray, we shall once
a month (normally on the third Sunday with the
exception of February) offer a prayer for
healing during our worship service. After the
sermon you will be given the opportunity to
come forward to the altar, if possible to kneel
down and to pray for yourself and to be
blessed.
Obviously the prayer for healing is not a
guarantee that all our physical and spiritual
needs will be healed. Even the apostle Paul
had to accept that God did not take his illness
from him. But we have the assurance that God
will uplift the sick, which can also be interpreted
as giving someone new courage, allowing them
to find inner peace, or that his relationship to
God can be healed.
Asking for Healing
„Is everybody here really
sick? “ This was my first
reaction on a Sunday
where nearly everybody I
heard about was sick—
back pains, eye problems,
dizziness,
depression,
stomach issues, pain etc.
This and other things were weighing down on
congregation members. And then there were
others with different problems and worries.
But that is the way it is. Every one of us deals
with something that makes his/her life difficult.
Sickness is not always the smallest of these
maladies.
What do we do when we are physically,
mentally and psychologically sick? We go to
the doctor. But what can we do beyond that?
In Jacob 5:14-15 there is a clear indication of
what we can do.
“Is there anyone who is sick? He should send
for the church elders, who will pray for him and
rub olive oil on him for the name of the Lord.
This prayer made in faith will heal the sick
person.”
I know that many of you faithfully care for the
sick in our congregation. But when was the last
time that we asked a sister or brother to pray
for healing for us?
I invite you to partake in this personal prayer
for healing, to allow others to pray for you and I
would also ask you to pray at home for the

Papadopoulos from Moll Berczy Haus (the
only German speaking retirement home in
the Toronto area) will be speaking to us
about Moll Berczy Haus. Lunch will be
provided.

Ewald
Hammermeister and Esther Walther.
Street Walk Sunday February 12
at 1 p.m.
The Outreach Committee invites you to join
us for a Gateway street walk which is an
excellent opportunity to learn more about
the
complexities
of
poverty
and
homelessness. A street walk is a 3 hour
experience in downtown Toronto which
involves 2 hours of walking through the
downtown core and visiting key sites. We
will explore how mental illness, government
policy, addiction, family, and community
are all involved in contributing to a person's
experience of poverty or not. The street
walk will be lead by a former street survivor
and a Gateway staff.

We are sorry to announce the death of our
long time member Margit Rinck. Our
condolences go to her family.
From Church Council
Thank you to all who contributed to the
Turkey and Boot Drive. It was most
successful! We took in a total of $1,360.00
(a record!) and also had lots of donations
in goods. The Gateway and the Community
Support for Women are most grateful to us.
Outreach is an important aspect of our
message and we are pleased that both
these projects were so well supported.
Delegate
We need a delegate to represent our
congregation together with Pastor Christian
at the Eastern Synod Assembly in
Waterloo from July 5-8.
It is always exciting to meet people of other
congregations. This year the discussion will
probably evolve around the restructuring of
the National Church (ELCIC) as well as the
Eastern Synod. If you are interested please
contact Friedrich Brunzema or Pastor
Christian.
Pastor Christian will be participating in a
clergy retreat February 13-15. Pastor
Meadows-Helmer will fill in if there is an

Pulpit Exchange Sunday, February 19
Pastor Sebastian Meadows-Helmer will be
here at our church while Pastor Christian
holds the sermon at Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Lutheran Church.
By now many of you have picked up the
new photo directories. If you were unable
to come to have a picture taken last
January we ask you for a donation of
$14.00 to cover the cost of a copy of the
directory. Please note this on your offering
envelope. If there are errors or omissions
please let us know in the office.
Please consider joining our Church
Council! We need members to come
forward so that the work of the church is

Annual General Meeting
Please mark your calendar for March 25
as this will be our annual meeting. There
will be a bilingual service followed by the
meeting.
From the Eastern Synod
If all of the confirmed members of every
congregation in our synod gathered some
Sunday morning, we could be quite
comfortably seated in the Rogers Centre,
home of the Toronto Blue Jays. For a
church the size of ours, partnerships are
essential!
Partnerships not only avoid duplication of
effort and save precious budget dollars,
they also extend our ministry capacity. We
become more effective agents of God’s
mission to the world. That is why the
Eastern Synod exists – to allow
congregations to do together what they
would not be able to do on their own.
Effective Mission Partnerships is one of
the four mission priorities of the Eastern
Synod for 2012. We expect to spend
roughly $570,000, or 23% of the annual
budget, on this priority during the year.
Here are some examples of what you do
when you give to the wider church through
benevolence offerings.
Walk in solidarity with the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Guyana. While Guyana
is one of the poorest countries in the
Western hemisphere, we have much to
learn from the evangelical zeal of the
members of our companion synod.
World Day of Prayer
The English World Day of Prayer takes
place at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
on Friday, March 2. The theme is “Let
Justice Prevail” and is written by the
women of Malaysia.

Eine Botschaft vom Pastor
Medikamente und ärztliche Behandlung keine
Wirkung gezeigt haben. Doch das Gebet um
Heilung sollte nicht am Ende stehen, sondern
am Anfang. Unsere vertrauensvolle Bitte um
Heilung sollte jede ärztliche Behandlung wie
selbstverständlich begleiten, so wie jedes
Gebet um Heilung von medizinischer
Behandlung begleitet werden sollte. Eins
schließt das andere nicht aus.
Um diesen wichtigen Dienst des Gebets für
Kranke wahrzunehmen, werden wir am ersten
Sonntag im Februar damit beginnen, einmal im
Monat (außer im Februar an jedem dritten
Sonntag) ein Gebet für Heilung im Gottesdienst
anzubieten. Nach der Predigt wird es die
Möglichkeit geben nach vorne zum Altar zu
kommen, wenn möglich niederzuknien und für
sich beten und sich segnen zu lassen.
Natürlich ist das Gebet um Heilung keine
Garantie dafür, dass alle unsere körperlichen
und seelischen Krankheiten geheilt werden.
Selbst der Apostel Paulus musste akzeptieren,
dass Gott seine Krankheit nicht von ihm nahm.
Aber wir haben die Zusage, dass Gott den
Kranken „aufrichten“ wird, was auch heißen
kann, dass jemand neuen Mut bekommt,
inneren Frieden findet oder dass seine
Gottesbeziehung geheilt wird.
Ich lade Euch ein, von dem persönlichen Gebet
um Heilung Gebrauch zu machen und im
Gottesdienst für euch beten zu lassen und ich
bitte euch, betet auch zuhause für die Kranken.
Um Heilung bitten
“Ist eigentlich jeder
krank?” war meine
Reaktion an einem
Sonntag, als fast
jede(r), von dem ich
hörte, krank war.
Rückenbeschwerden,
Augenprobleme,
Schwindel,
Depression,
Magenprobleme,
Schmerzen und anderes belastete viele
Gemeindeglieder. Und dazu kamen noch
diejenigen, die andere Probleme und Sorgen
hatten.
Aber so ist es: Jeder von uns hat irgendetwas,
das ihm das Leben schwer macht, nicht wahr?
Und Krankheit ist nicht das Kleinste dieser
Übel.
Was machen wir, wenn wir körperlich, seelisch
oder geistig krank sind? Wir gehen zum Arzt
und hoffen darauf, dass wir wieder gesund
werden. Aber was können wir darüber hinaus
tun? In Jakobus 5 bekommen wir einen klaren
Hinweis: „Ist jemand unter euch krank, der rufe
zu sich die Ältesten der Gemeinde, dass sie
über ihm beten und ihn salben mit Öl in dem
Namen des Herrn. Und das Gebet des
Glaubens wird dem Kranken helfen, und der
Herr wird ihn aufrichten.“
Ich weiß, dass viele treu für die Kranken
unserer Gemeinde beten. Doch wann haben
wir zum letzten Mal eine Schwester, oder einen
Bruder darum gebeten, mit uns und für uns um
Heilung zu beten?
Leider sehen viele das Gebet um Heilung als
letzten Strohhalm, den sie ergreifen, wenn
alles andere nicht geholfen hat; wenn

Street Walk

Das Outreach Komitee lädt uns ein, an
einem geführten Street Walk vom
Obdachlosenheim
The
Gateway
teilzunehmen.
Dies
ist
eine
gute
Möglichkeit sich mit Fragen der Armut und
Obdachlosigkeit zu beschäftigen. Wir
werden insgesamt 3 Stunden da sein
wobei wir etwa 2 Stunden lang in der
Innenstadt von Toronto bestimmte Orte
besichtigen und Antworten bekommen, wie
psychische Krankheiten, Regierungspolitik,
Suchtabhängigkeit, Familie und Gemeinde
zur
Obdachlosigkeit
beitragen
bzw.
heraushelfen können. Der Street Walk wird
von einem ehemaligen Obdachlosen und
von Angestellten des Gateway geleitet.
Bitte melden Sie sich bis zum 8. Februar
bei Pastor Christian an, wenn Sie an
diesem Gang teilnehmen möchten.

an der Rüstzeit für Pfarrer teilnehmen.
Pfarrer Sebastian Meadows-Helmer wird
für Notfälle zur Verfügung stehen (905889-0873).
Inzwischen ist unser Fotoverzeichnis
fertig. Für die Personen, die gekommen
sind, um sich fotografieren zu lassen, gibt
es ein Verzeichnis gratis von IPC. Alle
anderen bekommen eine Kopie gegen
Bezahlung der Gebühr, die uns IPC
berechnete, was mit Steuern $14.00 ist.

Kanzelaustausch am 19. Februar
