was consecrated
after just three
months building
time. This is 111
years
of
blessings lived
for now more
than
several
generations
of
believers, who
have gathered
here under the
Word of God.
This is 111 years
of
changing
history:
happiness and
sorrow, baptisms, marriages, and funerals,
German and English worship services (not to
speak of the languages of other worshipers). The
beginnings of the church were not easy (even the
40 plus years before the building of the new
church were difficult) and the future of the
congregation was also often not easy. Times of
prosperity alternated with times of declining
finances. Years when there were many new
members followed years where the congregation
was shrinking. Twice attempts were made to sell
the church and build somewhere else. Twice they
were unable to find a buyer (my very personal
comment: “Thank God!”).
Yet the reconstruction of the church, inspired by
Pastor P. Mueller, faced exactly the same
questions that we also face today. Is it worthwhile
to invest money into a new church (today it is the
roof)? Yet the spirited example of a few, among
others Theodor Heintzman, was infectious and
gave the congregation courage to undertake this

111 Jahre erlebten Segens für nun schon
mehrere Generationen von Gläubigen, die sich
hier unter dem Wort Gottes versammelt haben.
111 Jahre wechselvoller Geschichte: Freude und
Leid; Taufen, Trauungen und Beerdigungen;
deutsche und englische Gottesdienste (von den
Sprachen der Gemeinden, die hier zu Gast
waren ganz zu schweigen). Waren schon die
Anfänge nicht einfach (auch die 40+ Jahre vor
dem Bau der neuen Kirche waren schwierig), war
auch die Zukunft der Gemeinde nicht immer
einfach. Zeiten des Wohlstandes wechselten sich
mit Zeiten rückläufiger Finanzen. Jahre, in denen
viele neue Gemeindeglieder in die Kirche
aufgenommen wurden, folgten auf Jahre, in
denen die Gemeinde schrumpfte. Zweimal wurde
der Versuch unternommen, die Kirche zu
verkaufen und woanders neu zu bauen. Zweimal
fand sich kein Käufer (mein ganz persönlicher
Kommentar: Gott sei Dank!)
Dabei war der Neubau der Kirche, angeregt von
Pfarrer P. Mueller, von den gleichen Fragen
begleitet, die wir heute genauso wieder kennen:
Lohnt es sich, das Geld für eine neue Kirche
(heute ist es das Dach) zu investieren? Doch das
beherzte Vorbild weniger, u.a. Theodor
Heintzman, steckte andere an und machte der
Gemeinde Mut, diesen Schritt hoffnungsvoll zu
wagen und in die Zukunft der Gemeinde zu
investieren. Mit ihrem Mut und ihrem Glauben
haben unsere Vorväter und –mütter auch dafür
gesorgt, dass wir heute 111 Jahre später

Gottesdienst in einer wunderschönen Kirche
feiern können. Einer Kirche, von der viele Gäste
sagen, dass sie zu den schönsten in Toronto
gehört. Immer wieder haben die vergangenen
Generationen von Menschen selbst in schweren
Zeiten Geld, Zeit und Kraft investiert, um die
Kirche in Schuss zu halten und Reparaturen
durchzuführen und damit in die Zukunft der
Kirche zu investieren.
Gott hat diese Gemeinde und Kirche in der
Vergangenheit geführt und geleitet und wird
diese Gemeinde und diese Kirche auch in der
Zukunft gebrauchen, sein Wort zu verbreiten,
Menschen im Glauben und in tatkräftiger Liebe
zu stärken und sich Menschen zu sammeln, die
in der Nachfolge Jesu Christi leben wollen.
Unsere Aufgabe ist es nun, auf das Haupt der
Gemeinde, auf Jesus Christus zu sehen, uns von
ihm mit Mut, Hoffnung und Glauben erfüllen zu
lassen und uns von ihm auf unserem weiteren
Weg leiten zu lassen, so dass noch viele
Generationen nach uns den Segen Gottes
erleben werden.

beautiful sanctuary. This is a church that many
people say is one of the most beautiful churches
in Toronto. Time and again past generations
invested money, time and energy to keep up the
church and do repairs and thus to invest in the
future of the church.
God has led this congregation and church in the
past and will also need this congregation in the
future to spread his word, to strengthen people in
belief and energetic love and to gather people
who wish to live in the discipleship of Jesus
Christ.
It is now our task to look up to the leader of our
congregation, to Jesus Christ, to let ourselves be
filled with courage, hope and belief and to let us
be led by him on future paths so that many
generations after us can experience God’s
blessings.

Am 11. Oktober feiern wir Erntedankfest, um Gott zu danken, dass er
uns so gut versorgt und beschenkt hat. Als Ausdruck dafür bitten wir
Sie dabei mitzuhelfen, die Kirche an diesem Tage zu schmücken und
eine Erntegabe entsprechend vorher in der Kirche abzugeben.
On October 11 we celebrate Thanksgiving and thank God that he has
so abundantly cared for us. As a token of our appreciation we ask you
to help us decorate the church for that day and to bring to the church
some token of our rich harvest.

Mit anderen Menschen den Glauben teilen Schritte auf dem Weg zu einer evangelisierenden Gemeinde
Es gehört zur Genetik der Kirche, dass die Kirche anderen Menschen von Jesus Christus
erzählt, Glauben teilt und zum Glauben einlädt. Auf diese Weise ist die Kirche von einer
kleinen Gruppe Jesu Nachfolgern zu einer weltumspannenden Gemeinschaft geworden.
Auch nach fast 2000 Jahren hat Jesu Auftrag nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren:
„Geht hin und macht zu Jüngern alle Völker: Taufet sie auf den Namen des Vaters und des
Sohnes und des heiligen Geistes und lehret sie halten alles, was ich euch befohlen habe.“
Matthäus 28, 19-20
In den 17 Jahren meines Dienstes als Pfarrer gehörte es zu den
schönsten und bewegendsten Erlebnissen, wenn ein Mensch, für
den man gebetet und mit dem man seinen Glauben geteilt hat,
selber zum Glauben an Jesus Christus kam und ihm sein Leben
anvertraut hat. Leider kommen einem meistens zuerst eher
negative Beispiele in den Sinn, wenn man das Wort
‚Evangelisation’ hört: Straßenprediger mit zweifelhafter Botschaft,
Evangelisten, die das Höllenfeuer herauf beschwören und vor
ewiger Strafe warnen, Kreuzzüge gegen Andersgläubige,
Fernsehprediger …
Doch Evangelisation meint nichts anderes, als Menschen die gute Nachricht weiter zu sagen,
dass wir in Jesus Christus Gottes vergebender und heilender Liebe begegnen.

Evangelisation heißt, geistlich und seelisch dürstende und hungernde Menschen auf die
Quelle hinzuweisen, die allen Durst nach Liebe und allen Hunger nach Leben stillen kann.
Evangelisation ist keine Veranstaltung, die für ein paar Tage, oder Wochen durchgeführt
wird, sondern braucht Menschen, die bereit sind, für andere zu beten, sie mitunter einen
langen Weg zu begleiten und einladend von ihrem Glauben erzählen. Evangelisieren heißt,
Menschen zuzuhören, bereit zu sein, ihre Sorgen und Freuden zu teilen und ihnen von Jesus
Christus zu erzählen – nicht aufdringlich, nicht drängend, aber frei und offen. Es erscheint
uns immer wieder peinlich zu sein, davon zu erzählen, wie man Gott in seinem Leben
erfahren hat. Lassen Sie sich überraschen, wie positiv Menschen darauf reagieren, wenn sie
nicht das Gefühl haben, dass wir ihnen etwas verkaufen wollen.
Um Schritte auf dem Weg zu gehen, eine evangelisierende Gemeinde zu werden, werden die
Gottesdienste am 4. / 18. Oktober unter diesem Thema stehen. Auch die Bibelstunden (siehe
extra Ankündigungen) im Oktober und November sollen uns helfen auf Menschen
zuzugehen.

Sharing our Faith with Others
Steps on the Way to an Evangelizing Congregation
Part of the genetic of the church is that the church tells others about Jesus Christ, that it
shares faith and invites others to believe. This is how the church of a small group of Jesus’
followers became a world wide fellowship. Even after 2000 years Jesus’ message has not
lost anything of its contemporary nature. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them
to observe all that I have commanded you.” Matthew 28: 19-20
In the 17 years of my service as a pastor one of the nicest and
most memorable times has been when a person for whom one
has prayed and with whom one has shared one’s faith, then
comes to faith in Jesus Christ and then dedicates his life to
Jesus Christ. Unfortunately normally it is the negative examples which come to mind when
one thinks of the word “evangelizing”: street preachers with a dubious message, Evangelists
who swear upon the fires of hell and warn about eternal punishment, crusades against people
who believe differently, TV preachers etc.
But evangelization really means nothing else but to tell people about the good news, that we
encounter God’s forgiving and healing love in Jesus Christ. Evangelization means to lead
spiritually thirsty and hungry people to the source, which can assuage all thirst for love and all
hunger for life.
Evangelization is not a conference held for a few days or for a few weeks. Rather it needs
people who are willing to pray for other people, to accompany them on a long journey and to
tell them about their faith in a welcoming manner.
Evangelization means listening to other people, being willing to share their sorrows and joy
and telling them about Jesus Christ. This is done not in a pushy or obtrusive manner but free
and open.
Again and again it seems as if it is embarrassing for us to talk about how we have
encountered God in our own life. Let yourself be surprised by how positively people react
when they do not have the feeling that you are trying to sell them something.
To help us along the way to becoming an evangelizing congregation the services on October
4 and 18 will have this as a theme. The Bible Studies which will commence again in October
and November will also help us in approaching people.

Fall Bible Study Sessions in October and November
In October and November our seasonal Bible Study Lessons will start again.
Topic this year is going to be
“JUST W ALK ACROSS THE ROOM” - SIMPLE STEPS POINTING PEOPLE TO FAITH
This program will equip and inspire you to take simple steps to extend care, compassion and
inclusiveness to people who might need a touch of God’s love today.
Following a four week curriculum this program will help us to re-discover evangelism as part
of our live as a church and as believers.

Topic: The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians
The emphasis of this Bible Study is not to get the right answer presented, but to share
insights as well as questions and to grow in our understanding of the word of the Bible by
learning from each other.
Since some will come directly from work, a light supper will be provided. However it is very
much appreciated if you could share in the cost for the food as well as pre – registration, so
we know for how many we have to prepare food.

First Lutheran’s Outreach to the Broader Community
You will no doubt recall that last year our congregation provided assistance to two agencies
within our neighbourhood, specifically the 416 Community Centre for Women and the
Gateway.
After careful consideration, the Outreach Committee has determined that we should once
again respond to the needs of those who are struggling in our broader community by
supporting the work of those two agencies. A donation envelope will be distributed during
November and December for this purpose.
The funds that are collected will be used to pay for the turkeys that the 416 Community
Centre for Women needs for their Christmas dinner and for some of the useful little
Christmas gifts that go to the women. Part of the funds will go to the purchase of all-weather
boots for men at the Gateway.
Also, beginning in November we will be collecting donations of new socks and underwear
for the men at the Gateway. Boxes will be placed in the basement to receive these
donations,
The 416 Community Centre for Women is a drop in center for women with severe mental
health and addiction issues located at 416 Dundas Street East. To further complicate
matters, a number of these women are homeless and actually live on the streets. Last
summer we collected towels for use at the drop in center where the women come to bathe.
Then in fall we collected clothing, and finally in December we raised money to pay for the
turkeys for their Christmas dinner. Members of the congregation donated generously with
approximately $900 being raised for this purpose. We were told that this made a huge
difference in what the Centre was able to do for its clients at Christmas.
The Gateway is a shelter for homeless men on Jarvis Street operated by the Salvation Army.
In addition to providing food and accommodation, the Gateway attempts to get its clients back
on their feet by providing a great deal of life-skills and spiritual support. Last fall, we
collected good used clothing for them and donations of new socks and underwear. Any
money that came in was used to buy all-weather footwear, an essential for men who spend a
good deal of their time outdoors during the winter.
Although both agencies receive funding from the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto,
they are never-the-less dependent on organizations such as First Lutheran for donations of
various sorts. These donations make a huge difference as they attempt to meet the needs of
their client groups.
Volunteer Opportunities
Both the 416 Community Centre for Women and the Gateway would welcome volunteers
from our congregation. We could assist for example, with the serving of meals, activities
programming, and the like. If you feel that you would like to volunteer, please speak to
Pastor Christian for further information.

A Bishop’s Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Want to meet our national bishop? Want to learn more about the ongoing struggle in Israel and
Palestine? Want to have a great dinner in the company of like-minded Lutherans?
You’ll have an opportunity to hear ELCIC National Bishop Susan Johnson talk about our church’s role
in the Middle East on November 14 of this year. Bishop Johnson will be the speaker at the annual
Bishops’ Company dinner at Dundee Golf and Country Club, 1801 Queen Street North, New Dundee
(on Regional Road 12).

The title of Johnson’s presentation is “A Bishop’s Pilgrimage to the Holy Land”. In January 2009,
more than 40 Lutheran bishops from the U.S. and Canada visited Jordan, Israel and the West Bank.
Using photos from the trip, Bishop Susan will describe her encounters with leaders and ordinary
people on all sides of the issues that divide the region.
A limited number of tickets are available for this event at a cost of $42. This includes a three-course
dinner and Bishop Johnson’s presentation. Tickets must be purchased from Connie Davison at the

Adult Actors Needed!
When was the last time you participated actively in a
Christmas pageant? Is there a character, you always
wanted to play (i.e. Mary or Joseph, the grumpy shepherd,
the angel ...) but never had the chance to?
Now, this year is your chance. This year’s pageant will see
a change. This year the Sunday School children won’t
present the play, but instead we shall have adult actors.
(The Sunday School children will take part of the play in
other ways.)
We first will engage in a discussion about the Christmas Story, before we develop the play and its characters.
This gives every participant the chance to determine the direction and emphasis of the play. Because of the fact
that we wish to minimize the number of rehearsals, everybody should make an effort to attend as often as
possible. The play will be presented December 20th during a combined worship service If you are interested,

Außerordentliche Gemeindeversammlung
am 13. September 2009
Am 13. September wurde eine außerordentliche Gemeindeversammlung einberufen, um über die
Vergabe der Arbeiten am Kirchendach und dem Dach des Gemeindesaales zu informieren und
abzustimmen.
Warum eine erneute Versammlung?
David Berg gab eine genaue Erläuterung, warum die Arbeiten im letzten Jahr nicht begonnen werden
konnten und eine erneute Abstimmung nötig ist.
Die Firma, die den Auftrag für das Flachdach ($16,170) bekommen hatte, meldete sich nicht mehr
zurück und der Vertrag mit Bil-Den ($69,597) war zu ungenau und enthielt (entgegen gegenteiliger
mündlicher Beteuerungen) nicht die Kosten für Gerüste und Sicherheitsmassnahmen.
Da während der weiteren Gespräche das Winterwetter eingesetzt hatte und Weihnachten vor der Tür
stand, entschied der Kirchenrat, den Arbeitsbeginn auf das Frühjahr zu verschieben.
Im April 2009 wurde IRC-Group beauftragt beide Dächer zu untersuchen. Diese Untersuchung hatte
u.a. das Ergebnis, dass schon vier Lagen Bitumen/Schotter auf dem Flachdach aufgebracht wurden
(drei sind erlaubt) und sich Feuchtigkeit zwischen den Lagen befindet. Außerdem entdeckte IRC, dass
die Streben, die dem Flachdach Festigkeit verleihen, korrodiert sind und erneuert werden müssen.
Daher war es notwendig einen Ingenieur mit weiteren strukturellen Untersuchungen zu beauftragen
und Vorschläge zur Reparatur zu unterbreiten.
Im Juni wurde IRC dann beauftragt, detaillierte technische Angaben für den Aufbau der Dächer
anzufertigen und beide Dächer erneut auszuschreiben, um heraus zu finden, ob der Preis von Bil-Den
realistisch ist und ob es preiswertere Alternativen gibt.
Die neuen Kosten
Die Ausschreibung ergab, dass die Kosten für das Kirchendach sich auf $97,889 erhöhen würden,
bzw. auf $47,250 für das Flachdach. Bil-Den war dabei der preiswerteste Anbieter für ein Metalldach.
Ein Asphaltdach würde immer noch $82,635 kosten. Doch da die Gemeinde schon $10,000
Anzahlung auf das Metalldach gemacht hat, die wir nicht zurück bekommen würden, ist der
Unterschied zwischen Metall und Asphalt nur noch gering. Dafür hat ein Metalldach eine weitaus
längere Lebensdauer.
Zusätzliche Kosten ($15,000) verursachen die Gebühren für IRC-Group und Ingenieur, sowie die
notwendigen strukturellen Arbeiten am Flachdach ($25,000).
Woher nehmen wir das Geld für die Dächer?
Um die Gesamtkosten in Höhe von $185,139 aufbringen zu können, müssen wir die Rücklagen der
Gemeinde in Anspruch nehmen: Building Fund $60,593 / Bequests $62,042 / Roof Fund $9,465 /
General Funds 43,039.
Die Abstimmung
Die Gemeindeversammlung hat einheitlich für die Vergabe der Arbeiten an die Firmen Bil-Den und
Roque gestimmt und der Finanzierung zugestimmt.
Wie geht es weiter?
IRC wird die Verträge vorbereiten und darauf drängen, die Arbeiten so bald wie möglich zu beginnen.
Die Arbeiten an beiden Dächern sollten bis Ende November beendet sein.
Diskussionen
Im Blick auf eine so große Investition brach wieder die Frage nach der Zukunft der Gemeinde auf und
ob sich diese Investition lohnt. Pastor Schweter wies auf die wechselhafte Geschichte der Gemeinde
hin, die durch Krisenzeiten hindurch gegangen ist, aber immer wieder Menschen von Gottes Geist
bewegt wurden, finanziell und durch tatkräftige Hilfe die Gemeinde zu unterstützen. Die Zukunft
unserer Gemeinde liegt in Gottes Hand, der ihre Geschicke weiter lenken wird.

Congregational Meeting
on September 13, 2009
On September 13 we held a congregational meeting to discuss the contract for the church roof and
for the roof on the back hall. It was necessary to inform the congregation of the progress and to also
vote on accepting the proposal.
Why did we need to call together the congregation again?
David Berg elaborated on why the work on the roof could not be commenced last year and why a new
vote was necessary.
The company which had been assigned the job of redoing the flatroof (16,170.00) disappeared and we
were unable to contact them and the contract with Bil-Den ($69,170.00) was not detailed enough and
did not include the costs for the scaffolding and the safety measures (contrary to what had been
agreed upon orally).
Since winter set in while we were in further talks and Christmas was nearly upon us, Church Council
decided to postpone the beginning of the work until the spring. In April 2009 IRC Group was assigned
the job of examining both roofs.
This examination revealed that there were already four layers of asphalt and gravel on the flat roof
(only three are allowed) and that there is moisture between the layers. In addition IRC discovered that
the beams which provide stability for the flat roof are corroded and must be renewed.
For this reason it has been necessary to engage an engineer to further look at structural issues and to
make suggestions for the repair.
In June we asked IRC to make a detailed technical report as to how to rebuild the roof, and to invite
tenders for both roofs in order to determine whether Bil-Den’s price was realistic. We also needed to
find out whether there were reasonably priced alternatives.
The New Costs
The invitation for bids resulted in costs for the church roof of $97,889.00 and $47,250.00 for the flat
roof.Bil-Den was still the least expensive bid for the metal roof. An asphalt roof would still cost
$82,635.00. But since the congregation had already paid Bil-Den a deposit of $10,000.00 which we
would probably not get back, the difference between the cost of asphalt and metal was deemed
minimal. A metal roof has a much longer life span than an asphalt roof.
Additional costs of $15,000.00 are incurred for the fees of IRC, the costs of the engineer, as well as
the necessary structural work on the flat roof ($25,000.00).
Where is the money coming from to pay for the roofs?
In order to pay for the $185,139.00 we shall have to dip into our reserves: Building Fund $60,042.00,
Roof Fund $9,465.00 and General Funds $43,039.00.
The Vote
The congregation voted unanomously to give the contract to Bil-Den and Roque and the congregation
has also agreed on the financing method.
How do We Continue?
IRC will prepare the contracts and will push to have the work begin as soon as possible. The work on
both roofs should be finished by late November.
Discussion
Since this is such a huge expense the question of the future of the church and whether this
investment was worthwhile was again raised. Pastor Schweter pointed out the changing history of the
congregation which has gone through crisis times, but that time and again people have been moved
by God’s spirit to contribute financially and physically to the church. The future of the church is in
God’s hands and God will continue to guide us on our ways.
