EN The first human settlement in Alcoi
dates from 40,000 years ago, according
to the traces found in the area known as
El Salt. On some rock shelters near La
Sarga there are some prehistoric cave
paintings, which are declared Heritage of
the Humanity. The Iberian Culture in Alcoi
obliges you to visit the findings of the
settlement in the sanctuary of La Serreta
or el Puig.

EN The present view of this town
derives directly from the times, when
Alcoi was a pioneer of the Industrial
Revolution in Spain. This period of
great social change leaves a legacy
in Alcoi, which constitutes today a
unique artistic heritage included in
the European Route of Modernism.
It is worth mentioning some
outstanding Art Nouveau buildings,
for example, the Casa del Pavo and
the Círculo Industrial, the ancient
building of the Fire Station or the
Municipal Conservatory of Dance
and Music.

Alcoi in April to live and breathe the atmosphere
of the Moors and Christians Festival in honor of
Sant Jordi. Declared to be of International
Tourist Interest since 1980 and considered to be
the birthplace of the Moors and Christian
celebrations taking place each year throughout
the Valencian Community.
If you've decided to watch the entrances of
both the Christians and the Moors, you should
rent seats that are set out along the route. To do
this, contact the Association of Sant Jordi
(965540580). The official Alcoi festival calendar
states that the celebrations take place on April
22, 23 y 24, but it is possible that these dates
may be altered due to Easter week. The dates

EN The Christian procession is a spectacular
explosion of sound and color passing through the
centre of Alcoi which commemorates defense of
the city by the “armies of the cross” against
Saracen attack. The Moorish procession floods
Alcoi with the exotic flavor of the armies of
Mohammed as they march in to take the city.

EN The second day is dedicated to the patron of
the festival, Saint Jordi, the martyr of Cappadocia,
who is represented as a child and is the
indisputable leading character of the celebrations,
loved and admired by all. From early morning until
late into the night, the visitor can enjoy morning
and evening processions, with more opportunity to
see the incredible costumes of the festival’s main
protagonists.

EN The Alardo’s day begins with a verbal battle
between ambassadors from the two sides,
followed by a symbolic representation of the gun
battle that took place in the city, as Alcoi fills with
gunpowder smoke and the peculiar smell of the
arquebus being fired. Finally, as evening falls, in
the battlements of the castle, the child Sant
Jordiet appears astride his white steed.

EN The “Pastoretes” is another Christmas event
specific to Alcoi and it usually takes place on the
Sunday before the 5th January. Boys and girls
dressed as shepherds gather together in the main
square around a nativity scene, in order to give the
baby Jesus presents.

Les « Pastoretes” constitue une autre
particularité de la Noël à Alcoi, et a lieu le dimanche
qui précède le 5 janvier. Les enfants, vêtus de
bergers, se rendent à une Crèche, installée sur la
Place, pour offrir leurs présents au Petit Jésus.

proclamation of Tío Piam, a Royal Ambassador
travels the city’s streets, announcing the
impending arrival of Melchior, Gaspar and
Balthasar. When the children hear this call, they
post their Christmas lists in boxes carried by
donkeys.
DE Am Vorabend des feierlichen Umzugs, nach
dem Tío Piam Eröffungsrede, zieht der Königliche
Botschafter durch die Straßen der Stadt und
kündigt die unmittelbar bevorstehende Ankunft der
Heiligen Drei Könige Melchior, Kasper und
Balthasar an. Die Kinder lauschen aufgeregt den
ankündigenden Worten und hinterlegen ihre
Wunschzettel in einem der Briefkästen, die von
kleinen Eseln auf dem Rücken getragen werden.
FR La veille du défilé, après l’avis du Tío Piam,
l’Ambassadeur des Rois Mages parcourt les rues
de la ville annonçant l’arrivée imminente de
Melchior, Gaspard et Balthazar. Les enfants
écoutent l’annonce et déposent leurs lettres dans
des boites transportées par des ânons.
EN At nightfall on the 5th January, the Three Wise
Men make their impressive entrance into the city
on camels. There are musicians, torchbearers and
shepherds in the parade, as well as pageboys,
who use long ladders to climb onto the balconies
and give presents to the children. The procession
brings much joy and the city and all its inhabitants
are mesmerised by this magical event.
DE Am 5. Januar ziehen die Drei Könige aus dem
Heiligen Morgenland zum Sonnenuntergang
feierlich in die Stadt ein und reiten auf Kamelen
durch die Straßen. Der Umzug wird überdies von
Musikern, Fackelträgern und kleinen Hirten
begleitet sowie einer Reihe von Pagen, welche
über lange Leitern zu den Balkonen der anliegenden Häuser hinaufklettern und den Kindern ihre
Geschenke übergeben. Die Stadt Alcoi für einen
Abend lang in einen wahrhaftigen Zaubermantel
hüllt und sowohl Jung als auch Alt in seinen
magischen Bann zieht.
FR Le 5 janvier, à la tombée de la nuit, les Rois
mages font leur entrée solennelle dans la ville à
dos de chameau, accompagnés de musiciens, de
porteurs de torche, de bergers et de leurs pages.
Ces derniers se hissent aux balcons des maisons
à l’aide de longues échelles et y déposent les
cadeaux pour les enfants. C’est un défilé qui fait
éclater la joie de partout, et qui inonde d’une
ambiance magique tous les recoins de la ville.
