Sie sind Gast in unserer Stadt, die
auf eine 1250-jährige Geschichte
zurückblicken kann. Beeindruckende
Kirchen, stolze Bürgerhäuser, liebliche Gassen, schmucke Plätze und
stille Winkel laden zum Erkunden
und Verweilen ein. Gehen Sie auf
Erkundungstour – es gibt viel zu
entdecken! Mit unserem Parkplatzplan sollten Sie leicht einen Parkplatz in der Innenstadt finden.
Was Sie nicht verpassen sollten:
Basilika St. Veit mit Marktplatz
„Mittelpunkt der Stadt“
Bedeutender spätromanischer
Bau in Schwaben. 1233 geweiht,
1737–1741 barockisiert. Besonders
sehenswert sind am Außenbau die
Ostpartie, im Innern die Krypta,
die Äbte- und Pröpstetafeln im südlichen Querschiff und der im Norden
angegliederte Kreuzgang.
Evangelische Stadtkirche
„Fresken von erster Hand“
Ehemalige Jesuitenkirche, erbaut
1724–1729 nach Plänen von Jakob
Amrhein. Herausragende Fresken mit
Marienthemen und Illusionsmalerei
von Christoph Thomas Scheffler.
Kunstvolles schmiedeeisernes Gitter
im Eingangsbereich.
Palais Adelmann:
„Stolze Fassade“
Wichtigster Profanbau der Stadt,
1688 von den Freiherren und
späteren Grafen von Adelmann erbaut. 1782 Umbau und Erneuerung.
Seit 1991 bürgerliches Kulturhaus
der Stadt. Außenbesichtigung
möglich, im Sommer ehemaliger
Palaisgarten geöffnet.
Barockkirche Schönenberg
„Beliebter Wallfahrtsort“
1682–1695 bzw. 1709–1715 in
heutigen Formen erbaut, Wandpfeilerkirche nach dem Vorarlberger
Schema, bedeutende Innenausstattung mit Stuckaturen von Melchior
Haudt und Melchior Paulus, über
dem Chor große Weihnachtskrippe
(ganzjährig).
Schloss ob Ellwangen „Wo die
Fürstpröpste residierten“
Aus einer mittelalterlichen Burg
entstanden, 1603–1608 zum Vierflügelschloss der Spätrenaissance
umgebaut, 1720–1727 barockisiert.
Das Schloss diente den Ellwanger
Fürstpröpsten als Residenz. Sehenswert: Innenhof, Treppenhaus und
Museum.
Künstlerpfarrer Sieger Köder
„Leuchtende Farben,
schwebende Figuren“
Von Chagall und El Greco inspiriert
hat der Künstlerpfarrer Sieger Köder
in der modernen Hl.-Geist-Kirche
einen achtteiligen, aus Glasfenstern
bestehenden Zyklus geschaffen. Im
Sieger-Köder-Museum Ellwangen
sind 150 Exponate ausgestellt,
die 12 themenbezogenen Stationen
zugeordnet sind. Weitere Kunstwerke
finden sich in den Nachbargemeinden Hohenberg und Rosenberg.

ein vielseitiges
Freizeitangebot
Zahlreiche Natur- und Stauseen rund
um Ellwangen bieten Gelegenheit
zum Baden, aber auch zum Segeln
und Surfen. In reizvoller Landschaft
finden Radfahrer gut markierte,
abwechslungsreiche Radwege, wie
beispielsweise den Kocher-JagstRadweg oder den Ellwanger LimesRad-Rundweg. Wanderer entdecken
auf zahlreichen Wegen Naturschönheiten, romantische Ecken, unberührte Wälder und geschichtsträchtige Pfade.

You‘ve decided to visit Ellwangen,
which has a history dating back over
1250 years. Magnificent churches,
impressive town hou­ses, pretty
lanes, secluded cor­ners and
attractive squares – you‘ll want to
linger for a while and enjoy these
marvellous sights. Go ahead and find
out yourself – the­re‘s so much to
discover. With the help of our map
it should be easy for you to find a
parking space right in the centre of
the town.
What you ought to see:
Ba­silica St. Vitus and Mar­ket
Square: “The Centre of Town”
A late Romanesque building which
is of great importance in Swa­bia.
Conse­crated in 1233, and trans­­for­
med in­to the Ba­roque style bet­ween
1737 and 1741. Es­pe­cially worth
see­ing are the eas­tern fron­tage, the
crypt, the pa­nels of pro­vosts and
ab­bots in the south tran­sept and the
cloi­s­ter, ad­joi­ning the nor­thern
sec­tion of the church.
Protestant Town Church:
“Beautiful Frescoes for you to
Be­hold”
Formerly a Jesuit church, it was
rebuilt between 1724 and 1729 to a
design by Jakob Amrhein. Illusion art
and ma­gnificent fre­scoes por­t­raying
the Virgin Mary by Chri­stoph Thomas
Scheff­ler can be ad­mired. Ar­ti­stic
wrought-iron latticework in the
en­t­ran­ce area.
Palais Adelmann:
“The Distinguished Facade”
The most important secular buil­ding
in the town. Erected by the Baron of
Adelmann in 1688, mo­dified and
re­s­tored in 1782 by the later Count
of Adel­mann. It has been the town‘s
arts centre since 1991. Guided tours
of the building can be arranged, and
in sum­mer the former palace gar­den
is open to the public.
Baroque Church of Schö­nen­berg
“The Popular Pi­lg­ri­ma­ge
­De­s­ti­na­ti­on”
Constructed, 1682–1695, an­d re­bu­ilt, after being badly da­ma­ged by
light­ning, 1709 –1715, when it took
its present form. A pilaster church,
built to the Vo­r­al­berg Ba­ro­que style,
it has an im­pres­sive interior, dis­play­
ing stuc­co work by Mel­chior Haudt
and Mel­chi­or Pau­lus. A mar­vel­l­ous
Christ­mas crib, si­tua­ted abo­ve the
choir, is on per­ma­nent dis­play.
Castle: “The Prince-Provosts‘
Residence”
Originally a medieval fort, it was
con­verted into a four-winged
Re­nais­sance style castle bet­ween
1603 and 1608. A hundred years
la­ter, from 1720 to 1727, it was
­re­mo­delled again in the Ba­ro­que
­sty­le. The castle was once the
re­si­dence of the Ellwangen
prince-provosts. Of s­ pe­cial interest
are – the courty­ard, the staircase
and the mu­se­um.
The Artist-Priest Sieger Kö­der:
“Glowing Colours – Floating
Fi­gu­res”
Inspired by Chagall and El Greco,
the artist-priest Sieger Köder has
pro­du­ced a cycle, consisting of 8
stained glass windows, to be found
in the mo­dern Church of the Holy
Spirit. More of his ar­ti­stic work
can be seen in the neig­h­bou­ring
com­mu­nities of Ho­hen­berg and
Ro­sen­berg.
Enjoy our Countryside –
Lei­su­re ac­ti­vi­ties in and
aroun­d Ell­wan­gen
Go ahead – take a breath of fresh
air! A wonderful dense­ly woo­ded
­coun­t­ry­side, with a wealth of
wal­king trails and cycle routes, is
close to our town. To find out more
about the many rou­tes and trails,
have a look at the leaf­lets “KocherJagst-Radweg” and at “Grüner
Pfad” Leisure time at the Ell­wan­
gen Lakes). If you‘re plan­ning a
longer bike tour, you can easily find
a place to stay over­night in one of
the cam­ping sites in and around
Ell­wan­gen.
Don‘t just spend all your time
ad­mi­ring the scenery! With so
many lakes to choose from you
shouldn‘t have a pro­blem finding a
quiet spot to go swim­ming.
People are quite right to call the
region the Ell­wan­gen Lake District.
