THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH
This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Holy
Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. This is one of
my favorite celebrations of the year! Our God,
the God of the universe, the God who
created the moon, the stars, and the Grand
Canyon, chose to humble himself to take on
human flesh in such a beautiful way; in a way
that we can all relate to; as part of a family. With
the birth of Christ came a new family of three. I
think we focus so much on the divinity of
Christ, that we often forget that here are these
new parents trying to cope with all the things
that new parents struggle with. Mary and Joseph
had to change diapers, get up in the middle of
the night when Jesus was crying, worry about what to feed him and how
much, catch him when he fell as he learned to walk, and be there to comfort
him when he got a “boo boo.” All the sudden this little boy, this true gift
from God, was entrusted to them!
Jesus could have come as a teenager, as a young man, or any other form ever
created (he is God after all), but he chose to come as a baby that had to rely
on his parents for his every need. This is not only an incredible example of
humility, but also shows us as humans how we are called to allow ourselves to
be vulnerable with one another. God calls us all into selfless, loving, trusting ,
holy relationships with our families and friends. This holiday season I pray all
of our families grow in holiness by recognizing the many true gifts from
God that have been entrusted to us.

LITURGICAL BITS & BYTES
Holy Family
These days everyone is thinking about resolutions for this New Year. Here is a
paraphrase of the Prayer of St. Francis that in this parish family we might grow as
the instruments of the Lord's presence as part of our New Year's resolutions.
Lord, make our parish the instrument of your presence.
Help us to depend not on collections and committees, but on a lively faith.
Keep us open to build bridges between people, and not isolate into factions.
Guide us to find words that encourage and affirm rather than criticize or belittle.
Give us the sensitivity to listen to the needs and hurts of others and not to react
with cynicism or selfishness.
For we believe that it is ours to build community where there is isolation,
To proclaim gospel wholeness where there is brokenness,
And to replace the shallow promises made by our world with the promise and the
presence of the Risen Lord.

THE CHALLENGE AND PROMISE OF NONVIOLENCE With the December death of
Nelson Mandela, and the first anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook
elementary school, the world’s thoughts turn once again
to ending violence and promoting peace. Beginning Jan
23, Incarnation joins with St. Charles, St. Francis of
Assisi, and St. Leonard parishes in offering a 12-part
program, The Challenge and Promise of Nonviolence. The
program helps participants deepen their understanding
and practice of peacemaking. Each of the two-hour
sessions will combine prayer and ritual, readings and
discussion, group interaction and immersion activities;
four of the sessions are film nights. The program begins
Thurs, Jan 23, 7-9pm at Incarnation. Cost of the
participant workbook is $20. The first and third sections (each section is composed
of three sessions) will be held on Thursdays. The second and fourth sections will
meet on Monday evenings. The last session is Mon, June 30 at St. Charles. To
register or for more information, call Marilyn Porcino, 433-1188, ext. 201. Change
begins when people of faith come together, gain insight into problems and commit
themselves to take action. Please join us as we work with our neighboring parishes
to lessen violence and make the world more peaceful.

MOMS MORNING ENRICHMENT
Join our MOMS Morning Enrichment group as
we meet and befriend St. Therese of Lisieux,
our most-recently named doctor of the
church. We’ll see St. Therese through the
eyes of author Heather King in the book Shirt
of Flame: A Year with St. Therese of Lisieux.
Barnes and Noble says “[Heather] King, a self
-proclaimed “sober alcoholic” and Catholic
convert, combines witty humor and spiritual
depth in her latest memoir, which recounts
the year she spent reflecting on the life and
writings of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The book
explores Thérèse’s life from childhood to
early death, and relates the experiences and
spirituality of the 19th-century cloistered nun
to King’s own life and spiritual journey in Los
Angeles... Join us as we meet this saint of the
“Little Way” on Tues, January 7, 9-11 am in
Room 105! Books cost $5 and will be sold at
the first meeting. Free childcare is available
by calling 312-9089 or at
[email protected].
MOMS EVENING ENRICHMENT
Ladies, are you curious about the Book of
Revelation, but too busy to participate in a
weekly Bible Study? Join us Wednesday,
January 15, 7-9 pm in the Community Room
when the MOMS Evening Enrichment group
will begin a biweekly journey through the book
of Revelation using Jeff Cavin’s Great
Adventure series. We’d love to have you join
us as we learn more about our faith through
study, fellowship, and fun. Cost of the study
is $25. To register or for more information
contact Kathy Hagerty, 937-434-8342 or
[email protected] or Beth Brough,
