• Palazzo Contarini delle Figure Richard Wagner lived here from 6. to October 30, 1880. (Richard Wagner an Elisa Wille, 30.09.1858) ITINERARIO 2 ITINERARIO 4 San Marco: • Piazza San Marco Cannaregio: • Ca’ Vendramin Calergi (Le Sale di Richard Wagner) • Torre dell’Orologio • Palazzo Ducale • Ponte dei Sospiri • Caffè Lavena • Ca d’Oro Ticket “The Museums of St. Mark’s Square”: a single ticket valid for Palazzo Ducale, Correr Museum, National Archeological Museum and Monumental Rooms of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. Almost every day from five to six in the afternoon, Wagner used to visit Cafè Lavena and stay for half an hour, conversing very often with Carlo Lavena, the owner of the cafè. The term Arsenale is a corruption of the Arab word darsina’a - a house of industry - and for centuries it was the largest in the world with over 16.000 employees at its peak when there were hundreds of galley ships in its basins, ready for war. Still mainly closed to tourism, the Arsenale is sometimes used for notably important exhibitions and trade fairs. • Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Miracoli No visitor to Venice will miss the marvellous Church of “dei Miracoli”, the masterpiece of Pietro Lombardo and one of the greatest Early Renaissance structures in Venice. • Erbaria - Pescheria • Chiesa di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari After the Basilica of St. Mark’s, the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is the most remarkable ecclesiastical complex in Venice, as well as being one of the most important Franciscan foundations in Italy. The main work of art within the church has, of course, to start with what is perhaps the most famous masterpiece of Titian’s early maturity: the powerful altarpiece depicting The Assumption of the Virgin. Painted for its present site between 1516 and 1518, this work represents a key moment in the history of Venetian art. • Gallerie dell’Accademia. Wagner visited several times the Accademia Gallery. Galleries hosted “the Assumption”, the famous altarpiece that Titian had painted in 1516 for the Church of the Frari (where il will return in 1920).
