QUIÉN ES QUIÉN EN LA ISLA / WHO’S WHO IN THE ISLAND? /WER IST WER AUF DER INSEL?
Gibt es hier neben der Beratunge und der
Immatrikulation auch einen Lehrkörper
als Unterstützung am Ort, oder findet alles
auf Distanz statt?
Für die Kurse findet die ganze Ausbildung auf Distanz
statt, aber für das Berufsstudium und die Vorbereitung
auf die Zulassungsprüfung für die Universität bieten
wir Tutorien zur Unterstützung vor allem für die
Studiengänge an, für die die größte Nachfrage besteht.
Welche Studiengänge sind das?
Früher war es Jura, aber inzwischen ist Tourismus
gleichrangig. Ausserdem wird die Nachfrage nach
Sozialpädagik, Unternehmungsführung, Psychologie
und Informatik immer größer.
Denken Sie, dass die Fernuniversität eine
gleichwertige Ausbildung bietet wie die
Präsenz-Universitäten, oder ist ihr
Angebot «reduzierter»?
Nein, im Gegenteil! Ich denke, dass sich die
Menschen, die an der UNED studieren, mehr
anstregen.
Ich vermut e, dass die Studenten eine größere
Verantwortung tragen und ihr durchschnittliches Alter
ist sicherlich höher als üblich.
Ja, es sind normalerweise Erwachsene, die oft ihre
Ausbildung durch Masters oder Kurse der
Berufsausbildung ergänzen. Das durchschnittliche Alter dieser Studenten ist normalerweise 32 und 33
Jahre. Den über 25-Jährigen bietet die
Zulassungsmöglichkeit zur Universität die Chance,
einen Studiengang zu wählen, wozu sie früher aus
verschiedenen Gründen keine Gelegenheit hatten.
Viele schaffen den Kursabschluss nicht, und das liegt
vielleicht daran, dass sie ein Stipendium beantragt
haben, das sie nicht immer bekommen, und manche
geben das Studium auf. Die, die den Kurs bestehen,
können ihren Stipendienantrag erneuern und haben
so nur sehr geringe Ausgaben. Die Mehrheit der
Studenten, die weitermachen, gehören zu denen, die
die mit der Zulassung zur U niver sität beginnen. Obwohl
man später nach Madrid gehen muss, um einen Doktor
zu erwerben, ist sehr wichtig, dies von hier aus machen
zu können.

Wir haben gesehen, dass viele
interessante Kurse stattfinden, deshalb
meinen wir, dass diese vielleicht der
allgemeinen Öffentlichkeit nicht so
bekannt sind, wie sie es sein sollten?
Bestehen Aussichten, die UNED in Fuerteventura zu vergrößern?
Nein das stimmt nicht, wir sind bekannt genug. Es
schreiben sich mehr als fünfhundert Studenten pro
Jahr ein, wobei von Jahr zu Jahr kleine Unterschiede
bestehen. Dies ist im Vergleich zu anderen Orten ein
sehr hoher Durchschnitt.
Schaffen es viele Studenten, einen
Abschluss zu machen?
Ja, im neuen Gebäude des Kongrespalastes wird ein
ganzes Stockwerk für die Fernuniversität zur Verfügung
stehen. Dadurch wird sich vieles verändern, denn die
Installationen w erden es uns ermöglichen, über
Laboratorien zu verfügen und dreijährige
wissenschaftliche Studiengänge einzuführen,
Technisches Ingenieurwesen, Elektronik usw.
Wir hoffen, dass wir Sie noch einmal interviewen
können, wenn die neuen Einrichtungen eröffnet
werden, damit Sie uns über die Fortschritte berichten.

less populated and always got left behind.
Esteban Domínguez Pérez: Director de la Universidad
Nacional de Educación a Distancia - UNED
He studied law in La Laguna in Tenerife and started
as a lawyer in Fuerteventura. For a few years he was
Secretary of this Centre. Then from the 90’s, he got
the opportunity to take the position of director of UNED,
position that he enjoys more than the previous one.
What is your role at the Distance Learning
University?
As director, I take care of all the administrative and
educative responsibilities as well as the coordination
of the social centre. The University is a private
foundation with public interest that was created in
1985 – 86 in conjunction with the Ayuntamientos of
Fuerteventura, the Island’s Cabildo, the autonomous
Government, the Caja de Canarias and the central
Head Office of the UNED.
Bringing a University to Fuerteventura, although a
distance learning one, as been fundamental for the
island’s development and improvement of education.
There is a big difference in the development of the
islands of «Señorío», that used to be administered by
foreign noble conquerors, and the islands of «Realejo»
that used to be administered by the royal family of
Castile that conquered them. The islands of «Realejo»,
Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma, that have more
Apart from advice and admissions, are
there any teachers for direct support or is
everything done long distance?
All the courses are distance learning, but for the
degrees and the preparation for the admission test to
the University, we have support teachers. This is
especially true for the most demanded degrees.
Which are those?
It used to be Law, but Tourism is now as demanded
and we are getting more and more requests for Social
Education, Company Management, Psychology, I.T…
In your point of view, does the Distance
Learning University provide the same level
of education as a traditional University?
that maybe the public is not aware of
what is available...
You would be surprised, we are actually very well
known. We get on average more than five hundred new
registrations every year. It is a very high average
compared to other places.
Is the success rate high?
Many do not reach the end of the course because
they ask for a grant that they may not always get and
sometimes abandon their studies. Those who are
accepted can renew the grant and in this case the cost
is minimum. The best rate of continuity in studies is
with people who start with the access to University.
Although later, in order to have a doctorate, you have
to go to Madrid, it’s very important to be able to do it
fr om here.

I think people who have studied with UNED have
actually worked harder.
Is Fuerteventura’s UNED expected to
grow?
I presume that students need to be more
responsible and are probably more mature...
Yes it is. There will be a complete floor exclusively for
the Distance Learning U niversity in the new Congress
Centre. It will be a major change as we will be able to
have laboratories and include other degrees such as
Science, Electronic Engineering, etc.
That is correct, they tend to be adults who want to
complete their education with a Masters degree or add
courses to their degree. The average age tends to be
be tween 32 and 33 years old. Also, the University gives
a new opportunity to people over 25 years old who had
not studied for various reasons.
