Hans L. Grabowski wurde 1961 in Thüringen geboren und beschäftigt sich bereits seit seiner Kindheit mit historischen
Geldscheinen. Seit 1998 lebt er in Bayern und arbeitet für die Verlage Gietl und Battenberg als Fachautor und Redakteur. Bekannt ist er durch die Veröffentlichung zahlreicher Artikel und Katalogwerke zu deutschen und internationalen
Banknoten, Notgeld und Lagergeld sowie durch Software für Sammler. Er ist Redakteur der Zeitschrift „Münzen &
Sammeln“ und wurde 2004 mit dem Vreneli-Preis der „World Money Fair“ in Basel für außergewöhnliche numismatische Leistungen im Bereich Journalismus & Publizistik geehrt.
Er gilt als einer der profiliertesten Geldscheinexperten Deutschlands.
Hans L. Grabowski was born in Thuringia in 1961 and has pursued an interest in historical banknotes since his childhood. He moved to Bavaria in 1998 and works for the Gietl and Battenberg publishing houses as an author of reference
books and as an editor. He became well-known for the publication of numerous articles and catalogues featuring
German and international banknotes, notgeld and camp money along with collectors’ software. He edits the specialist
magazine “Münzen & Sammeln” (Coins and Collecting) and in 2004, was awarded the Vreneli prize at the World
Money Fair in Basel for special merits in the field of numismatic journalism.
He is regarded as one of the most distinctive banknote experts in Germany.

Josef Gerber wurde 1949 in München geboren und war als selbständiger Spediteur tätig. Schon seit vier Jahrzehnten
sammelt er Banknoten aus aller Welt und ist in Fachkreisen durch Ausstellungen, Vorträge und Fachartikel in numismatischen Zeitschriften bekannt. Seit 2002 ist er vereidigter Gutachter für Weltbanknoten. Seine zahlreichen Reisen rund
um die Welt nutzt er stets auch, um numismatische Kontakte zu knüpfen. So berät er unter anderem verschiedene
Nationalbanken.
Josef Gerber was born in Munich in 1949, working as an independent forwarding agent. Four decades ago he started to
collect banknotes from all over the world and is well-known in collectors’ circles for exhibitions, lectures and articles in
numismatic journals. In 2002 he became a sworn valuer for world banknotes. On his numerous trips around the world
he always takes the opportunity to make numismatic contacts, also advising various national banks.

In 1894, Nicaragua was the first country in the world to issue commemorative banknotes. Decades were to pass in
which famous personalities and historical events were almost only commemorated in coins before with modern world
banknotes – especially since the millennium 2000 commemorative notes experienced a veritable boom worldwide,

Vorwort
Die kulturelle und künstlerische Vielfalt von Banknoten aus aller Welt fasziniert schon seit Jahrzehnten immer mehr Sammler rund um den Globus. So ist das Sammeln von Weltbanknoten – auch Dank der Kataloge von Albert Pick, die heute
weltweite Standard- und Zitierwerke für Händler und Sammler
sind – zu einem der beliebtesten Sammelgebiete in der modernen Numismatik geworden, das besonders durch die Verbreitung des Internet zahlreiche junge Sammler begeistert.
Während bei Münzen schon seit langem auch sog. Gedenkausgaben (Gedenkprägungen) üblich und von zahlreichen
Sammlern bevorzugt gesucht sind, gaben nationale Notenbanken Gedenkbanknoten vermehrt erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten, besonders aber seit der Jahrtausendwende 2000 in
Umlauf. Was damit entstand, ist ein völlig neues Sammelgebiet
von Weltbanknoten, die bisher fast ausschließlich nur nach
Ländern oder Motiven gesammelt wurden, und für das dieser
Katalog einen ersten zusammenfassenden Überblick bietet.
Die ersten Gedenkbanknoten überhaupt waren Billets des Tesoro Nacional von Nikaragua aus dem Jahr 1894, die an den
402. Jahrestag der Wiederentdeckung Amerikas durch Christoph Kolumbus erinnerten und die heute wahre Raritäten sind.
Vielleicht hatte man schlicht und einfach den 400. Jahrestag
verpaßt, und so wollte man wenigstens zwei Jahre später dieses bedeutenden Ereignisses in der Menschheitsgeschichte
gedenken.
Auch aus Mexiko sind frühe Gedenkbanknoten bekannt. Hier
war es 1910 die Banco Minero, die zwei Nominale ihrer regulären Ausgabe mit zusätzlichen Überdrucken versah, um den
100. Jahrestag der Unabhängigkeit Mexikos zu würdigen.
So vielfältig wie das Leben selbst und die Entwicklung der
menschlichen Zivilisation in den verschiedenen Regionen unseres Planeten, so vielfältig sind auch die Anlässe, die zur Ausgabe von Gedenkmünzen und mittlerweile auch von Gedenkbanknoten dienten und dienen. Neben der Würdigung bedeutender Persönlichkeiten aus Politik, Wissenschaft oder Kunst
nimmt die Erinnerung an historische Anlässe, wie etwa zu
Staatsgründungen, Unabhängigkeitserklärungen oder Revolutionen einen beträchtlichen Anteil an den Gedenkausgaben ein.
Daneben sind es aber auch aktuelle Ereignisse, wie Sportveranstaltungen oder Gipfeltreffen, die immer wieder Anlaß zur
Ausgabe von Gedenknoten geben. Manche dieser derart zeitnah gewürdigten Ereignisse schrieben gar Weltgeschichte, wie
der Fall der Berliner Mauer und die Öffnung des Brandenburger
Tors Ende 1989.
So verschieden die Anlässe zur Ausgabe von Gedenkmünzen
oder Gedenkbanknoten auch sein können, so haben sie doch
alle eines gemeinsam. Kein anderes Objekt wechselt so oft den
Besitzer wie Geld und zirkuliert in der gesamten Bevölkerung.
Schon seit der Antike, als es noch keine Massenmedien gab,
wie wir sie heute kennen, war das Bildnis eines Herrschers auf
einer Münze oft der einzige Weg, um ihn bei seinen Untertanen
bekannt zu machen. Der Symbol-Charakter des Geldes und
dessen Breitenwirkung wurde und wird deshalb auch immer
wieder politischen Zwecken untergeordnet – sei es, daß man
in der Vergangenheit wertlos gewordene Geldscheine mit politischen Parolen überdruckte und so zu Propagandazwecken
mißbrauchte, oder daß neben der Gestaltung von Banknoten,
die besonders in totalitären Systemen beredtes Zeugnis der
politischen Verhältnisse sein können, auch Gedenkanlässe gewürdigt werden, die leider ebenfalls politischer Propaganda
dienen.
Wie bei Gedenkmünzen, so spielt bei der Ausgabe von Gedenkbanknoten natürlich auch der finanzielle Aspekt eine wichtige Rolle. Schon lange wird mit dem direkten Verkauf von Gedenkmünzen an Sammler auch Geld verdient und oftmals sind
diese Stücke kaum im Zahlungsverkehr anzutreffen. Auch der
Verkauf von Gedenkbanknoten an Sammler nimmt immer
größere Ausmaße an, und schon gibt es auch zahlreiche Ausgaben in speziell gestalteten Verpackungen, meist den sog.
Foldern, für die Aufpreise verlangt werden. Im Falle von Thailand, das eine Vielzahl von Gedenkbanknoten – meist zur Würdigung des Königs – aufweisen kann, kommen die so erwirtschafteten Gewinne einem königlichen Hilfsfonds zugute, der
z. B. die Entwicklung ländlicher Regionen unterstützt, mit dem
aber auch den Tsunami-Opfern von 2004 geholfen wurde.
Wenn man sich mit Gedenkbanknoten beschäftigt, bleibt es
nicht aus, sich auch mit den Gedenkanlässen zu befassen. Im
Katalog werden deshalb nicht nur die einzelnen Banknoten aufgeführt, mit Vorder- und Rückseite abgebildet und beschrieben – es wird oft auch auf die Gedenkanlässe eingegangen,
was mit historischen Betrachtungen verbunden ist. Diese Erläuterungen sollen Sammlern und Interessierten einen Zugang
zum geschichtlichen Kontext bieten, aus dem heraus es zu Gedenkausgaben kam und kommt.
Die Idee, für das Gebiet der Gedenkbanknoten einen eigenen
Katalog zu erstellen und damit erstmals weltweit diese besonderen Ausgaben für Sammler zu erfassen, zu beschreiben und
zu bewerten, entstand bereits vor einigen Jahren. Damals war
es Josef Gerber, der mich für dieses Vorhaben interessierte und
der mir sofort eine Vielzahl von Gedenkbanknoten als Anregung
präsentierte. Ohne den Sammeleifer und die umfangreiche Unterstützung durch ihn wäre dieses Buch nie entstanden.
Der Katalog führt rund 430 Gedenkbanknoten aus über 100
Ländern auf und bewertet diese in EURO. Nicht aufgenommen
wurden private Ausgaben, wie z. B. die der Chatham Islands.
Autoren und Verlag hoffen, daß sie mit diesem Katalog, der wegen seiner internationalen Thematik zweisprachig verfaßt wurde, zahlreiche Sammler für Banknoten, insbesondere für Gedenkbanknoten, aus aller Welt interessieren können.

Preface
The cultural and artistic diversity of banknotes from all over the
world has fascinated an increasing number of collectors around the globe for decades now. Collecting world banknotes –
partly thanks to the catalogues by Albert Pick, which today, are
standard works and works of reference for dealers and collectors worldwide, has become one of the most popular collector’s fields in modern numismatics and one which has attracted many young collectors, especially as a result of the Internet.
As far as coins are concerned, also so-called commemorative
issues (memorial coins) have been common and much sought
after by numerous collectors for a long time now, whereas national note-issuing banks only started putting commemorative
banknotes into circulation in the past few decades, especially,
however, since the Millennium in 2000. This created a completely new collector’s field, namely world banknotes, which to date have almost only been collected according to countries or
motifs and for which this catalogue provides the first comprehensive overview.
The very first commemorative banknotes were national treasury bills issued by the Tesoro Nacional of Nicaragua in the year
1894, which commemorate the 402nd anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus and which are true
rarities today. Perhaps the 400th anniversary had quite simply
been missed and people wanted to commemorate the event
which had played an important role in the history of humanity,
even if it was two years later.
Early commemorative banknotes are also known from Mexico.
In this case it was the Banco Minero which added overprints
to two denominations of its regular issues in 1910 in order to
honour the centenary of Mexican independence.
The richness and variety of life itself and the evolution of human civilisation in the various regions of our planet are equalled by the widely diverse occasions which served and serve the
issue of memorial coins and, in the meantime, of commemorative banknotes. Besides honouring important figures from politics, science or art, the commemoration of historical events
such as the founding of states, declarations of independence
or revolutions also represent a large proportion of the commemorative issues. Besides these, many contemporary happenings such as sporting events or summit meetings repeatedly provide the occasion to issue commemorative banknotes. Some of these recent occasions which have been commemorated in our times have even written world history, such
as the fall of the Berlin Wall or the opening of the Brandenburg
Gate at the end of 1989.
However diverse the occasions giving rise to the issue of banknotes or coins may be, they all have one thing in common. No
other object changes hands so often as money and circulates
throughout the entire population. Since antiquity, when no

mass media existed as we know it today, the depiction of a ruler on a coin was the only way to make him known to his subjects. The symbolic character of money and its widespread impact often was and still is repeatedly subordinated to political
aims – be it that in the past, banknotes which had become
worthless were overprinted with political slogans and abused
for propaganda purposes or the fact that besides the design of
banknotes which, especially in totalitarian regimes, can bear
eloquent witness to the political circumstances, occasions are
commemorated which unfortunately also serve political propaganda.
As with commemorative coins, the financial aspect naturally also plays an important role in the issue of commemorative banknotes. The direct sale of commemorative coins to collectors
has long been profitable and very often these items are rarely
encountered in actual payment transactions. Similarly, the sale of commemorative banknotes to collectors is assuming evergrowing dimensions and there are already numerous issues in
special packaging, usually so-called folders, for which an extra
charge is levied. In the case of Thailand, which can boast a large number of commemorative banknotes – mostly in honour of
the king – the profits thus generated go into a royal relief fund
which, for example, benefits the development of rural regions
but which also helped support the victims of the Tsunami in
2004.
For those who occupy themselves with commemorative banknotes, an interest in the occasions to be commemorated is inevitable. For this reason, the catalogue does not only list the
individual banknotes, showing and describing the front and
back of them, it also goes into the events to be commemorated, which is often connected with historical observations. These explanations are intended to give collectors and interested
persons access to the historical context which gave or gives
rise to the commemorative issues.
The idea to produce a separate catalogue for commemorative
banknotes and to record these special issues for collectors for
the very first time worldwide was born a few years ago. It was
Josef Gerber who aroused my interest in this project and who
immediately presented me with numerous commemorative
banknotes as inspiration. Without his collector’s zeal and considerable support this book would never have been written.
The catalogue lists around 430 commemorative banknotes
from more than 100 countries, giving the value thereof in Euros.
Private issues such as those of the Chatham Islands have not
been included.
Both authors and publishers alike hope that with this catalogue, which has been produced in two languages due to the international nature of its contents, they will be able to interest
numerous collectors of banknotes, especially commemorative
banknotes, from all over the world.

Geschichte / History
Im Ersten Balkankrieg wurde 1912 die Unabhängigkeit Albaniens proklamiert. 1913 wurde das Land
international anerkannt und ab 1920 war es Mitglied im Völkerbund. 1921 marschierten jugoslawische Truppen in Albanien ein. Der Völkerbund konnte den Konflikt lösen und am 9.11.1921 bestätigte eine Botschafterkonferenz die Grenzen Albaniens. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte Albanien noch
keine eigene Nationalbank.
In the First Balkan War in 1912, the independence of Albania was declared. In 1913, the country
was internationally recognized and in 1920, it became a member of the League of Nations. In 1921,
Yugoslavian troops invaded Albania. The League of Nations was able to resolve the conflict and on
9th November, 1921, an ambassadorial conference confirmed the borders of Albania. At that time,
Albania still did not have its own national bank.

1482 landeten die Portugiesen an der Küste Angolas und gründeten Handelsstationen an der Mündung des Kongo, was zur Kolonisierung führte. Von 1580 bis 1640 gehörte Portugal zu Spanien und 1641 – 1648 kontrollierten die Niederländer Angola. 1648
stellten die Portugiesen ihre Kolonialmacht in Angola wieder her. Angola wurde 1975 unabhängig.
The Portuguese landed on the coast of Angola in 1482. They founded trading stations at the mouth of the River Congo, colonizing the land. From 1580 till 1640, Portugal belonged to Spain and from 1641 till 1648, Angola was under Dutch control. In 1648,
the Portuguese restored their colonial power in Angola. Since 1975, Angola has been an independent state.

Hans-Ludwig Grabowski:
Hans L. Grabowski wurde 1961 in Thüringen geboren und beschäftigt sich bereits seit seiner Kindheit mit historischen
Geldscheinen. Seit 1998 lebt er in Bayern und arbeitet für die Verlage Gietl und Battenberg als Fachautor und Redakteur. Bekannt ist er durch die Veröffentlichung zahlreicher Artikel und Katalogwerke zu deutschen und internationalen
Banknoten, Notgeld und Lagergeld sowie durch Software für Sammler. Er ist Redakteur der Zeitschrift „Münzen &
Sammeln“ und wurde 2004 mit dem Vreneli-Preis der „World Money Fair“ in Basel für außergewöhnliche numismatische Leistungen im Bereich Journalismus & Publizistik geehrt.
Er gilt als einer der profiliertesten Geldscheinexperten Deutschlands.
Hans L. Grabowski was born in Thuringia in 1961 and has pursued an interest in historical banknotes since his childhood. He moved to Bavaria in 1998 and works for the Gietl and Battenberg publishing houses as an author of reference
books and as an editor. He became well-known for the publication of numerous articles and catalogues featuring
German and international banknotes, notgeld and camp money along with collectors’ software. He edits the specialist
magazine “Münzen & Sammeln” (Coins and Collecting) and in 2004, was awarded the Vreneli prize at the World
Money Fair in Basel for special merits in the field of numismatic journalism.
He is regarded as one of the most distinctive banknote experts in Germany.
Josef Gerber:
Josef Gerber wurde 1949 in München geboren und war als selbständiger Spediteur tätig. Schon seit vier Jahrzehnten
sammelt er Banknoten aus aller Welt und ist in Fachkreisen durch Ausstellungen, Vorträge und Fachartikel in numismatischen Zeitschriften bekannt. Seit 2002 ist er vereidigter Gutachter für Weltbanknoten. Seine zahlreichen Reisen rund
um die Welt nutzt er stets auch, um numismatische Kontakte zu knüpfen. So berät er unter anderem verschiedene
Nationalbanken.
Josef Gerber was born in Munich in 1949, working as an independent forwarding agent. Four decades ago he started to
collect banknotes from all over the world and is well-known in collectors’ circles for exhibitions, lectures and articles in
numismatic journals. In 2002 he became a sworn valuer for world banknotes. On his numerous trips around the world
he always takes the opportunity to make numismatic contacts, also advising various national banks.

In 1894, Nicaragua was the first country in the world to issue commemorative banknotes. Decades were to pass in
which famous personalities and historical events were almost only commemorated in coins before with modern world
banknotes – especially since the millennium 2000 commemorative notes experienced a veritable boom worldwide,
