*Lit. ‘strength in the wig’, expression meaning ‘don’t give up’ CAIXA ECONÔMICA FEDERAL A traditional fashion accessory, integral object of religious rituals and symbol of power for kings and authority figures, today the wig has developed new meanings and interpretations — carefully chosen by artists presented in this exhibition. “Força na peruca”*, presented by the CAIXA Cultural, aims to reinforce and stimulate debate whilst spreading new ideas via free access to contemporary artistic productions. As one of the main cultural sponsors in Brazil, CAIXA assigns more than R$ 80 million of its budget to sponsor range cultural initiatives. Amongst the beneficiaries are Brazilian arts and crafts projects, diverse theatre and dance festivals as well as activities within CAIXA Cultural itself. Projects are chosen via public selection in order to ensure that participants are democratically selected, the involvement of producers and artists throughout the country and so that the sponsor company´s investment is applied transparently. Lá, ganhei o calendário Show us your bra, feito pela Breast Form Fund. The idea for the exhibition “Força na peruca” was born in 2012, when I did the Professional Fellows Program, an exchange program in the USA, and visited some empowering projects for women, invited by the Federal Government. In Northampton, Massachusetts, I went to an institution that produced breast prosthesis. In there, I received a copy of the “Show us your bra” calendar, made by the Breast Form Fund. I thought that the project of customized bras by plastic artists was fantastic. Right there my mind clicked, why not doing the same thing with wigs? A força estava Back in Brazil, I started to design the project for the exhibition. It was not as simple as getting some wigs and calling some artists to create their works with them. There was a need for another context, in order to give more space to creation. Little by little, the project “Força na peruca” was raised, aiming to unite art and solidarity, culture and social action, creativity and self-esteem. We invited the artists based on their diverse artistic expressions. Without a clear idea of what this exhibition would be like, they accepted and got on board in this journey. The curious part was that, just by chance, all the chosen artists and members of the team had cases of cancer within either their families or some close friend. Quando a vida lhe deu uma rasteira e lhe apresentou 12 two more and a group. The “strength was in the wig” and the enthusiasm with the project made some artists, like Alfa Siqueira, to create more than one piece. As the project went on, each involved artist brought back a lesson, adding an element. This way we got to the hairdresser Divina Lujan, from the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, who embraced the exhibition and prepared the wigs that show the accessory’s evolution throughout history. The same way was with the Scarpa Family that lent us their rugs and many funny stories about wigs. Jakbell was another partner that joined the project. The company started working with handmade wigs for shows and theatre productions, more than 60 years ago. As time went by, the company changed its profile, incorporating the creation of capillary prostheses, and started a partnership with the Laço Rosa Foundation to produce wigs. Between all these new partners, we are still amazed with the story of the Laço Rosa Foundation that, since 2011, with their online bank of wigs, helps people around the country to regain their selfesteem and find new meanings for their lives. The story of this foundation tells that it all started with a wish of Aline Lopes, one of the most optimistic people I have ever met. With a unique vitality, she was always in a good mood and was very rare to see her muttering. When life knocked her down with a breast cancer during her pregnancy, she studied on the internet and decided to create a foundation to offer more information about this subject to um câncer nos seios durante a gravidez, ela foi para internet estudar e decidiu criar uma fundação para oferecer mais informações sobre o assunto a outros pacientes e seus familiares. The only thing that really struck this young woman was when she started to lose her hair during chemotherapy — after the birth of her son Bento, a bright young boy that today is eight years old. That was exactly what impelled the board of the newborn Foundation Laço Rosa to continue, even after her death, and to create the first on-line wig bank in the country, donating wigs to chemotherapy patients, as a tool to help recuperate their self-esteem. Today, looking at the exhibition “Força na peruca”, I see the importance of this accessory and its role in human history. From Egypt to Hollywood, from Louis XIV to Lady Gaga, wigs marvel and entice both noble and plebeian, resurrecting from time to time, always powerful, even in fragile situations. Because of all of this, we understand that força na peruca is much more than a simple expression, it is a state of mind. There is a certain ironic condescendence—not to say antipathy—related to goodwill art exhibitions, generally associated to charity bazaars promoted by community centers, temples or neighborhood parishes. Few expect to identify in its walls and tables Art objects—with a capital ‘a’—and, if so, certainly they will be hidden under patchwork quilts, ceramic cats, landscape paintings and handmade ashtrays with the innocent message that someone was in some small town and thought of you. A purist theory of Art criticized that bourgeois amateur hybrid universe by defending “the font of aesthetic value in the intrinsic structure of its own technique”1 where its own essentialist character would dominate Modern Art and would keep it in its own “area of competence”2. The conception of an untouched artistic vanguard in the white temples of museums and galleries was opposed to popular art and literature, comics, Hollywood’s cinema, radio music, pulp fiction, and every little thing 1A RGAN, Giulio Carlo. As fair ladies 3G REENBERG, Clement. Vanguarda e kitsch, in CONTRIM, Cecilia & FERREIRA, Glória. In a famous quote, the critic Clement Greenberg classifies those kitsch objects as “vicarious experience and faked sensations” and the “epitome of all that is spurious in the life of our time”3. The division between High and Low Culture, a high price to modernism, makes little sense today, after decades of declassifying Art, where objects and artistic practices have renounced to longevity and noble materials that secure their conceptual stability. What is left of that High Culture seems to be more related to market issues than to an understanding of what Art might be, with or without labels. As the Portuguese novelist Valter Hugo Mãe teaches, the distinction between “the big and the small letters” hides a sinister hierarchy that signal the power of institutions and, specially, the power of States. In the present, we know that the education of the public for the arts is not an exclusive result of the Academies and their salons. The fair ladies from England and the United States—that later spread as far as Australia— helped to establish new concepts about what was or not artistic and created a market for that art, even in the beginning of the XIX 3G REENBERG, Clement. Those charity venues administrated by high society women, particularly influenced American culture, and changed the ways to exhibit, consume and perceive art objects from different times and latitudes. At the same time, the social causes that involved the fairs, bazaars and exhibitions— abolitionism, female vote, hospital maintenance, assistance to wounded and orphans of war, etc.—promoted a more active and politic role for women in the XIX century, and prepared the female transition from the domestic environment to public domain. The fair ladies also favored women as artists, their work was sold easily and was quite appreciated by the consumers. This way, the idea that the homemade and feminine work was less important was protested and with time even the artistic patterns were reconsidered. Artist women found their social field for emancipation in benevolence bazaars and exhibits, where their work gained visibility and critical evaluation. On this exhibition, four women are present with works that show wigs and hair in various contexts, in addition to the work of Divina Lujan, hairdresser at the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro and responsible for the cast characterization in many operas and ballets. Next, in a less objective activity, Gabriela Gusmão draws parallels between Nature and Culture with “Strenght of the leaves”. In this work the fragility of Japanese paper and the brief existence of plants, reveal the poetics of vain things: the sensitive and impermanent of the ukiyo-e, the fluctuating 19 balés. Em seu trabalho, texto e imagem se equivalem e sua tela adquire valor digital, na qual ambos tornam-se 20 world about to dissolve as the Katsushika Hokusai waves or the Hozumi Harunobu’s private life scenes. The artist work with the group Filhos da Mãe refers to another kind of feminine matter. The use of knitting thread generally is related to domestic work whereas “Maria”’s mantle, knitted in copper wire, is associated to an iconography that extends to the Byzantine, with representations of the Virgin that include an external purple veil (maphorion) that many times covers the celestial himation. This kind of collaborative actions show less interest in market value and more in the artistic experience. “Maria” does not even have a definitive shape and its design reveals itself accordingly to the exhibition venue, like an invocation carrier of always transforming divine beauty. Denise Araripe summons Art History in a more ironic and incisive way. Under the apparent layers of references of pop universe that fill her big size canvas, she mixtures—mashup, in contemporary slang—where the original senses collapse in a new critical context. In her work, text and image are equivalent and her canvas acquire a digital value, where both become icons, visual interfaces in a random logic that implodes any attempt of historicity over the same blank slate without a past nor future. Araripe emphasizes that conceptual emptiness with black backgrounds in her canvas, a metaphor for the digital space where everything reduces to the limit of the bit. To accentuate that impact, the oil sticks used in the painting with a dark background create a tridimensional effect if they are seen with 3D glasses. The painting of Denise Araripe is able to dialogue with the cinema and the internet, and at the same time, with the most remote pictorial tradition and, this way, it reaches spectators from different cultural universes, in a work that approximates to the Communication logic. She uses to say that her work is not in her canvas, but in some virtual point between the object and the spectator. For this reason, her “The wig game” is a game between the wig and the big canvas—in truth, four of them, which explains the size of the work—, transforms into an enormous board, in which the spectators-participants follow a sinuous path up to victory. Real world characters and others from literature and comics, such as Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Andy Warhol, or Ernie and his rubber duck from the Muppets or Tarsila de Amaral’s “Abaporu”, “comment” on the game until it finishes with one of the participants dressed up with an Styrofoam head with a wig. Alfa Siqueira is similar to Denise Araripe about the references’ exuberance, but in a completely different way. While the second works emptying contents, Siqueira makes a syncretic sewing of the most diverse cultural elements, in an unlimited and true symbolic universe. “Panacea” is a sculpture of a Greek column incorporated to the head it sustains, thanks to the same patern textile that covers both. With that, the column returns to its anthropomorphic origins and the combination acquires a dimension of totem that, besides being a cult object, offers the possibility of generalization of 21 sincrética dos mais variados elementos culturais, em um universo simbólico ilimitado e verdadeiro. 22 values in a constant actualization. In Culture, nothing is motionless and images and their meanings are ever changing and cumulative just as the context and experiences. Here Boticelli’s and Willendorf’s Venuses are amulets when feminine hair is represented for a bunch of cloths and references that give the head a shamanic meaning, able to perform cures and cross dimensions, since in the fantastic universe of Alma Siqueira, reality is not stable, but porous, permeable to the action of the artist-sorcerer. “Black box”, returns to the birth of Venus myth in times of Islamism, with the Goddess wrapped in her burqa-hair that cannot hide the character and ends up revealing it. Between the multiple meanings of the wig, maybe the most recurrent are associated to joy and beauty. When tracking and selecting film and music videos sections with men and women with wigs—that becomes a skill, a value of qualification and no longer just a complement, like how would it be “with a wig”’—the film director Denise Moraes has created “Wig Star”, a cyclic work that through repeating itself, reiterate the festive character of the adornment. The seizure practice used in her work is secular, since the first experiences of cubism and Dadaism, but here the discontinuity characteristics of the digital universe are highlighted, provoking a wider comprehension about the concept of author and artistic object in contemporary production. Located in the higher and most privileged part of the body, the wig acquired honorary meanings in Ancient Egypt, when it fused with the crown—the khau sejemty, a syncretic symbol of power by itself in Upper and Lower Nile. There are countless references to wigs in the long history of that empire, which mix with other decorations and symbols of power, including the solar disc over the head and the uraeus—the image of the serpent in attack position—that represented the divine authority. Therefore, gods and pharaohs were normally represented wearing them. Sekhmet, goddess of vengeance and the portals between dimensions, has a lioness face and shows her head covered by a long mane that seems like a wig. Osiris, God of the afterlife, also has an elaborated wig. Other divinities have wigs and hair many times painted in blue with laps-lazuli or copper carbonate, the color of solar beings. Anna Bella Geiger chose Akhenaten and his wife, Nefertiti as characters for her piece “About Nile river”. This is not a random choice. This work is a continuation of the research started with the installation “Circa”, presented by the artist in 2006, plenty of reflections about time and memory. Since its rediscovery by the English expeditions in 1890, Akhenaten is called “the first prophet” and “the first individualist” (Hauser), when creates the model of the raising middle-class hero from the M iddle Kingdom that rebelled against the powerful clergy extinguishing the polytheism and force a single 23 o faraó Akhenaten e sua mulher Nefertiti. 24 cult to Aton, the solar disc. In that context, the outbreak of Akhenaton is understood as the breaking with a visual tradition of a repressive society. This kind of analysis is favored by the lacunary documentation that the Ancient History presents which allows a wide diversity of interpretation of Akhenaton. It is that uncertainty that feeds “About Nile river”, as the flow of its waters becomes a metaphor to time passing and their diverse and shapeless aspects. If Egyptian art and history are not sustained with a linear narrative, they are also not maintained by “that tone of certainty that frequently reigns in Art History”, as Didi-Huberman writes, and the chronologies that she implements. In the work of Anna Bella the background maps for the images of Nefertiti and Akhenaten call for considerations about the national representations but also about the body, whose borders, curves and depressions reveal an ultimate territoriality, platted by the artist. In the entire exhibition, the body presence is decisive. For Toz it reveals itself as a force, able to deal with the devastation of illness, the brutality of the treatment and even keep its own gravity and beauty. “The rope” is a continuation of his work, far from graffiti that made him known, which indicates a separation from his comfort zone as well as an increasing interest on experimentalism. This way, Toz prevents himself from stylist mannerism and extend the limits of his work, even if some element of his vocabulary and research remain, including his character Nina and the Joy Salesman. A despeito de diversas experiências que o levaram ao abstrato, a presença humana é marcante em sua obra e da qual o artista Between the street experiences, with its behavior and survival codes that are part of the graffiti world, and the institutionalized universe of art, with new supports and materials presented in galleries and cultural centers, Toz keeps the vitality of a work where playfulness defines the artistic practice itself. Despite the drama of the topic, the colorful balls that linger above adversity, in a poetics where vivid color means happiness. Happiness is also present in the work of Jefferson Svoboda. “Solidarity” is a mixed technique on canvas where the great qualities of the artist are completely revealed: a wide and generous trace, sun-like luminosity and the systematic study of form and color palette that have marked his works for many decades. Human presence is remarkable in his work, something the artist does not seem to be willing to abdicate. The human is his topic and objective, that is in his oldest canvas and in his most recent work. “Solidarity” creates a positivist human net that aims to strengthen the ill. It is a rhizomatic chain, a logic of existence that search to conjure chaos. Against the linearity of thought and action, Svoboda offers transverse and multilateral exits, where heads are not only unities, but also wider dimensions. A vegetable model as the anti-method that was able to offer possibilities to Svoboda is also present in “Speaking with the hair” by Guilherme Secchin, a skilled painter and drawer that developed a multiple and arborescent work. In small formats, his nine designs in black ink are dense and dialogue 25 não parece abdicar, pois é ela que detém a potencialidade do afeto. Contra a linearidade do pensamento e das ações, Svoboda oferece saídas transversais, multilaterais, nas quais as cabeças não são apenas unidades, mas novas dimensões. between them, in a structure that can be understood as multiple or removable series. Hair in all its plastic richness are a topic for the artist with a certain sense of humor and subtle drama, perceived in the tension between some units. There is a similarity between a hair and the drawing technique, with its lines in a confrontation between linear and pictorial, outlines and connections. That elaborated “handcraft,” reveals another pleasure in the artistic practice, in the gesture of drawing (itself) and in the musical possibility of returning to the subject with variations. The piece “Untitled” by Cabelo makes explicit its syncretic and positive character when it puts together a Buddha head sawed on top and transformed into a vase, with dirt, water and “Mother-in-law’s tongue” leaves—Ogun’s votive plant in certain Umbanda traditions. The combination of two religious traditions has a therapeutic character: both offer tranquility and well-being, while the carefree smile of the ceramic Buddha seems to approve the ornament. The set causes a certain surprise, as if we were in front of a koan— Buddhist sentences whose deep sense seem to escape reason and can only be perceived through illumination. This way, the readymade closes up to the oriental concept. When moving daily objects into the sphere of Art, he promotes surprise since they defy our own concepts of Art and beauty. A obra sem título de Cabelo explicita um caráter sincrético e positivo ao reunir uma 26 The conceptual character of an art-piece is also present in the work of Bruno Veiga. Coragem, de Batman Zavareze, encerra a exposição em uma sala adjacente ao salão principal, onde a instalação encontra a into one of the Gorgons by Athena, with the body of a serpent, copper hands, golden wings and the hair transmuted into cobras. It was enough for a man to see only one of her hair-locks to become stone. More than a fantastic creature, “Medusa” is an allegory of spiritual drives. Its myth reduces to a man not being capable of confronting and understanding his own image, and to the mistakes he makes and the guilt that he keeps. The six sub-aquatic photographs of the work repeat the facial variations, an erratic mutational reality that melts into an indiscernible blotch. “Courage” by Batman Zavareze closes the exhibition in a room adjacent to the main hall, where the installation finds the necessary solemnity to deal with a subject as delicate and moving as the artist’s wife treatment, where she poses in two pictures, one with and the other without a wig. In the darkened room with directed light, the images blown up on canvas show her after radio and chemotherapy. It is an impacting work, as the portrait is still nowadays a hallmark of individuality and social representation of the subject. In both pictures, Mirian stares directly at the spectator, without hiding her clinical condition nor surrendering. Head high, opened eyes and a subtle smile, demystify the illness and propose a rational understanding to the human being facing the possibility of death: affection, solidarity, information. Hair and wigs are metonymies. When we say hair, we say body; and when the body speaks, it speaks of life. Arte moderna.
