D'Abbeville livcd for some Lime in the Frcnch establishment located on the
coast of Maranhão, whcre it is now São Luiz, very far to the North of either São
Vicentc (Stadcn, Rio dc Janciro (Thcvct and Lèry) or Northeastern Brazil (Gandavo and Soares dc Souza). His account deals with thc coastal Tupi which he calls
Maragwns (or Meari¿4ois) and who livcd on the islands and around the shores of

uscd to brcw bccr lromcajti fruits, fronr swcct manioc and from swcct manioc mixed
with maize, with thc burial urns and with thc jars dcpicted in lìg. 19.a, b actually
found on Lhc spot in Northcastcrn Brazil.
lWhcn Thcvct says Lhat lhc Tamoyo from Cabo Frio also buried their dead into
a "... grand vasc clc tcrrc..." (Lussagnct, 1953:97) thc vcsscl uscd as a burial urn could
possibly bc of thc sanrc kincl, bccausc thc Tamoyo apparcntly employed the same
fargc jars brcw bccr lrom cajú. Thcrcforc, largc bccr jars wcre sometimes used as
