The history of the construction of the cultural identity of the people of the State of Minas Gerais is long and diversified. It begins thousands of years ago, when the first inhabitants of our State left registered on steep rocks, their passage through our land. These records, which archaeologists call cave paintings, can be observed in the Valley of Peruacu, in the north of the State and, in Pedro Leopoldo, a city located in the central area of the State, on the rocky walls of the pond of Sumidouro state park. Within this context, it is arte. Dentro desse contexto, é Secretária de Estado de Cultura de Minas Gerais possible to say that the history possível afirmar que a história of Minas Gerais may be told de Minas Gerais pode ser by its popular art, which contada por sua arte popular, FOTOS / PHOTOS Gil Leardi - Secom MG also reaches our multiple que também alcança a nossa religiousness, being admired múltipla religiosidade, sendo and used, even today, as an object of devotion. admirada e utilizada, ainda hoje, como objeto de devoção. Desenvolvimento humano, no sentido de estabelecer uma identidade e valorizar o patrimônio material e imaterial do For all these reasons, in Minas Gerais, the incentive to popular art is thought of as a tool for human, social and economic development. Human development, in the sense of establishing an identity and, valuing the material and cultural assets of the State; social development, in promoting inclusion and sustainability; Estado; desenvolvimento social, ao promover a inclusão e a sustentabilidade; e desenvolvimento econômico, ao estimular a geração de emprego e renda e incentivar a formalização do setor cultural. Obras de artistas consagrados como Noemisa, Dona Isabel, Francisco Costa, darão ao público o acesso a este rico acervo da cultura popular mineira. and economic development, in stimulating the generation of jobs and, encouraging the formalization of the cultural sector. The Government of the State of Minas Gerais believes that it is their duty to promote cultural production by creating financing programs, respecting the heterogeneous processes, the diversity of mechanisms, and the models of strategies. The recent inauguration of Centro de Arte Popular CEMIG (CEMIG Popular Art Center,) in March 2012, in Belo Horizonte, capital of the State of Minas Gerais, is an example of the endorsement of these policies. Only with the support of the people, are we able to organize and promote the production of popular art and crafts. A great example to be mentioned is the operation of the center CAPE Maos de Minas (CAPE Hands of Minas), which stimulates the development and strengthening the popular art sector by valuing the artisan. This way, it also contributes to the preservation of the environment and the cultural identity of each region of Minas Gerais. In order to do that, it creates associations and cooperatives, carries out training courses, and also maintains talks with Government, aiming at obtaining improvements for the Brazilian artisans with focus on the marketing of products in Brazil and abroad. Having in view the potential of popular art, the Government of Minas Gerais is developing plans to give visibility to the products and artistic projects of our culture during the world events that will take place in Brazil, namely, the Confederations Cup, in 2013, the Soccer World Cup, in 2014, and the Olympic Games in 2016. On the other hand, the necessity for planning and organization also refers to the internationalization processes, such as the partnership with Macy’s, the largest network of department stores in the USA, which will make a campaign with Brazilian products in, at least, 300 of their 800 stores across the country. Works of famous local artists like Noemisa, Dona Isabel, and Francisco Costa will give to the public access to this rich collection of the popular culture of Minas Gerais. 4 artigo / article The Mineirao stadium is one of the greatest cultural heritages of Minas Gerais under modernization for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Its cultural richness is a result of the combination between the passion of Minas’ people for football and the amazing presentations over the its past 46 years. This giant will host three matches of the 2013 Confederations Cup and six of the 2014 World Cup, four group stage matches, one secondround game, as well as one of the semi-finals. Due to finish on December 21st 2012, the modernization work is running on schedule and according to a Green agenda. For instance, 90% of the waste are been reused: the metal was sent to the steel industry, the soil went to the urbanization redevelopments in Belo Horizonte, and the concrete was used in road surface and pavement. The wood from the original stadium project was donated to handcrafters from the Minas’ Hands association which promotes the development and strengthening of the handcraft sector as well as the cultural identity of the State regions. The handcrafter Melchior da Consolação Silva, from the city of Prados, is one of them. The artist received 7m3 of different types of wood from Mineirao stadium. The amount will count for his next 12 months work. “It’s a great advantage because the wood is certified. Besides, it’s very rewarding to work with such a special material, which comes from one of the biggest football stadiums in the country”, says the artist. artigo / article 5 Para Catharina Machado, diretora geral do Instituto Centro Cape, responsável pela capacitação profissional, comercialização e divulgação do trabalho dos artesãos mineiros no país e no mundo, a entrega aos artesãos da madeira também é um presente ao meio ambiente. 6 artigo / article According to Catharina Machado, director of the Institut Cape Center and person responsible for the professional training, commercialization and marketing of Minas’ handcrafters throughout and country and abroad, the donation of the wood to the artists is also a gift to the environment: “The donation of the material shows a commitment to the environment as the wood is transformed into art”, says her. Minas Gerais has about 60% of Brazil’s cultural heritage, according to the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute. It has one of the largest baroque patrimonies in the world. It can be seen in the 18th century churches on the historical cities circuit composed by the municipalities of Ouro Preto (listed as UNESCO World Heritage), Tiradentes, São João del Rei, Mariana, Diamantina e Sabará. Besides having the historic-cultural tradition, the cities welcome tourists from all around the world who look for natural beauty, notably the waterfalls and rivers, as well as seek to enjoy the great cuisine, whose main symbol is the renowned ‘queijo mineiro’ - cheese from Minas. The cultural agenda of Tiradentes is another circuit’s attraction. With a population of 7.000 inhabitants, the city welcomes up to 30 thousand tourists during the traditional events such the Film, the Jazz, and the Culture and Gastronomy Festivals. “Minas’ historical cities have a vast cultural menu to offer to the tourists. This circuit cultural complex is of world relevance”, says Mariana Bahia, the Head of Public Relations in the State Special Secretariat for the World Cup, the body responsible for the monitoring of the World Cup related works in the State. The State Secretary for the World Cup, Sergio Barroso, reinforces that the tourist will have the chance to taste another Minas specialty: the hospitality. “This is one of our expertises. Minas Gerais is preparing for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with the certainty that it will leave in the visitors’ memory the feeling of a just-discovered treasure”, concludes. artigo / article 7 Entrevista / Interview Apex-Brasil Persistência para exportar Trabalhos sistemáticos de diversas entidades com o apoio da Apex-Brasil transformam realidade do artesanato nacional perante o mercado externo. Confira abaixo a entrevista completa. www.feiranacionaldeartesanato.com.br +55 (31) 3282 8280 - [email protected] Realização: In an interview to the magazine O Brasil Feito à Mão (Brazil handmade,) the president of the Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Export and Investment (Apex-Brazil,) Mauricio Borges, speaks about the importance of the tribute to Brazil offered by Macy’s, and the path taken by entities of handicrafts over the years, to ensure the visibility of national products and to gain the confidence of the external market. Check out the complete interview below. entrevista / interview 9 Qual é a importância de um evento como esse para a imagem do Brasil? What is the importance of such an event for the image of Brazil? Positioning the image of the Brazilian product during Macy’s campaign is important because of the size of the North-American market, the main importer in the world. Last year alone, the United States imported from the world more than U$ 2.2 trillion in goods. As a result of our project, we already have 18 Brazilian companies selling their products directly to the American consumer, with substantial positive results in exports. The actions to raise the awareness of this consumer, certainly, will open up space for new business, not only for these companies, but also for others who join the market of the United States in its export strategy. In addition, we expect other gains, by means of an interaction with thousands of consumers, such as: the consolidation of the image of Brazilian products, and the position of Brazil as provider of goods to the USA, which will certainly result in more business for the Brazilian companies. What actions will be taken so that Brazil does not lose the visibility gained during the campaign promoted by Macy’s in the North American market? 10 entrevista / interview Apex-Brazil will continue to act in the USA through different projects, such as the Project Formula Indy, the Business Center of Apex-Brazil in Miami, and its participation in fairs and other events. In addition, Apex-Brazil has created the brand Be Brazil, which will be presented to the American public in this project with Macy’s and will continue to be used in future trade promotion in the United States. What assessment does Apex-brazil have about the development, over the years, of the exportation of national crafts? The assessment is positive since the sector is in increasing development. Since 2001, Apex-Brazil has been supporting the exports sector by means of sectorial projects carried out in partnership with associations and, we know that although external sales have had a strong growth, it can be much more. In 2011, Apex-Brazil stimulated the creation of a national entity called ABEXA- Associação Brasileira de Exportação de Artesanato (Brazilian Association for Export of Handicrafts,) and signed an agreement within the national framework for the implementation of a new project for the sector, with duration of two years. The goal is to bring together 330 companies aiming at exporting in the order of US$ 6 million in those two years. In 2010, the 163 companies that participated of the sectorial projects of Apex-Brazil exported US$ 3.12 million. What are the main difficulties to insert and promote Brazilian handicraft around the world? Some points are fundamental for the artisan to become competitive in the world market. To export, a company must invest in creative design, and adapt packaging of products and prices for the international market, among other issues. Valeu a pena insistir? What were the actions that brought the most positive results throughout these years? Was it worth to insist on it? There were several actions aimed at promoting the Brazilian handicraft. We can highlight the participation on the main international fairs of the sector like the Maison & Objet , in France, the Environment, in Germany, and the Gift Fair in New York. They are fairs that allow for the dissemination and distribution of products, and give visibility to the segment. How has the international buyer assessed the Brazilian product? Was there any difference over the years? Yes, there were changes. In the beginning, the orders were few because the international buyers were concerned with the quality and delivery time of products. Over the years, with the systematic work of capacitation and awareness of the craftsmen, the international customers have gained confidence in the professionalism of our craftsmen, and now recognize the quality of Brazilian products. After this realization, the number of orders has increased each year. 40 entrevista / interview What long-term plans has Apex-brazil made for the Brazilian handicraft to continue to win international space? Market studies on the sector are being produced by the Unit of Competitive Commercial Intelligence of ApexBrazil in order to detect business opportunities abroad. Additionally, we have the actions of commercial promotion in national and international fairs, and training programs for craftsmen. In Brazil, we can highlight the participation in the National Fair of Crafts, in Belo Horizonte - one of the largest and most important trade fairs in the country - to which we bring potential buyers and opinion-formers from several countries. Abroad, we have foreseen the participation in the largest craft fairs of the world like the Maison & Objet, in France, the Environment in Germany, the Gift Fair in New York, the Bijutex, in Spain and the Intergift, in Las Vegas. entrevista / interview 11 Brasil, um país multifacetado Brazil, a country with several faces Criatividade do artesanato brasileiro conquista o mundo.
