Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 6 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 2: What Impact Does Perceived Justice Have on Complaint Behavior on Social Media Platforms? (AN/MH/MK: 2 Studierende) As more and more customers interact with brands in a social media environment, brand fanpages on Facebook are becoming an increasingly important outlet for customer complaints. Frequently, the reason for a complaint is a perceived injustice, which can lead to customer dissatisfaction, further negative word of mouth and a reduced repurchase intention. Customer complaints can be categorized into three perceived (in)justice categories: procedural, distributive and interactional (in)justice. The goal of this seminar thesis is to analyze an existing data set of customer complaints on Facebook, regarding the different justice categories concerned. Further analysis should reveal, if different justice categories lead to higher publicity (operationalized through “likes” and “comments”) of the complaint and how they affect a company’s brand image. Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 7 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 3: What’s Behind Negative Consumer Posts on Facebook? (AN/MH/MK: 2 Studierende) Brand-fanpages on Facebook form an important communication tool for the marketing practice in today’s interactive online environment. Companies try to engage consumers into an ongoing dialogue to foster the relationship between customers and the respective brand. However, the Facebook platform is also used for customer complaints and negative word-of-mouth messages. To counteract these negative posts, marketers strive to know what exactly makes a negative consumer post critical. For this reason, it is the goal of this seminar thesis to provide insight into the actual topics discussed on fanpages of service related companies. Based on an already existing dataset of negative consumer posts, content analysis shall reveal critical topics that create high publicity (operationalized through “likes” and “comments”). The categories of negative consumer complaints identified within content analysis shall furthermore be analyzed regarding their effect on a company's brand image. Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 8 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 4: Leveraging Sponsorships within Social Media: Benefits for Sponsors and Sponsees (TS: 2 Studierende) The rise of social media over the past few years has provided sponsors and sponsees with an additional tool for leveraging sponsorships. Social media platforms offer fans a direct connection to sponsees, thereby boosting interactions as well as increasing the sponsee’s ability to influence his/her fans. Besides general research on either sponsoring or social media, questions regarding the consequences of a joint activity (sponsoring activities leveraged within social media) remain unexplored. The objective of the Proseminar is to gather, structure and analyze past literature researching sponsoring in the context of social media. From this, a survey design should be developed, which can then be applied within the Hauptseminar. Results from the empirical work should point out potential benefits for both, sponsor and sponsee from leveraging sponsorships within social media. Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 9 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 5: Social Media and Employer Reputation (BP: 2 Studierende) The impact of activities in social media on numerous mindset metrics as well as firm performance indicators has received enormous attention in academic research in recent years. Most studies, however, focus on the consumer. At the same time, companies increasingly try to get in contact not only with current or potential buyers of their products, but also use social media platforms as recruiting instruments. The aim of this seminar paper is to theoretically and empirically investigate the effect of recruiting-driven social media activity on employer reputation. Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 10 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 6: How to Choose a Celebrity Endorser (JB: 1-2 Studierende) Celebrity endorsement is a marketing and communication technique that has become an important tool for marketers over the past few decades. The beneficial and positive effects of endorsements for the endorsed brand have been subject to an extensive amount of research. However, marketing managers have difficulties to choose the right celebrity for their brands. Although, literature suggest a various amount of factors that have to be considered when choosing endorsers, it still remains unclear which of these factors are really important for consumers. An empirical study shall help to shed more light on this research question. Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 11 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 7 Bad-Boy Celebrity Endorser (JB: 1-2 Studierende) Celebrity endorsement is a marketing and communication technique that has become an important tool for marketers over the past few decades. The beneficial and positive effects of endorsements for the endorsed brand have been subject to an extensive amount of research, but negative effects of this technique have remained mainly under-studied. Celebrities are involved in various scandals, and negative publicity associated with the endorser might tarnish the endorser image and the endorsed brand image as well. Despite the generation of some useful insights into the effects of negative celebrity information on endorsed brands, present research prefers celebrities with the generic, flawless image. Research seems to have neglected an important dimension, which might explain the differences in consumer’s reaction to scandals: the perceived image of the endorser by the consumer. Effects in case of a “bad boy” image are almost entirely unknown, displaying a clear gap in research. Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger 13 Institute for Market-based Management Prof. Dr. Manfred Schwaiger Seminarthemen Thema 9: Krisenmanagement: Salami-Taktik oder völlige Offenheit? The Role of the Field of Study for Student Response Patterns in Scientific Research (DC/VR: 2 Studierende) Experimental studies in social science often rely on convenience samples of college students. Many reviewers consider this use of student participants as a questionable or even sometimes critical problem for experimental studies. The pros and cons of using student samples have been widely researched. Some studies even go further to differentiate between response behavior of undergraduate and graduate students. However, less is known about the extent to which the interplay between the field of study of respondents and the subject of the scientific experiment influences the response pattern behavior. In a marketing study, would a sample of business administration students produce other results than e.g. a sample consisting of law students? The aim of the thesis is to replicate a pre-defined study by using as participants students enrolled in different subjects.
