Academic, Personal and Social Excellence
Dear Families,
A Message from the Principal
Orchard Hollow Elementary School
We have completed three of our five days of Ohio Achievement assessments for
third, fourth and fifth graders, and our students have certainly been working hard!
Many thanks to Mrs. Tracy Stanek for overseeing testing snacks for our students, and
also thanks to all of the other students and teachers for their attention to keeping a
quiet testing environment. This can often be difficult in an open-format school such
as Orchard Hollow. Our testing environment has been outstanding and I’m proud of
the awareness and courtesy of all of our students. We will complete that last two
assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
Beginning on Monday, our fifth graders will begin a series of visits to the Catalyst
classroom at Ridge for math with Ms. Vidmar. The Catalyst room at Ridge is a
spacious classroom that has been redesigned with many of the best features
available for blended learning. Features include: I-Pads for each student, mobile
work stations and furniture, comfortable seating options for students, multiple
writing surfaces, a double-touch Smartboard, and much more. This is an exciting
opportunity for learning for Ms. Vidmar and all of her students.
Please consider attending the Mentors Schools’ cyber-safety informational event for
all Mentor Schools’ parents and guardians on April 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the Memorial
Auditorium. Some of our administrators will be joined by officers from the Mentor
Police Department and representatives from Lake County Juvenile Court to talk
about an array of issues that can happen in our digital world and what parents and
guardians should know as we work together to keep children safe.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Vision Statement IV: Provide a safe and secure
environment in which students can grow
academically and socially.
As part of our District Strategic Plan, Mentor Public
Schools seeks to ensure the safety of students and
staff in our buildings. As part of our district safety
plan, every building completes at least one “Lock
Down” drill each year. These unannounced drills, in
addition to the regularly scheduled fire and tornado
drills can be frightening for younger students as they
begin their school experience. Please take a few
moments to talk to your young child about safety and
security at school. The adults in the buildings take
their job of keeping students safe very seriously; as
always, if you have any questions please contact your
school principal.

OLWEUS BULLYING SURVEY – During the weeks of May 12th and May 19th, the Mentor
Public Schools’ 3rd through 12th grade students will be invited to complete a bullying survey at
school. The survey has several purposes: to measure the amount of bullying taking place in our
schools; to compare the data to baseline survey results from 2010; to measure the effect of the
Olweus anti-bullying program in our schools; and to target needed changes and improvements in
preventing bullying behaviors in the schools. If you have any concerns or questions about the
survey, please contact your building principal. Thank you.

OPEN ENROLLMENT MATRIX
Applications for Open Enrollment may be picked up at any of our school offices or at the Mentor Board of
Education and will be accepted from May 1 through May 15, 2014. Interested parents should complete one
application for each student and return it to the Student Services Office at the Mentor Board of Education,
6451 Center Street, during the enrollment period. Parents should only submit applications where a grade
level vacancy is indicated. It is important for parents to understand that making application for IntraDistrict Open Enrollment does not guarantee placement. Transportation to and from the new school

Dear Parents,
We will be using the convenient services of SchoolKidz, Inc. and their Teacher
Tailored® back-to-school supply kit program. Why fight long lines trying to find
every single requested item on your child’s supply list? Let us do the shopping for
you!
SchoolKidz, Inc. offers brand name items, chosen by the teachers and is exactly
what is on your child’s supply list. Names such as Crayola®, Fiskars® and Elmers®,
and their own brand Teacher’sBest™. Best of all, the entire package comes in a
reusable personalized kit.
This program will save you time, making “back-to-school time” less hectic and
more enjoyable for both students and parents. We believe you will find the pricing
to be very reasonable. All kits will be delivered to the school and we will let you
know the exact date for pick up. Order forms will be available soon.
If you have any questions, please contact Renee Kloski at [email protected]
