Eine Auswahl von 300 Objekten aus seiner Sammlung ist ebenfalls in der Ausstellung zu sehen. Alexander Girard (1907–1993) war einer der einflussreichsten Textildesigner und Innenarchitekten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er schuf farbenfrohe und opulente Welten, in denen vom kleinsten Detail bis zum großen Ganzen alles punktgenau und kunstvoll aufeinander abgestimmt war, darunter das Irwin Miller House (1953, Architekt: Eero Saarinen) in Columbus, Indiana und das legendäre Restaurant La Fonda del Sol (1960) in New York. Girard entwarf Möbel, Kleinobjekte und Stoffe, arbeitete für Firmen wie Herman Miller und Braniff International Airways und kooperierte mit Designern wie Charles & Ray Eames und George Nelson. Die große Retrospektive des Gesamtwerks von Girard schöp aus dessen privatem Nachlass und präsentiert neben Möbeln, Textilien und Skulpturen zahlreiche noch nie ausgestellte Skizzen, Zeichnungen und Collagen. Neben eigenen Entwürfen zeigt sie auch das schöpferische Universum, aus dem Girard seine Inspiration zog: Volkskunst aus aller Welt, die Girard Zeit seines Lebens sammelte. Aufgewachsen in Florenz als Sohn einer kosmopolitischen Familie mit europäischen und amerikanischen Wurzeln, studierte Girard Architektur in London und lebte anschließend in New York City, Detroit und Grosse Pointe, Michigan, sowie in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In seiner Schaffenszeit zwischen den 1920er und 1970er Jahren entwarf Girard eindrucksvolle Interieurs für Restaurants, Privat- und Firmenkunden sowie über 300 Textildesigns – die meisten davon für die amerikanische Möbelfirma Herman Miller, zu deren Textildirektor er 1951 ernannt wurde. Einflussreiche Werke schuf Girard jedoch auch in kleinerem Maßstab, etwa jenen Schrizug des Wortes »love«, der bis heute wohl Girards bekanntestes Bildmotiv ist. Eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle für Girard war seine umfangreiche Sammlung von Objekten der Volkskunst, die er auf seinen Reisen durch Mexiko, Indien, Ägypten und andere Länder zusammentrug und die schlussendlich mehr als 100.000 Artefakte umfasste.
