Drei Jahre nach ihrer fulminanten Rückkehr
mit „Transformation“ liefert die Belgische
EBM-Legende Signal Aout 42 einen noch brachialeren Nachfolger in Form von „Vae Victis“
ab, der die dunklen, fesselnden, ritualistischen Elemente des Vorgängers mit einem

wollte es simpler und effektiver angehen, das
haben mich die live Erfahrungen der letzten

Three years after making a fulminant return on the scene
with “Transformation”, Belgian EBM-Legend Signal Aout 42
is back with “Vae Victis”, a smashing album combining the
dark, ritualistic and mesmerizing qualities of its predecessor
with a more club-oriented approach. “I wanted to make it
simpler and more efficient ... this was something that I gathered from my live experiences in the past years. In concert
you can see really well what the audience is expecting and
there are songs that just feel better on stage than others.
Hence, I would say that I created this new album more with
the live performability in mind than with how it works in the
clubs. For me, what is important for an album is to create
a cohesive and very specific environment”, recounts bandmastermind Jacky Meurisse. The album title harks back to
Roman history, as Jacky explains: “It means ‘Misfortune to
the Loser’ (like the song on ‘Transformation’) and is a Latin
expression that was used by the Gaul chieftain Brennus after
conquering Rome. The meaning of this expression is that the
winner is the master who can dictate the terms. I chose the
phrase in connection to the underlying theme of the album:
a tyrant who leads humanity to its doom in his madness. In
the first tracks, the tyrant tries to charm the people and,
as the album progresses, we slowly learn of his dreams of
conquest and power, until, at the end, it all descends into
chaos. I want to draw attention to the fact that no one has
ever succeeded with his dreams of conquest in the long run.
The attempts have always ended in blood and in the end
there were only losers! ‘Vae Victis’ is a bit like an anthem
to human stupidity and cruelty... past, present and future.”
The limited first edition of “Vae Victis” will include the searing bonus
disc “Time Is Coming… Insurrection By Northern Alliance”, which
includes eight club-heavy reworks
of “Time Is Coming” by Atopic, Bak
XIII, Buzz, Darkmen, Granchaos,
Implant, K-Bereit and Void Kampf.

an easy ‘product’ to work with, as it

mehr Spaß als andere. Ich würde sagen, ich
habe das Album eher mit dem live-Gedanken
im Hinterkopf eingespielt, nicht so sehr im
Hinblick auf Club-Tauglichkeit. Am wichtigsten
bei einem Album ist mir, dass es eine stimmige und besondere Atmosphäre hat“, erzählt
Mastermind Jacky Meurisse. Der Albumtitel ist
ein geflügeltes Wort, das sich auf die römische
Antike zurückführen lässt, wie Jacky erklärt:
„Es bedeutet ‚Wehe den Besiegten‘ und wurde
vom gallischen Häuptling Brennus gebraucht,
nachdem er Rom eingenommen hatte. Es
sagt aus, dass der Gewinner der Meister ist,
der die Konditionen bestimmen kann, denn
Brennus warf bei der Bestimmung des zu
leistenden Tributes, nachdem sich die Römer
darüber beschwerten, er würde zu schwere
Gewichte benutzen, auch noch sein Schwert
in die Waagschale, um den Tribut weiter zu
erhöhen. Ich gebrauche das Sprichwort in
Bezug auf das Grundkonzept des Albums: ein
Tyrann, der die Menschheit mit seinem Wahnsinn ins Verderben führt. Zunächst schmeichelt er dem Volk, dann kommen seine Eroberungspläne im Verlaufe des Albums immer
stärker heraus, bis dann alles im Chaos endet.
Ich will klar machen, dass in der Geschichte
der Menschheit bis dato noch niemand über
längere Zeit mit Welteroberungsplänen erfolgreich und glücklich geworden
ist. Die Versuche enden immer in
Blutvergießen und am Ende gab es
nur Verlierer! ‚Vae Victis‘ ist eine
Hymne auf die immerwährende
Dummheit und Grausamkeit der
Menschheit!“ Die limitierte Erstauflage des Albums enthält die Bonus
CD “Time Is Coming… Insurrection
By Northern Alliance”, welche acht
Club-lastige Neubearbeitungen des
Stückes “Time Is Coming” durch
