als 70 Jahren wurde die
DÜRR DENTAL AG
als feinmechanische
Werkstätte in Stuttgart
gegründet. Heute ist Ihr
Unternehmen ein weltweit führender Anbieter in der Dentalindustrie. Wie gelang der Einstieg in den zahnmedizinischen Bereich?
Das Unternehmen wurde 1941 durch die
Brüder Karl und Wilhelm Dürr gegründet.
Durch einen Zufall erfolgte der Einstieg in die
Zahnmedizin. Als die Ehefrau meines Großonkels Wilhelm Dürr 1946 wegen Zahnschmerzen ihren Zahnarzt aufsuchte, war das letzte
Handstück seines Bohrers defekt. Er fragte sie,
ob es für ihren Mann nicht möglich sei, die
Reparatur durchzuführen. Dies ist auch gelungen, meine Großtante konnte abschließend behandelt werden und mein Großonkel Wilhelm
sowie mein Großvater Karl hatten einen neuen
Markt für ihr damaliges Metallbearbeitungsunternehmen entdeckt. Sie starteten mit der
Herstellung von Ersatzteilen für Hand- und
Winkelstücke.
Viele Standards in modernen Zahnarztpraxen
gehen auf Ihre Entwicklungen zurück. Beispiele
dafür sind die ölfreie, dentale Druckluft oder
die hygienische Spraynebelabsaugung. 2013

was founded more than 70 years
ago as a precision engineering workshop in
Stuttgart. Today, your company is one of the
world’s leading suppliers to the dental industry. How did you enter the dental area?
The company was founded in 1941 by the
brothers Karl and Wilhelm Dürr. It entered the
dental industry by chance. When the wife of
my great uncle Wilhelm Dürr visited her dentist with toothache in 1946, the last handpiece
of his drill was faulty. He asked her whether
her husband would be able to repair it. This
he did; my great aunt was then treated and my
great uncle Wilhelm, and my grandfather Karl,
had a new market for their metal-processing
company. They started by producing replacement parts for handpieces and contra-angles.
Many standards in modern dental practice
go back to your developments. Examples include oil-free, dental compressed air, and hygienic spray-mist aspiration. In 2013, DÜRR
DENTAL AG achieved a turnover of over 210
million Euros and is represented by over 1,000
employees in 36 countries. What do you consider to be good personnel management?
Today, DÜRR DENTAL AG employs
about 1,050 people around the world. We
have a relatively stable staing structure with
extremely low levels of luctuation. We can
trace this back to the way we maintain a culture of dialogue and mutual respect, amongst
other things. Even in the days of the two company founders, Karl and Wilhelm Dürr, we already had a culture where we could exchange
opinions and views. The better argument
wins, and employees really value that. It’s not
the hierarchy, but real issues that determine
our direction.
Your aspirator system has made it possible, for
over 50 years, to ergonomically treat reclining
patients. Thanks to your ultrasound instruments used in periodontitis treatment, patients
today can beneit from low-pain periodontal
treatment. What innovative products from
your headquarters in Bietigheim-Bissingen are
currently best sellers?
The products with the highest turnover
at the present are compressors for producing dental air quality for dental treatment,
as well as aspirators and digital-imaging and
x-ray systems. Our hygiene line is also in high
demand. All product lines enable the dentist

Was verstehen Sie unter guter Personalführung?
Die DÜRR DENTAL AG beschäftigt
heute weltweit rund 1050 Mitarbeiter. Wir
haben eine relativ stabile Personalstruktur
mit äußerst geringer Fluktuation. Das führen
wir unter anderem darauf zurück, dass wir
eine Kultur des Dialogs und der gegenseitigen
Wertschätzung plegen. Schon seit den Tagen
der beiden Firmengründer, Karl und Wilhelm
Dürr, besteht eine Kultur des Meinungs- und
Gesinnungsaustauschs. Das bessere Argument
gewinnt, dies wissen die Mitarbeiter sehr zu
schätzen. Nicht die Hierarchie, sondern die Inhalte bestimmen die Richtung.

Ihr Absaugsystem machte es bereits vor über
50 Jahren möglich, den Patienten ergonomisch im Liegen zu behandeln. Dank Ihrer
Ultraschallinstrumente in der Parodontitis-Therapie proitieren Patienten heute von
einer schmerzarmen Parodontalbehandlung.
Welche innovativen Produkte sind aus Ihrem
Headquarter in Bietigheim-Bissingen die aktuellen „Bestseller“?
Die momentan umsatzstärksten Produkte
sind Kompressoren zur Herstellung dentaler
Luftqualität für zahnmedizinische Behandlungen sowie Absaugsysteme und digitale Bildgebungs- und Röntgensysteme. Auch unsere Hygiene-Linie erfreut sich guter Nachfrage. Alle
Produktlinien versetzen den Zahnarzt in die
Lage, eine optimale und zeitgemäße Praxisversorgung sowie Diagnostik zu erstellen – und
dies weltweit.
Seit den Siebzigerjahren produziert die Dürr
Dental Gruppe Kompressoren für Nordamerika unter dem Namen Engineering Dental
Industry. Wenig später wurden die US-Aktivitäten in das ehemalige Joint Venture Air
Techniques in Melville, New York, überführt.
Mittlerweile gibt es auch weitere internationale Standorte. Welchen Stellenwert nimmt das
Auslandsgeschäft ein?
Der weltweite Export umfasst annähernd
80 Prozent unseres Umsatzes, den wir außerhalb von Deutschland erzielen. Wir sind aktuell auf allen Kontinenten und in 36 Ländern
mit eigenen Mitarbeitern vertreten und dies
führt zu internationalen Geschäftsbeziehungen in über 100 Länder der Erde.

Since the 1970s, the Dürr Dental Group has
been producing compressors for North America under the name Engineering Dental Industry. A short time later, the US activities were
transferred to the former Air Techniques joint
venture in Melville, New York. Since then, you
have had further international sites. How important is foreign trade for you?
Global exports make up close to 80 percent of the turnover we achieve outside Germany. We are currently represented on every
continent and in 36 countries by our own
employees, and this means international business relationships in over 100 countries in the
world.
Dentists around the world particularly appreciate the engineering skill of Dürr Dental. You
provide numerous system solutions, particularly in the ields of equipment, diagnostic systems and hygiene. How strong is the competition in these ields?

the digital age. The functional status of connected devices can be monitored centrally via
a PC or tablet, for the highest operational safety and simple maintenance. One further area
is early recognition of caries: here we can ofer
dentists the “VistaCam iX” intra-oral camera
system with radiation-free luorescence and
infra-red technology. It is possible to identify
very early stages of caries, and to stop it using
suitable measures. Using a selection of other
heads on the same system, teeth can be shown
in standard-image mode and also magniied
up to 120 times, which provides very good
support in the communication between dentist and patient. With the “VistaScan” x-ray
imaging plate system, Dürr Dental became the
world leader in dental radiology; the system

Wie ist Ihre Vision für die Zukunft der Dürr
Dental Gruppe?
Die DÜRR DENTAL AG hat ihren
Schwerpunkt in der Medizintechnik. Dies
wird auch in Zukunft so bleiben. Die Menschen werden weltweit stetig älter und wollen
neben einer optimalen medizinischen Versorgung auch immer häuiger kosmetisch bestmöglich versorgt werden. Hier sind wir noch
lange nicht am Ende unserer Möglichkeiten.
Der aktuelle Trend zur Digitalisierung und
Vernetzung der modernen Zahnarztpraxis beziehungsweise Zahnklinik ist erst am Anfang,
hier sehen wir für uns noch Potenzial. Als ein
solides inhabergeführtes Familienunternehmen aus dem Herzen Baden-Württembergs
können wir stärker unser Kapital in Forschung
und Entwicklung investieren als Firmen, die
an der Börse Aktionäre bedienen müssen. Deshalb liegen gute Jahre vor uns.

What is your vision for the future of the Dürr
Dental Group?
The focus of DÜRR DENTAL AG is on
medical technology. It will remain so in the future. People around the world are continuing
to age and, in addition to medical care, more
frequently want the best cosmetic care. We
have not yet exhausted all the possibilities here
for us. The current trend towards digitisation
and networking in the modern dental practice
and/or dental clinic has only just started; we
can still see potential for us. As a solid, owner-managed family company from the heart of
Baden-Württemberg, we can invest more of
our capital in research and development than
companies who have to serve shareholders on
the stock market. That’s why we can see some
good years ahead of us.
