By then he had already had a long and busy career as a fado singer. As early as 1953 he won the inale of the Ecos de Portugal in Lisbon’s fabled concert hall, the Coliseu dos Recreios. He was barely 17 at the time! Then he quickly became known throughout Portugal as a fadista. In 1959 he was chosen the melhor intérprete do fado menor in Café Luso, the Mecca of fado, making him the “best performer” of one of fado’s classic forms, the fado menor. In 1967 he was named Rei do fado, “king of the fado”, which is what he has essentially remained to the present day. But Lisbon’s fado connoisseurs prefer to call him the “emperor” or “pope” of the fado – a perfectly apt term given his age (he’s almost 80!) and the fact that he still performs every evening. António is irmly anchored in Lisbon’s fado scene as an indispensable phenomenon and performer of the local art of the fado. A representative of traditional fado (not to be confused with the more recent modern fados with admixtures of jazz, folk music and/or blues), he has sung in practically every European country and at all the major festivals, though not very frequently. Together with the Huelgas Ensemble, I had the pleasure of hearing him at, for example, Paris’s Cité de la Musique (2007), the Bozar in Brussels, the Netherlands and in Germany. António Rocha remains the most prominent igure in Portugal’s fado culture, a man without peer in Europe as the guardian of Bairro Alto’s irreplaceable and unique regional art. António Rocha has sung fado for more than 60 years, day by day, or rather night by night. For years his artistic headquarters has been O Faia, the storied fado tavern in Bairro Alto. Here he sings his texts for colleagues and aicionados of the fado scene, especially in the wee hours ater the tourists have let. Like the very earliest fadistas, the words he sings are his own. This sets him well apart from other colleagues: he always has his litle notebook at hand, ready to jot down ideas, new metaphors and melancholy texts about lost hope. António thus connects with the 19th-century tradition when fadistas sang their own words. His poems have the typical imagery and metaphors of classical fado (the unrequited love that never existed…), whether the fado mouraria, the fado menor or the fado corrido. He is also the only fadista who can sing the truly old fados that originated in the 19th century. Besides the incredible git of being able to give each verse a tempo all its own, António is a paragon of lexibility and tonal range. He has a masterly command of both, from trinados (trills) and requebros (vibrato) to glissandi. But quite apart from these vocal techniques, it is above all the authenticity of his delivery and his human dignity and naturalness that still move me every evening ater more than 30 years. Ater midnight, António causes the space in O Faia to collapse into an intimate Arcadian scene where his powers of expression cause everything else to fall silent. That’s why this recording, too, was recorded on location, live, with an audience of fado connoisseurs who hang on his every word. It was made on a single evening at an almost other-worldly spot in Europe. For this we wish to thank the management of O Faia, who supported the event without hesitation. I should also point out that singing the saudade (longing and melancholy), the unatainable, every evening, over and over again, is nothing negative or lugubrious. For fadistas and their audience, it’s a necessity that allows them to continue living in hope. It’s also a cast of mind that we in Northern Europe have long forgoten. Paul Van Nevel (Übersetzung: Martina Fischer) SE EU TE ESCREVESSE UM FADO Letra de: Helder Moutinho Música de: Armando Machado IF I WROTE YOU A FADO Lyrics: Helder Moutinho Music: Armando Machado SCHRIEBE ICH DIR EINEN FADO Text: Helder Moutinho Musik: Armando Machado Se eu te escrevesse um fado ao som do vento Para te cantar depois ao som do mar Chamava a esse fado o meu lamento Num barco de silêncio a navegar If I wrote you a fado to the sound of the wind then sang it to the sound of the sea, I’d invite that fado, my lament, into a boat of silence to be sailed away. If I wrote down for you the light from the moon, a streaming ray that the truth makes shine, I’d veil my eyes with a naked shadow and never stop smiling again. I’d let a gently ebbing wave wash over all the sand of sin, looding my life with love, love that I’d only give to that fado. But I won’t write to the sound of the wind or sing to you, to the sound of the sea – that way I won’t turn my lament into the fado of the sin of loving you. FUI DIZER-TE ADEUS AO CAIS Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Alfredo Marceneiro I WENT TO THE DOCK TO SEE YOU OFF Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Alfredo Marceneiro ICH GING ZUM KAI, UM DIR LEBWOHL ZU SAGEN Text: António Rocha Musik: Alfredo Marceneiro Fui dizer-te adeus ao cais Levado p’lo sentimento Que guiava os passos meus Não devo sentir jamais A tristeza do momento Em que dissemos adeus I went to the dock to see you of, drawn by the feeling that was guiding my steps; I never want to feel the sadness of the moment in which we said goodbye. Just a word or two, a gentle touch of hands, and a kiss that I faked. As you sailed away, I felt my heart leave with you too. Já distante os olhos teus Não viam que minha mão Ia acenando a tremer Volta depressa por Deus Levaste o meu coração Sem ti não posso viver Already far away, your eyes couldn’t see how my hand was shaking as I waved. Come back soon, for God’s sake, you’ve taken my heart and I can’t live without you. António Rocha VESTI A MINHA SAUDADE Letra de: António Campos Música de: Francisco Viana I PUT ON MY LONGING Lyrics: António Campos Music: Francisco Viana ICH STREIFTE MEINE SEHNSUCHT ÜBER Text: António Campos Musik: Francisco Viana Vesti a minha saudade Saí com ela para a rua Toda a gente da cidade Viu que a saudade era tua I put on my longing and went out with it on: everyone in the city could see it belonged to you. Die ganze Stadt konnte sehen: Meine Sehnsucht gilt dir allein. fugi da cidade grande fui para o campo estava frio E vi correr o teu nome Por sob as águas do rio I let the big city behind for the countryside, where it was cold, and I watched your name low by beneath the surface of the river. Meu pensamento correu Sem o poder alcançar Depois vi que se perdeu Na imensidade do mar My thoughts chased ater it but couldn’t catch it up, then I saw it disappear into the immensity of the sea. Voltei para casa já tarde Era frio meu coração Despi a minha saudade Vesti-me de solidão I went home very late, my heart was cold, I took of my longing and put on solitude instead. LOUCURAS, NÃO Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Fernando Silva NO MORE MADNESS Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Fernando Silva SCHLUSS MIT DEM UNSINN Text: António Rocha Musik: Fernando Silva Loucuras, não Meu coração Sossega um pouco Essa paixão É uma ilusão Não sejas louco No more madness, calm down, heart of mine, this passion is an illusion, don’t be a fool. Schluss mit dem Unsinn. Mein Herz, komm zur Ruhe. Diese Leidenschat ist nichts als Wahn. Sei kein Narr. Não sonhes mais Porque só vais Sofrer de novo Outra aventura É uma loucura Que eu não aprovo Don’t dream any more, you’ll only get hurt again; it’s crazy to fall in love again, and I can’t allow it. Träume nicht länger. Es brächte dir nur neue Leiden. Ein neues Abenteuer wäre verrückt. Und so darf es nicht sein. Tempo perdido Tenta esquecer Tira o sentido Dessa mulher A vida é breve E o desespero Turva a razão Lost time, try to forget what that woman meant to you, life is short and despair clouds our minds. Escuta o que eu digo Sossega a alma Meu bom amigo Vive com calma Amor proibido Não faz sentido Loucuras, não Listen to what I’m saying, soothe your heart, my dear friend, live in peace; forbidden love makes no sense: no more madness. Hör, was ich dir sage: Bezähme dein Herz, mein treuer Freund, und lebe in Frieden. Verbotene Liebe ist töricht. Schluss mit dem Unsinn. SAUDADE É O AMOR QUE FICA Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Frederico de Brito NOSTALGIA IS THE LOVE THAT LINGERS Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Frederico de Brito SEHNSUCHT IST DIE LIEBE Text: António Rocha Musik: Frederico de Brito Saudade é o amor que ica No coração de quem sente A falta de quem partiu É ela que nos indica Que continua presente Esse amor que nos fugiu Nostalgia is the love that lingers in the heart of one who’s mourning the loss of one who’s gone. It’s what tells us the love we’ve lost is still with us. Saudade é trazer na alma Lembranças de felicidade Das horas a dois vividas Bálsamo que nos acalma Se nos assalta a verdade Que separouy duas vidas Nostalgia is the memories you cherish in your soul of the happy times you spent together, a balm to ease our pain when we’re atacked by the truth that tore two lives apart. I questioned my nostalgia and it was quick to reply – nostalgia doesn’t explain itself but it let me this truth: for those who love madly, nostalgia is the love that lingers. CHEGOU O FIM Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Miguel Ramos THE END HAS COME Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Miguel Ramos ES IST VORBEI Text: António Rocha Musik: Miguel Ramos Não volto mais podes crer Ao cais onde um dia fui Para me despedir de ti Já me cansei de sofrer És dor que já não me dói És passado que esqueci I’m not going back, believe me, to the dock where I once went to wave farewell to you. I’m tired of sufering, it’s a pain that’s stopped hurting, it’s a past that I’ve forgoten. When you went you let a promise with me, telling me you’d return, and you didn’t even notice the love and yearning you’d also let behind. I went to the dock to see you of, then I dreamt of your return and went back there again, but you didn’t come back, and so you drited further and further away from my life. I sufered for you, it’s true, but today my heart is free from despair. I lived so long with my yearning that I came to be fond of it and now I no longer love you. At irst there was that childhood love, innocent as the chatering of swallows, a gentle enchantment that vanishes into a far-distant time that will never come back. Then comes irreverent adolescence, with its friendships, loves and endless passions. We live each moment intensely, our world brimming with dreams. Time passes and youth matures, the dreams we once dreamt begin to fade, in place of each is a nostalgic longing for the magical moments we’ve lived through. When, at last, we stop to look back on all that time has distance from us, we realise that, despite its innocence, we’ll never forget that sweetest, childhood love. ASSIM SEJA Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Jaime Santos SO BE IT Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Jaime Santos SO SOLL ES SEIN Text: António Rocha Musik: Jaime Santos Tu queres assim, assim seja Vive com outro à vontade Não te invejo sê feliz Mas faz com que ele não veja Que ainda sentes saudade Daquele que te não quis That’s what you want, so be it, live with someone else, you’re free to go; I won’t be jealous – be happy. But make sure he doesn’t see that you still miss the man who didn’t love you. Esquece o dia risonho Em que unimos nossas almas Com beijos de felicidade Deixa que ele viva o sonho Que eu vivi nas horas calmas Da nossa leviandade Forget that joyful day when our hearts were united in kisses of happiness. Let him live the dream that I lived in those peaceful times of lighthearted delight. Que ele não saiba o segredo Que ainda faz recordar O que foi nosso passado Porque eu tenho muito medo De ele um dia te deixar E tu voltares para meu lado Don’t let him ind out the secret that still makes you remember the past we shared. For I’m very afraid that one day he’ll leave you and you’ll come back to me. Fernando Silva & Paulo Ramos RESPOSTA FÁCIL Letra de: Domingos Gonçalves Costa Música: Popular AN EASY ANSWER Lyrics: Domingos Gonçalves Costa Music: Trad. EINE EINFACHE ANTWORT Text: Domingos Gonçalves Costa Musik: Trad. You ask me what nostalgia means – I’ll tell you. Nostalgia is all that’s let when everything else is dead. Du fragst mich, was Sehnsucht ist. You who’ve never known pain that eats at your heart, you who know only happiness and haven’t sufered for love, you who’ve never endured the biter pangs of nostalgia, you whose life hasn’t been pierced by a deadly thorn, you ask me what nostalgia means – I’ll tell you. Saudade é um bem ruim Que tortura o coração É o princípio do im Dum sonho sonhado em vão Saudade é doce ilusão De um amor que não nos quer Que a gente teima em esquecer E a própria dor gloriica Saudade é tudo o que ica Depois de tudo morrer Nostalgia is a wickedness that torments your heart; it’s the beginning of the end of a dream dreamed in vain. Nostalgia is the sweet illusion of a love that doesn’t care for us, that people want to forget as they glorify their own pain. Nostalgia is all that’s let when everything else is dead. SÃO SEGREDOS DE AMOR Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Alfredo Marceneiro LOVE’S SECRETS Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Alfredo Marceneiro LIEBESGEHEIMNISSE Text: António Rocha Musik: Alfredo Marceneiro Segredos de amor são jóias – cintilantes Em áureo cofre guardadas – ternamente Feitas de cumplicidades – provocantes Das almas apaixonadas – mutuamente Love’s secrets are jewels – that sparkle Kept in a golden casket – with love Made from complicit agreements – that inlame Between souls in love – with one another Liebesgeheimnisse sind funkelnde Juwelen, liebevoll gehütet in einem goldenen Schrein, geschmiedet aus lammenden Schwüren in Liebe vereinter Seelen. Segredos de amor são ondas – que se agitam Nascidas duma paixão – que se não espera E desmaiam nas areias – ininitas Das praias do coração – uma quimera Love’s secrets are waves – that rise and fall Born from passion – arising from nowhere And breaking upon the sand – the ininite expanse Of the shores of the heart – a chimera Liebesgeheimnisse sind wogende Wellen, aus Leidenschat geboren, die sich aus dem Nichts erheben und über den endlosen Sand ergießen, am Strand der Herzen – ein Hirngespinst. Segredos de amor são ventos – que revoltam A folhagem ressequida – no outono Das vidas que mal vividas – não se encontram Porque votaram o amor – ao abandono Love’s secrets are winds – that shake and stir The dried leaves – in the autumn Of lives that, badly lived – never cross paths Because they chose love – and abandonment Liebesgeheimnisse sind brausende Winde, trockenes Herbstlaub vertaner, sich niemals kreuzender Leben, denn sie wählten Liebe – und Verzicht. Segredos de amor são fogo – que se acende E aos corações dos amantes – dá calor Todo aquele que não ama – não entende Os segredos que alimentam – o amor Love’s secrets are a ire – that lights up And to lovers’ hearts – brings heat Anyone who doesn’t love – doesn’t understand The secrets that nourish – love Liebesgeheimnisse sind lodernde Flammen, die den Herzen Verliebter Wärme spenden. POETAS DO MEU FADO Letra de: António Rocha Música de: Armando Machado POETS OF MY FADO Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Armando Machado IHR DICHTER MEINES FADO Text: António Rocha Musik: Armando Machado Poetas do meu fado amigos meus Irmãos na fé, na dor, nas alegrias Só vós e a solidão alem de Deus Conhecem a verdade dos meus dias Poets of my fado, my friends, my brothers in faith, in pain, in happiness, apart from God, only you and solitude know the truth about my life. Vossas palavras são meu lenitivo Com elas desabafo em horas más Na solidão encontro-me comigo E nesse encontro reencontro a paz Your words are my comfort, when times are hard, they help me pour out my soul. In solitude I ind only myself, and in that encounter I rediscover peace. The peace that abandoned me the day someone came into my life, bringing love but, too fearful, shunning the hand that I held out. E qual pedinte vagabundo errante Buscando aquele amor desencontrado Encontro em Deus o alivio bastante E vivo em vós poetas do meu fado And like a wandering beggar in search of a love found but lost, I ind in God the solace I need, and I live in you, poets of my fado. CARAVELA DA PAIXÃO Letra de: António Rocha Música: Popular ( fado menor ) CARAVEL OF PASSION Lyrics: António Rocha Music: Trad. (fado menor) KARAVELLE DER LEIDENSCHAFT Text: António Rocha Musik: Trad. (fado menor) Guitarra casca-de-noz [?] Caravela da paixão Onde embarca a minha voz Vestida de solidão Guitar, litle boat, caravel of passion in which my voice sets sail, all dressed in solitude, Gitarre, kleine Nussschale, Karavelle der Leidenschat, in der meine Stimme davonzieht, gehüllt in Einsamkeit. E navega o mar do amor Numa procura sem im Daquela paixão maior Que anda fugida de mim And navigates the sea of love in a never-ending search for that deeper passion which keeps escaping me. Dos teus gemidos, guitarra Fiz o meu sonho dourado Com tuas cordas, a amarra Com que me prendi ao fado With your lament, guitar, I made my golden dream, with your strings, the rope that binds me to fado. Só tu pões im á ansiedade Que ás vezes me embarga a voz Guitarra casca-de-noz [?] Caravela da saudade Only you can end the sufering that sometimes stops me singing, guitar, litle boat, caravel of nostalgia. The illusions that lived on in the remains of my childhood dreams were just like grains of sand slipping through my despairing hands. My melancholy thoughts recall things I didn’t want to recall, just as the wind in its fury or its calm soothes or whips up the voice of the sea. If life were a sea of white roses, as my dreams of old once were, there’d be no winding roads for me to walk, in search of something that doesn’t exist. Thus in a happiness that’s not real I go on searching for my being, a grain of sand slipping through the hands of life and falling into the hands of death in order to live.
