HISTORY
Recife, meaning "reef," has a long history as a
French
port city, and its waterways, bridges and reefs

have earned the nickname "the Venice of Brazil".
or
Recife developed in the 17th century as the port
for the rich sugar plantations around Olinda.
With several rivers and offshore reefs, Recife
Recife
Brazil
proved to be a successful port and began to outPeru
grow Olinda. By the 17th century, Recife and
Bolivia
Atlantic Olinda combined were two of the most prosperous cities in Brazil.
Ocean
Up until 1621, the Portuguese were the only ones

an
The Dutch were then expelled and Recife prosUruguay
pered but political power remained with the sugar planters in Olinda, and they refused to share
it. The sugar planters of Olinda and the Portuguese merchants of Recife began a war in 1710, the
Guerra dos Mascates (War of the Mascates). Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo grew their sugar economy
and Recife was eclipsed by these two centers throughout the 19th century.
Today, Recife is one of Brazil's richest places to explore its beautiful beaches and folk art and craft,
including music, dance, sculpture, and painting.

A. RECIFE ANTIGO
Recife Antigo (Ancient Recife) was the administrative center of the region, in colonial and imperial times. In the 20th
century, the area became corrupt and during the 1990s, the
government developed a program to refurbish the Recife
Antigo by restoring buildings opening new businesses. Today
it is one of the city’s hot spots.
B. BOA VIAGEM
The Boa Viagem beach is probably the most popular urban
beach in Brazil. Boa Viagem is best known for its warm water,
fine sand, and modern buildings.
C. FORTE DAS CINCO PONTAS
Although Forte das Cinco Pontas means "Fort of Five Points",
it only has four. It was originally built with five points in 1630
by the Dutch, but the Portuguese later transformed it into
their traditional four-pointed style. The city museum takes
up two wings of the fort and has two rooms devoted to the
Dutch period, including maps and drawings of the early colonial times.
