BRAKE'S CAMPAIGN TO BAN CAR HANDS-FREE PHONES
A major road-safety campaign is under way in Britain to get hands-free mobile phones banned. The charity Brake is
also calling for motorists to switch off their phones while driving. The group said the fines for calling or texting while
behind the wheel should also be increased by up to tenfold, to around $1,600. This is to provide a greater restriction
than the current penalty of $160. Brake's suggestions follow a revelation that more than 575,000 British drivers had
points on their driving licence for using their phone. A spokeswoman for Brake said: "We're living in an age when
being constantly connected is the norm. More and more of us have smart phones, and find it hard to switch off, even
for a minute."
Britain's Department for Transport said that although road safety was a "top priority", it had "no plans to change the
law around the use of hands-free devices". It added that all penalties were being "kept under review to ensure they
are appropriate". Brake said: "While there are enormous benefits to this new technology, it's also posing dangerous
temptations to drivers to divert their concentration away from the critical task at hand, often putting our most
vulnerable road users in danger." It added: "Many people who wouldn't dream of drink-driving are succumbing to
using their phone and other distractions while driving, oblivious that the effect can be similar and the consequences
just as horrifying."

REJECTED SUPERMARKET FOOD FEEDS 5,000
18 November 2011 Last updated at 12:46 GMT
Wonky carrots, misshapen potatoes and tonnes of food rejected by the supermarkets are to be used to give about
5,000 people a free lunch.
The event in Trafalgar Square in London aims to prove that a lot of the food binned in the UK could have been eaten.
Official figures released this week suggest the average British family wastes £680 worth of food a year.
Organisers want people to sign a pledge promising to reduce their food waste and asking firms to do the same.
Campaigner, Tristram Stuart says we are currently wasting around a third of the world's food supply.
So, if you usually throw out those misshapen or battered foods maybe it is time to rethink, they could provide you
with that extra meal.

SPACIOUS LIVES IN TINY SPACES
In Japan, many homes are small. Some homes are so small that they have a special name – kyosho jutaku – ultrasmall homes. These often sit on land no bigger than a two-car garage, or on narrow strips of land wide enough for
just one car. Bill Rutherford of Homes Magazine recently traveled to Tokyo and spoke to architect Kaito Yoshida, a
designer of ultra-small homes. Yoshida designed and lives in his own home, situated on a strip of land only two
meters wide.
Rutherford:
When did you move into this house?
Yoshida:
I bought the land about seven years ago and spent two years planning how to use the space. I’ve
been living alone here for four years.
Rutherford:
Tell me about the design process.
Yoshida:
As you can imagine, I couldn’t use old-fashioned techniques for a space this narrow. I used the latest
technology possible – lots of glass, plastic, even paper. It’s pretty modern.
Rutherford:
But not big…
Yoshida:
No. The house is only 1.7 meters wide and 14 meters long. It’s so narrow that I can only fit a single
bed in the bedroom, for example.
Rutherford:
So your house is pretty cramped?
Yoshida:
I wouldn’t say that. It feels big because I’ve included high ceilings. In small spaces, having high
ceilings, preferably ones with lots of windows in them, makes the space feel much bigger.
Rutherford:
Your house has a lot of natural light.
Yoshida:
Yes, and because it’s small, it’s really easy to keep warm in the winter. It’s pretty energy-efficient.
Rutherford:
How have you organized each room?
Yoshida:
In ultra-small houses, most rooms need to serve more than one purpose. For example, I have a TV in
my bedroom. It’s such a small room that I can’t have both a bed and a sofa in there. So my bed folds
up into a couch during the day. When I watch television, I sit on the sofa. When I go to bed, the
couch becomes a bed. My living room becomes a bedroom.
Rutherford:
That’s convenient.
Yoshida:
Yes, it is. Living alone makes a big difference too. This house is so small, it would be difficult to share
it with another person for a long period of time.
Rutherford:
Thank you so much for your time. Your house is amazing.
Yoshida:
Thank you.
