THE CASE OF THE OLD BROKEN STOVE
Some time ago I discovered that the old stove in my kitchen was broken. I didn't foresee any great
difficulty in getting it fixed, as there are many antique stores near the Golden Gate Park which is forty
minutes' by car from my apartment, so I set forth one morning carrying the stove in a cab. I went into the
first store confidently expecting a friendly reception.
I was quite wrong. The man I approached wouldn't look at it. I wasn't worried; after all, it was only the
first try and there are many more stores nearby.
The reaction at the second store was just the same, and at the third, the fourth and the fifth.
At the sixth store I placed the cooker gently on the floor so as not to damage it more and said `Would you
fix this cooker?' The polite owner looked it over carefully and said, „Yes, but it will take at least a week.‟ I
happily said „No problem, since the repair is done.‟ „OK, I'll fix this for you for five hundred bucks' „You
must be kidding. It cost me two hundred dollars. I‟m sorry, but it isn‟t worth it.‟ I said.
At last, I left the shop and decided to go back home and fix it by myself.

DAVID'S STORY
David Ndayisenga, a small boy from the north-eastern province of a remote African country, is twelve years
old. He goes to Kagiza School, where he loves playing sports, studying languages and working in the school garden.
He is bright, mischievous, athletic, energetic and fearless. But David hasn't always been such a bright and lively child.
He was born into a poor family with six children. His father was a farmer with a small patch of land. When
David was a small child life was very hard. His father worked long hours to make a living for his family but the
children were often hungry. David and his brothers helped to grow maize, beans and potatoes and to look after the
goats and sheep. David's special job was to get water every day.
When he was nine years old there was a terrible drought in the country. The animals died, the crops failed
and families starved. Two of David's brothers died. Gregoire, a volunteer worker, remembers the nine-year- old
David: ' He was a frightened little boy. He'd lost two of his brothers. He was thin and ill. He followed me everywhere
with his large, sad eyes.'

QUESTÃO 18
DRINKING AND DRIVING DON'T MIX
DRINKING AND DRIVING DON'T MIX
DRINKING AND DRIVING DON'T MIX
No matter how many times you've heard it; there are people who just don't get it. In fact, every 30 minutes,
someone in the U.S. dies in an alcohol-related crash. And last year alone over one million people were injured in
alcohol-related traffic crashes.
We want to tell everyone: kids, parents and all licensed drivers why no one should drive a car, or ride in a car with
someone who is under the effects of alcohol. It just doesn't make sense. Even to a dummy.
How does alcohol affect a person's ability to drive?
The more a person drinks, the more their ability to make crucial driving decisions becomes impaired. After just one
drink, a driver can begin to lose their ability to perform the tasks necessary to drive a car: braking, steering, changing
lanes, and using judgment to adjust to changing road conditions. At a certain point, a driver will become legally
intoxicated and can be arrested for attempting to operate a motor vehicle. 06- Read the first paragraph and choose
the correct alternative.

A few years ago, Julia Bradford was a high school student in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was excited about going to
college to get a degree in business. “I had a nice life: I had stylish clothes, a brand new car and my future looked
great. I wanted to go to college and get a job running a business. I wanted to get rich.”
Everything changed in August, 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Julia‟s house was soon under water.
Her car disappeared in the flood, and she and her family left New Orleans with only the clothes on their backs. They
were lucky to get out.
Julia spent the next year finishing high school and working in a fast food restaurant in Ashton, Texas. Her family
decided not to return to New Orleans immediately after the hurricane, but Ashton didn‟t feel like home. She became
temperamental and depressed. At the same time, Julia met other victims of the hurricane in Ashton. “People lost so
much. They lost family, friends and neighbors. They lost their schools, their jobs, and their homes. And still, they
were cheerful and polite. I really started to think about my priorities,” she said. “And I changed.”
Julia began taking courses at a university in Ashton and, instead of earning a business degree, she decided to become
a teacher. She‟s now a student teacher at Ashton Elementary School. Many of the families she knew from New
Orleans still live near her and their children are her students. “I decided I wanted to make a difference and help
people,” Julie said. “Being a teacher is a great way to do that.”
Julia said, “I used to dream about a high-paying job and expensive vacations. But I realized that other things are
much more important.” She doesn‟t have an apartment and, after her family moved back to New Orleans, she rented
a room from a large family in her neighborhood, a family that lost everything in the hurricane. “Living with so many
people has changed me too. I can‟t worry much about what‟s mine and what‟s theirs. We‟re a family. It‟s all ours.”
Recently Julia was offered a job with a higher salary at a school in a wealthy suburb outside New Orleans. But Julia‟s
not going back. “I‟m staying here. Ashton is my life.”
