“Has Vision a History ? Style, Image,
Medium and the Plasticity of Perception”

The seminar aims at analyzing the possible correlation between the history of
representation and figuration on one side, and the history of perception on the other side.
Are styles in visual arts just a question of cultural expressions? Or do they relate to the
bodily and perceptual (mainly, but not exclusively optical) systems? Continental and
analytical perspectives will be investigated and compared. Eventually, this problematic
constellation will be considered within the wider frame of the contemporary discussion
regarding the plasticity of perception and the modularity of the mind.
