Língua Inglesa IV – A Compreensão e produção oral Lesson 01 Vocabulary Development Bits of culture In Britain young people (teenagers) start dating around the age of 14 or 15. In the UK it’s common for young people to go out on a date without their parents. Teenagers usually go out to watch a film, attend a party or watch a concert or other event. Usually young people in the UK go on dates with people they know for fun. Going on a date doesn’t mean the couple will get married. Teenagers usually chose their own dates however sometimes they meet someone they haven’t met before, this is called a “blind date”. Sometimes two couples go on a date as a group and this is called a “double date”. When a couple go out on a date sometimes they share the cost or “go Dutch”. However sometimes the boy will pay. (adapted from: http://pc171115.pc.waseda.ac.jp/ccdl/ET/GEC/inter/u14/gi_u14.htm) In Canada and the USA a “boyfriend” or “girlfriend” means a romantic friend, lover, NOT just a friend. There are different degrees of boyfriend and girlfriend. If you are seeing / dating someone it may or may not be serious, meaning that you may or may not date other people. If it is a serious (committed) relationship, of course you would not go on a date with a different person. Dating As we could see in the listening and speaking session, Angel was trying to fix Debbie out with a guy. Now she’s helping Kent (her best friend) to find a girlfriend. Kent has already had one bad experience double dating and Angel is trying to convince him to go on a blind date. Before listening to their conversation try to match the words below with their translation. 1. to ask someone out To ask someone to go on a date with you; to ask someone (who you are attracted to) to meet you for a drink, coffee, etc. 2. to go on a blid date ( ) Um rolo ( ) Dividir as despesas com as saídas To out with someone you have never seen 3. to make out ( ) Dar uma de cupido To kiss passionately, etc 4. to break up with ( ) Trair (passar chifre) To stop seeing each other. to end a (romantic) relationship. 5. to cheat on ( ) Dar um gelo Informal - to be sexually unfaithful (often fol. by on) 1 Língua Inglesa IV – A Compreensão e produção oral 6. to dump somebody ( ) Fazer as pazes depois de uma briga To dismiss somebody 7. to go dutch ( ) Sair com alguém que não se conhece To have each person pay his or her own expenses 8. to go steady ( ) Dar o bolo, dar o balão em alguém. To fix someone up or to set someone up is to arrange a date for that person. Double date - when two couples go on a date together. Double dating is NOT when one man has two girlfriends, or a girl has two boyfriends. This situation is called twotiming. “He is two-timing on his girlfriend with another woman.” Get engaged – To get engaged is to promise to get married. An engagement happens after one person (traditionally the man) proposes to the other person. After someone is engaged, we call the man a fiancé and the woman a fiancée.
