REVISTA RECER 2010/11 • Novembro – Fevereiro Mais reabilitação, melhor futuro More rehabilitation, a better future A degradação do edificado urbano de muitas cidades e vilas portuguesas exige uma acção concreta e consequente. The deterioration of the urban built environment in many Portuguese cities and towns calls for concrete and consequential action. The abandoned or severely deteriorated buildings in historic centres in what are fairly significant locations are added to the poor state of the housing stock, which is ageing prematurely. It is this abandonment that fosters the growing desertification of the centres of the main cities in this country, in particular Lisbon and Porto. Society and the State have shown a willingness to act in order to reverse this situation. But it will take a lot more than willingness... editorial We must emphasise that in the last twenty years, not only has little been done for urban rehabilitation, but new housing developments continued to be built, in a policy of more concrete and more asphalt, which resulted in the built heritage being abandoned, without taking into account the costs involved. As the end of the year approaches, marked by budgetary issues, fewer new housing developments, with their attendant street layouts, may imply a reduction in costs both in the short run and in the medium run, in particular given the costs of new construction, which are on average higher than the costs of rehabilitation. In this context, urban rehabilitation and regeneration - a topic to which we have made a serious contribution by organising the MORE seminar - emerge as unavoidable alternatives, especially since they may directly or indirectly generate business. Estimates put the value of the potential urban building rehabilitation market at around 100 billion euros. An analysis of the European reality, where urban rehabilitation accounts for up to 40% of total construction, is in itself instructive, when we realise that in Portugal that proportion is 6.2%. Urban rehabilitation is not simply a technical or economic option. It involves a change in attitudes and a new philosophy of life. Saving, fixing, reusing, repairing are words that we have gradually stopped using, replacing them with an intense consumerist outlook. This has distanced us from the serious and significant things in life. They travelled on to Darei, where they admired the Casa de Darei country home and the entrance to the dirt road that runs alongside the reservoir of the Fagilde dam. Then they travelled up towards the town of Fagilde, entering one of the places with a view of the valley of the river Dão, where the boundaries of the municipalities of Mangualde and Viseu lie. Next, they travelled down towards the Monastery of Santa Maria de Maceira Dão, a must-see site in the area. The final ascent was to return to the starting point. And so, tiring but rewarding on various levels, ended the “Mines Route” mountain biking trail, which MOTA CERAMIC SOLUTIONS, one of the European leaders in the supply of raw materials for the ceramics industries, organised for its clients on the 26th of June. To mark the New Generations month, in September, the Oliveira do Bairro Rotary Club, together with the local Secondary School (ESOB), the Instituto de Promoção Social de Bustos – Colégio Frei Gil (IPSB) and the Portuguese Rotary Foundation, with Recer’s backing, once again awarded the best final year students in the municipality. The prize went out to the students Maria Pinheiro Gaio Seabra Rato, from ESOB, and Ana Sofia Moreira Ribeiro, from IPSB. During the ceremony, Antero Calvo, Chairman of Recer’s Board of Directors, emphasised that Recer was honoured to be called upon to collaborate in an initiative which he believes is the country’s priority, education. “By wining this battle, we will beat the crisis”, he stressed. Recer is one of the companies that receives interns from the Escola Profissional de Aveiro, which this academic year organised work placements for over 300 students. The purpose of these internships is to promote the acquisition of professional competencies in real work environments, offering an opportunity to apply knowledge acquired in the classroom in a practical context. The key expectation of most of these students is that the doors to the job market will open up in the short run. “We have all been students at some point and, directly or indirectly, we are familiar with the anxiety of reaching the end of an academic cycle without any employment prospects. That’s why we actively cooperate with this sort of initiative, which can also bring benefits to us, both in terms of knowledge and in terms of diversifying the competencies of employees”. 9 10 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 Novos Desafios na Aplicação de Cerâmica New Challenges in Fixing Ceramic Tiles Susana Marvão Chefe de Produto Colagem de Cerâmica O constante desenvolvimento tecnológico da indústria cerâmica tem conduzido ao aparecimento de materiais com qualidade acrescida e propriedades cada vez mais técnicas do ponto de vista mecânico, dimensão arrojada e design mais atractivo o que permite a projectistas e particulares pôr à prova a sua criatividade. REVISTA RECER 2010/11 • Novembro – Fevereiro The ongoing technological development in the ceramics industry has led to the emergence of higher quality materials with increasingly technical mechanical properties, in bold sizes and with a more attractive design, providing designers and individuals an opportunity to put their creativity to the test. The sharp growth in the use of porcelain stoneware pieces, and in the trend for using large formats both on walls and on floors, represents a challenge in terms of fixing the tiles, leading to a constant search for new adhesives. The porcelain stoneware pieces, or more recently the porcelain stoneware thin plates – Planitum by Recer – are examples of the evo- lution of ceramic materials into new fields of application. One of the most useful uses of these pieces is in renovation work, since their approximately 3mm thickness, low weight and the available formats mean they can be used on old surfaces, often ceramic, without losing useful space and with no need for demolition. The reduction in costs and execution times ends up being a decisive factor. Fixing this particular type of ceramic product, with a large size and reduced thickness, when renovating an environment, requires precision in the execution to ensure the end result does not disappoint. Tolerance for errors is minor and therefore correct planning, assessment of the fixing conditions and the adhesives to be used are crucial before beginning the work. Apart from the necessary strength of the base, its smoothness is vital for the final effect. A piece that is large and thin requires a perfectly level base. Equally, the adhesive chosen must be suited to the needs of a renovation project, that is, apart from the high degree of adherence to bases without water absorption, it should be easy to work with, have a good performance and fast setting to meet the execution deadlines, which are normally quite tight. Aware of the new trends in the market, SaintGobain Weber Portugal brings together a solutions range that meet the needs of renovation projects, which in this case includes weber. col clean light. The main advantages of this product are its high technical performance – high adherence and deformability, 30% higher performance when compared with traditional cementitious adhesives and low release of dust during the preparation stage (90% lower). These characteristics are quite valuable if we consider that most renovation work in private homes is partial and that the homes are often inhabited. Since space for storing materials is scarce in these situations, the product is available in 15 kg bags with handles. Since this is a high performance adhesive, in fact it is as if one were using a 25 kg bag. The work should be executed bearing in mind that the joints must be appropriate for the size of the pieces and usage conditions of the space – for example, on heated floors, the joints should be wider than normal and movement joints should be determined by the total area covered. With the materials currently available in the market, both in terms of ceramic products and in terms of adhesives - where the series Planitum by Recer and weber.col clean light are good examples - renovating inhabited indoor spaces thus becomes simpler and easier. The Champalimaud Foundation - Research Centre for the Unknown, marks a ‘New Age’, which will be perpetuated in the Recer finishing ceramic products created for this space, that is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer and the neurosciences. Built with the ambition of the time of the Gamas, on a symbolic site in the Pedrouços waterfront area, where the Portuguese set off from on their voyages of discovery, the Champalimaud Foundation research centre aims to be a leading scientific research hub, providing the best conditions to ensure that Portuguese and foreign researchers and academics can develop projects with clinical applications in the field of neurosciences and oncology. As predicted, the construction of the two buildings took two years: they were presented and inaugurated during the ceremonies for the commemoration of the Portuguese Republic, in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Aside from the aesthetic boldness of the project, by the architect Charles Correa, the use of around 10 000 m2 of Recer ceramic tiles is also noteworthy – and the name of the collection could not be better suited to the purpose of the centre. The New Age porcelain tile series, in the 60x120 format, was the Recer collection developed specifically to decorate this leading translational multidisciplinary biomedicine research centre. The Centre, which involved an investment of 100 million euros, will employ 350 to 400 scientists from all over the world once it is fully up and running, and will see around 300 patients per day, since it combines research with clinical work (prevention, diagnosis and treatment). 13 14 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 Mobis Awards Recer entre as melhores da década Recer is one of the best of the decade A X Gala Prémio Mobis encheu o Salão Nobre do Edifício da Alfândega do Porto na noite do passado dia 17 de Setembro. On the 26th of October, Recer organised a seminar at the Belém Cultural Centre dedicated to the theme of rehabilitation and renovation of the urban and built environment. The seminar, entitled “MORE – more rehabilitation, cities that are more alive”, aimed to contribute to the broad debate on the theme of urban rehabilitation and its various dimensions – economic, technical and political. According to the latest Euroconstruct figures (2009), in Portugal the production volume of rehabilitation works represents 25% of total production in construction, a figure which is very different from the average for European countries, where the share of rehabilitation work is 50%. Also according to the figures from the European Construction Industry Federation, Portugal is one of the countries with the lowest level of investment in the rehabilitation of residential buildings (6.2% of total production), in sharp contrast to countries such as Germany, Italy and France. In the civil engineering segment, repair/maintenance works account for less than 10% of all work carried out. The result is a significant deterioration of the built environment in metropolitan areas and the ensuing phenomenon of urban decline. It therefore represents a clear opportunity in a market to which Recer has shown itself to be strongly committed. Participants in the seminar included the Vice-President and City Councillor for Urban Planning at Lisbon City Council, the architect Manuel Salgado; Professor Augusto Mateus, from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (Higher Institute for Economics and Management); the president of the Order of Engineers, Carlos Matias Ramos; the president of AECOPS, Ricardo Pedrosa Gomes; the architect Vítor Mestre, representing the city councillor of Porto Municipal Council, the architect Correia Fernandes; the Chairman of the Urban Land Institute - Portugal, Francisco Rocha Antunes; the architect André Caiado, from Contacto Atlântico Arquitectura; and the president of the board of directors at FundBox SGFII, Rui Alpalhão. The talks by the speakers were structured around two core lines of thought. In the morning session, the focus was on analysing the future from different institutional perspectives, through representatives of the agents in the sector, in the context of the new challenges to rehabilitation in Lisbon and Porto. These contributions were followed by a debate moderated by José Gomes Ferreira. In the afternoon session, the aim was to identify the new business opportunities resulting from a commitment to urban rehabilitation. O responsável da AECOPS afirmou destaque zoom in Investment in urban rehabilitation is vital for economic development, for protecting our heritage, for sustainable development and social and territorial cohesion. This is how we may sum up the various talks by the speakers at the More Seminar, which brought together representatives of agents in the construction sector, planning specialists and economists, at Recer’s invitation, on the 26th of October in the CCB. The aim of the seminar was to actively contribute to the revitalisation of cities, to improvements in their housing stock and amenities, as well as their capacity to attract new residents and companies incorporating a high degree of know-how. Essentially, to discuss the future challenges and business opportunities for urban rehabilitation in Portugal... “It’s one more step, but it’s taken with full awareness that rehabilitation is a path with a future and an opportunity for the country”. This is how Antero Calvo, chairman of Recer’s board of directors, described this event organised by the company. Augusto Mateus, one of the invited speakers, emphasised that the regeneration of cities is more important than rehabilitation, since in the current social and macroeconomic climate they will be the driving force for development. “The deterioration of the urban built environment in many Portuguese cities and towns has already reached an alarming level, requiring that those in charge, be they public or private bodies, take clear, concrete and consequential action”, Antero Calvo stressed. According to the vice-president of Lisbon City Council, Manuel Salgado, there is already a collection of instruments to boost rehabilitation and reverse the trend for population exodus seen in Lisbon over the last few years, a city where there are 12 thousand buildings in need of serious rehabilitation. The speakers agreed on the leading role that should be given to rehabilitation and, therefore, in their view, there must be an end to the culture of disinvestment in building conservation. This is really a priority issue for boosting the construction sector, which plays a key role in the Portuguese economy, both directly and through the knock-on effects on the whole sector. As the president of AECOPS, Ricardo Pedrosa Gomes, put it, “rehabilitation is vital for controlling unemployment and for economic growth, and it involves no negative side effects in terms of the national accounts or the balance of payments with other countries”. The president of the Order of Engineers, in turn, emphasised that “the protection of our heritage and urban rehabilitation are strategic sectors for the future of our cities and of our construction sector”, arguing that “it’s not because of a lack of knowledge or ability to intervene on the part of designers and construction companies that urban rehabilitation interventions are not realised”. The issues involved are, primarily, a rental law that is unsuitable for stimulating investment in the rehabilitation of older buildings, an excess of bureaucracy, the complexity of the licensing ‘circuit’ and a prejudicial fiscal policy. For Vítor Mestre, in charge of the Architectural Heritage Speciality College of the Order of Architects, there is a pressing need to “densify cities, to bring more people to the centres”, given that rehabilitation will never be possible while there are Municipal Master Plans that encourage new construction in new neighbourhoods. “An analysis of the European reality, where urban rehabilitation accounts for up to 40% of total construction, is clearly instructive, when we realise that in Portugal that proportion is a mere 6.2%”, the chairman of Recer’s board of directors pointed out. For Ricardo Pedrosa Gomes, we must adopt measures “that make it economically uninteresting to own property in a state of disrepair”, and it is essential to “provide financing solutions that allow interested owners to carry out renovation work”. Ricardo Pedrosa Gomes also criticised the fact that the “Urban Rehabilitation Legislation, published one year ago, has not yet been regulated nor has it produced any practical effects”. As AECOPS recognises, current rehabilitation needs cover around 38% of the Portuguese residential stock, and it is therefore important to create the conditions necessary for public and private investment. Apart from being a pillar for the protection of our heritage, urban rehabilitation was, during the seminar, deemed essential for recovering the economy of proximity, for integrated territorial development, for the quality of life of urban centres, while also minimising the impact of urban development on the environment by reducing the consumption of raw materials and providing the possibility to make the most of existing resources. As Professor Augusto Mateus highlighted, we must “build the city, in the heart of the city”. In terms of business opportunities, we must create mechanisms that make investment in the regeneration of buildings economically viable and attractive. “There is room for manoeuvre for investors to be willing to intervene in the residential market with an urban rehabilitation strategy, but these strategies must create value”, Rui Alpalhão, president of the Executive Board at FundBox SGFII SA, remarked, providing as examples investments in this field with internal rates of return ranging from 2% to 9%. “The indebtedness of households (40 year loans account for 50%) is a problem which can be turned into an opportunity”, Augusto Mateus added. Francisco Rocha Antunes, representing the Urban Land Institute, a not-for-profit organisation in the real estate sector which aims to promote the adoption of better practices for the development of the sector, presented some success stories in the field of urban rehabilitation, such as the cases of Manchester and Glasgow. He also stressed the important collection of good practices which should underlie real estate operations in the field of rehabilitation, such as recognising the unique character of cities, anticipating demographic changes, identifying cities with talent and, among others, adopting long term perspectives. The architect André Caiado, from Contacto Atlântico Arquitectura, agrees with this perspective as a way of achieving wealth: “The greatest asset of humanity is many men together. The richest cities are those with more than 10 million inhabitants. It is man that holds and generates wealth”. Antero Calvo, in his opening speech, had already mentioned “that estimates put the value of the potential urban building rehabilitation market at around 100 billion euros”. 19 20 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 destaque zoom in MORE+ As propostas Recer para a reabilitação Recer suggestions for rehabilitation A final, que diferenças separam um azulejo criado há dezenas ou até mesmo centenas de anos de uma réplica acabada de sair dos fornos Recer? Solange Jesus transferred to Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP) and Débora Santos was recruited by Sport Lisboa e Benfica (SLB). Both athletes will be competing for their new teams in the 2010/2011 season, which began on the 1st of October. Solange Jesus grew up in Lugar do Rêgo, in the parish of Oiã in Oliveira do Bairro, and developed her passion for athletics while at the Serena athletics club, which she has represented up until now. It was wearing the Adercus – Recer colours that, from a young age, she began her rise to leading positions at a national level. As a juvenile, she won her first national title in the 3000m in Caldas da Rainha. This was the first of many, especially in the 3000m obstacle race in which she specialised in the junior category. On road, cross country, indoor tracks and outdoor tracks, many were the medals won in national championships, at the junior, under-23 and senior levels... On the international stage, this athlete represented the Portuguese team in European cross country championships, as a junior, under-23 and senior. Débora Santos, from Bustos, after having been national cross country champion in her first season as a junior, will now help Benfica fight for a place on the podium at the European champions clubs cup for cross country and tracks. She will continue to train in the same group, led by Ricardo Esteves, and is already preparing a training programme to take part in the European cross country championship, which will take place in December. Portugal is the organising country and the event will be held in Albufeira. Representing Adercus – Recer, Débora Santos won an amazing victory in the national cross country championship, with a 34 second lead over the runner-up, who will now be her teammate at Benfica. The last season was marked by her international debut, representing Portugal in the world cross country championship, as well as by her cross country victory in Cáceres, Spain. 23 24 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 Essentials A essência da vida The essence of life apostas bets on O s prazeres da vida estão nas pequenas coisas. The joys of life are in the little things. In the new Essentials collection, the power of ‘good design’ emerges, with the restoration of its true vocation – to improve people’s quality of life – in a clear demonstration of a new, more responsible mentality, on course to ensuring the sustainability of an increasingly interconnected community. Striving to give depth to and explore the real value of things, which presupposes a change in the pattern of consumption, the new Essentials collection has a utilitarian nature, it aims to provide answers to needs, while still being both functional and emotional. This is the essence of life... which the new PURPLE STONE porcelain tile series tries to capture. This product bears a perfect resemblance to natural amethyst, with all the richness derived from the different tones within the same colour. This series is available in the market in the ‘plus’ version, with anti-slip properties (R12), which is therefore suitable for outdoor use; and in the smooth version, perfect for indoor use and/or façades. In terms of complements, apart from the original 30x60 paving slabs, Recer provides mosaic tiles fixed to bases, steps and skirting. Description: Purple Stone Plus – formats: 30x60, 45x45 Purple Stone – formats 30x60, 30x60R, 45x45, 45x45R Colours in the series – Sahara (beige), Suez (ash grey), Cairo (brown) Complements – 30x30 paving slabs, 30x60 paving slabs, 4.5x4.5 mosaic tiles, steps, skirting and all of the combinations that Recer provides as ‘Multi’ cut solutions. An excellent alternative to natural resources Issues related to the sustainability of the planet, particularly from an environmental perspective, should be a concern for everyone, and especially for all activities related to the construction industry. This is why today porcelain stoneware – a ceramic material with low water absorption, high strength and highly resistant to wear and tear and scratches – is one of the materials widely used in building construction, in the category of finishing materials. Aside from these characteristics, the low weight per square metre of this material, when compared with natural stone (40-50% lower), brings considerable advantages to its use, for example for tiling façades. On the other hand, the technology available today means these aspects can be combined with the random nature of the design. Thus the necessary conditions are set to help protect an increasingly scarce resource – natural stone – and avoid the environmental impact inherent to quarrying, cutting and shaping ornamental stones. «Solucionar necessidades, sendo igualmente funcionais e emocionais são os objectivos de uma nova geração de produtos Recer», assegura Miguel Once again, Recer took part in Cersaie – the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tiles and Bathroom Furnishings of Bologna, which was held between the 28th of September and the 2nd of October in Italy. In the 28th edition of this exhibition, Recer (Pavilion 19 - Stand C40-D39) presented its latest developments in ceramic floor and wall tiles to the international markets, under the theme ‘Essentials’. “With Essentials we explore the true value of things, presupposing a change in what we believe is a new pattern of consumption. We are aware that products should essentially be useful, satisfying needs, being functional and contributing to creating or sustaining emotions. Each product contains and conveys a story, a unique personality, and value is given to its ability to endure the test of time, both in light of its quality and its aesthetics, helping to create new lifestyle approaches. We also recognise the need to convey the product seriously and never detach it from the service dimension we associate with it”, Fernando Simões, in charge of research and development at Recer, explains, regarding the manner in which that concept was embodied in the Recer stand, which covered 192 m2 (16 x 12 m). With three fronts, two of which were completely glazed with glass, the stand allowed an almost complete view of the interior, without losing any of the space’s privacy. The front was ‘blind’ and carried the image of the Essentials concept. The more than 300 visitors to the Recer stand at Cersaie admired the spirit of this suggestion, which is to improve people’s quality of life with products that are essentially useful, where the spotlight was on the porcelain series Purple Stone. “Providing solutions to needs, while being both functional and emotional, are the aims of a new generation of Recer products” Miguel Rosa, Recer’s export manager, stresses. In the largest international showcase of the sector, covering a 176 000 square metre exhibition area, “the improvement and resulting acceptance of Recer products are well-known and acknowledged by the market. As would be expected, all the investment in the development of design and technology over time, which never ceases, results in products that are better suited to the needs of the market. We strive to always meet the standards of people who are looking for the essential (aesthetics and quality)”, Fernando Simões adds. In this context, the outcome of this year’s participation in Cersaie could be nothing but positive. “Bearing in mind that the construction sector is going through one of the worst crises in living memory, it is very important to stimulate this market with suggestions and products better suited to the needs of the markets”, Miguel Rosa argues. The future, according to Fernando Simões, belongs to “companies which, like Recer, know how to interpret and, in a timely manner, develop the answers that the market, which is undergoing significant changes, requires. And we are already on this path, started with ‘Ceramic for the Senses’”. 27 28 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 Constrói Angola Uma procura mais rigorosa A more stringent demand P ortugal liderou a participação estrangeira na oitava edição da feira Constrói Angola 2010, com cerca de 40 empresas presentes no certame, entre as quais a Recer, cujos principais destaques em Luanda foram as colecções porcelânicas Inout, Living, Planitum, bem como a série Shell. In Luanda, the company showcased the Inout, Living and Planitum porcelain tile collections, as well as the Shell series. “All the collections received a very positive welcome, in particular the Shell series. But the preferences depend on the profile of the visitors. Architects admired the Inout and Planitum porcelain tiles because these are more technical products. Planitum is a revolutionary collection, thanks to its 3+1mm thickness and large size plates, measuring 100x300cm and 120x360cm respectively”, Aniano Almeida, in charge of Recer’s sales to Portuguese-speaking markets, explains. With an in-depth knowledge of the changes in local tastes and aesthetics, Aniano Almeida is explicit in recognising that “the Angolan market is more demanding, in line with international markets. From one year to the next, there is a more stringent demand, from the point of view of quality and design”. Ministers, Secretaries of State and other important figures made a point of visiting Recer’s stand. The architect Luisa Carp, from Costa Lopes Arquitectura, one of the leading architecture offices in Angola, and the engineer Francisco Carriço, from Edigema (Edifer Group), joined by Aniano Almeida in the photo on the top, were just two of the many professionals who had the opportunity to discover Recer’s new products. The exhibition attracted 315 companies, 70% from Angola and the remainder from countries such as Portugal, Brazil, Germany, Dubai, China, Spain, Italy, Egypt and South Korea. The companies from the last two countries were taking part in the event for the first time. Exhibitors had 13 thousand square metres at their disposal, spread across three pavilions and the outdoor area of one of them, an area where the spotlight was on the quality improvements in the exhibition of ceramic wall coverings, equipment related to the environment, renewable energies and water treatment. Following a few years moving between lower-ranking teams, Rui Barros returned to Futebol Clube do Porto in the aftermath of the Champions League victory, at the end of the 1980s. Launched by Tomislav Ivic, he played an important role in the victories in the Intercontinental Cup and in the European Super Cup. In the latter, he scored the only goal which saw F.C. Porto defeat Ajax, in the first leg, in Holland. This goal, scored after an opening by Fernando Gomes, isolating him in front of the goalkeeper, summed up the qualities that made him a leading player in Europe: his speed and technique. Naturally, he signed for Juventus. He played there for two years and to this day he is still considered one of the glories of the vecchia signora. Between 1990 and 1993 he played for Arsène Wenger’s Monaco, alongside George Weah. In the 1993/94 season he played for Marseille, with Futre, before returning to F.C. Porto to become one of the engineers behind the five consecutive championship wins. After the end of his career he kept his ties to F.C. Porto, where he has been an assistant coach for the past five years. Today, at the age of 45, he observes opponents and players for this club, which has a special place in his heart, and, as a businessman, manages three Soccer Place centres. The latest is in Amares, where Recer’s finishing ceramic products played a special role. What motivated you to invest in Soccer Place, in Besteiros, Amares? I did this because I already have two academies, one in Leça and the other in Rebordosa, which work well. This time, I acted in partnership with my friend François Brandão Soares, who is from the area. The ideal place emerged and we set up another Soccer Place, here in Amares. Since you were a child, what has changed in society to justify the existence of football schools? In the past, we didn’t talk about football schools because we’d go out on the street. Our parents would let us be and we’d learn to play football. We made the rules, the goalposts, acted as referees and everything was much more natural. Nowadays parents don’t allow their children that freedom, because the world has changed. This complements what kids can’t do on the street. The sooner they learn, the sooner they have rules, the better players they’ll become. On the other hand, it also acts as a complement to what some don’t have at home: discipline. Nowadays parents arrive home late and they don’t really talk much to their children, who are brought up by the distorted models on the television. What sets Soccer Place apart from other football schools? It’s different because it’s more comprehensive. It has a gym and swimming pool, while most just have a lawn for playing football. The main advantage of this school is the services, which can be adjusted to the kids or to their families. Why just three age groups (6-8; 8-10; 10-12)? It is at these ages that kids are more willing to learn. After the age of 12, they want to combine learning with competition. And at the moment we don’t compete. We do practice games, including with other schools, but we don’t enter into any competitions. How many children are currently enrolled in the school? At the moment we have 30-35 kids. Aged between 6 and 10, there are 20-25. The remainder are over 10 or under 5. Is this an activity that’s affected by the seasons in any way? In fact, especially at the open-air schools, I see that when there’s a harsh winter, parents don’t want to take their kids there. Here, sometimes, it works the other way around. It’s in the winter that we see the most kids. It’s sheltered, it’s a pavilion. 32 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 Some of the infrastructures at the Soccer Place here in Amares were covered using Recer ceramic products. Sanisousa - Materiais de Construção, Lda Have you had the opportunity to recognise in any of the kids a potential for professional football which matched yours? The Soccer Place schools are still very recent. We cannot achieve a long term perspective. Obviously, we recognise talent in many kids, but there are stages, that everyone has to go through, which are decisive. There are cases where the kids are exceptional players up until the age of 12 and then, suddenly, for no apparent reason, at 14 they no longer have the same quality. I witnessed that at F.C. Porto and in other clubs. They either don’t train as much or they lose some enthusiasm. Only the best can make it past the 14-18 age barrier. The explanation may lie in the pressure they are subject to. And not everyone handles that well. While they’re children, they just want to have fun with the ball. When they grow up, some kids even have trouble sleeping and can actually feel ill. The fear of failing, of being criticised, is frightening. Football should essentially be about fun. A reference in the Gerês region Uma referência na região do Gerês recer world Was it like that when you were a child? Yes. I didn’t have that fear. I wanted to have fun and didn’t think about anything else. Nowadays the kids see the cars, the homes, the famous people on the television. This puts enormous pressure on them and their parents, who think that they’ll all be great players. And it’s not like that. The main thing is to help them and encourage them to practice healthy sports. If they’re players, then very well. If they’re not, they’ll lead a different life. They can’t all be football players. After Futebol Clube do Porto, what plans do you have for your future? I have been an assistant for the senior team at F.C. Porto for the last five years. This year I’ve moved on to the area of observation, which I also enjoy. In the future, I hope to have a career as a main coach. A National Monument of Public Interest since 1977, the Parish Church of S. Vítor, in Braga, stands out from the rest for the 11 700 tiles which cover its interior walls, where blue and white prevail. This richness was necessary to realise the ideals of D. Luís de Sousa, the archbishop of Braga, who ordered this church to be built in 1686 on the ruins of a Romanesque temple. Considered one of the main monuments of religious architecture in the city, this church was designed by Miguel de Lascoal. The stonework is the work of the master masons Pascoal Fernandes and Estêvão Moreira. The tile collection is regarded as one of the best and most impressive in Braga. In fact, inside the church, anyone would be amazed by the fact that the walls are completely covered in tiles. The panels in the Chancel represent scenes from the martyrdom of Saint Victor, and those along the body of the church depict other martyrs and saints from this region, including some bishops of Braga. Of all the panels, the one that stands out is the one on the upper part of the back wall of the choir, representing Saint Paternus presiding over the 5th Council of Toledo (in spite of the historical error: it was in fact presided over by Saint Isidore of Seville, in the year 636). The author of these tiles did not leave a signature, but, based on their resemblance to others in the Lisbon area, for example in Arroiolos, scholars have been able to conclude that they were the work of Gabriel del Barco, from Spain, who set up a workshop in Lisbon (1690-1700) and was deemed “the most illustrious artist in Lisbon’s potteries”. The idea that Gabriel del Barco y Minusca authored these tiles is corroborated by the fact that, on the contract for laying the tiles, it is expressly stated that they were made in Lisbon and that the master layer, also from Lisbon, neither wanted to come and lay them nor provided 37 38 REVISTA RECER Novembro – Fevereiro • 2010/11 foram feitos em Lisboa, e que o mestre assentador, também de Lisboa, não quis vir assentá-los, nem deu as medidas necessárias. The definitive laying was entrusted to João Neto da Costa, who completed the worked to perfection within the agreed 18 month deadline, while the Commission agreed to provide the lime and the olive oil required, as well as set up the scaffolding. Consecration and initial project However, D. Luís de Sousa died in 1690 and never saw the finished work. The building of the church continued during the rule of D. José de Meneses I and was only completed during the rule of the archbishop D. João de Sousa, who consecrated the church on the 19th of March 1698. On the day of the consecration, there was a Pontifical Mass, attended by canons, and Holy Orders were administered. According to D. Luís de Sousa’s initial project, “the body of the church related to the whole parish, and the chancel to the Bishopric. But because that work should be fit for a prince, it should not mix with others: and therefore he summoned Miguel de Lascoal from Viana, an illustrious architect who drew the sketch and an excellent plan. And, afterwards there came masters from Porto, Viana, Guimarães, and beyond, to begin the works”. The archbishop D. Luís de Sousa, who had been a teacher at the University of Coimbra, Bishop of Lamego and Ambassador of the Holy See, was never undeserving of the words used by historians and the public of his day to describe him: “extremely generous and liberal in his charity; and while always giving a lot, to him it always seemed little... if he had all the money in the kingdom, it would still not be enough, for his generosity, to give away to the poor...” In Memórias de Braga we read that D. Luís de Sousa “had the intention of decorating it [the Church of S. Vítor] with worldly, but also spiritual and holy things and refinements (since, for that end, he brought from Rome a vast number of relics of whole bodies, and parts of others, all in coffins with inscriptions), he intended, in that church, to build a wonderful sanctuary, with their frames. All of these relics, just as they were in the coffins, were catalogued, along with the rest of the treasures; and they were ordered to be deposited in the treasure of the See”. The Church of S. Vítor thus occupies a leading position among the various religious monuments in Braga. And it is, for many, the largest and most majestic parish church in the city. It is wrong to view this church in the same way one views the city’s other parish churches. Since the Bishopric was responsible for introducing it, the Church of S. Vítor was not built by the people; it was erected entirely by an archbishop, a man of great spirit and vision, accustomed to “works worthy of princes”, from the capital, and a former ambassador to Rome. This church was built on the top of a small artificially altered elevation – almost like a promontory – which can be seen from various places, including from the city walls. Its inaccessibility was something which helped make it unique and referential. It is interesting that it was also located on the road that connects one of the most important gates to the city – where some years later the Arcade was built – with the Bom Jesus sanctuary. REVISTA RECER 2010/11 • Novembro – Fevereiro Saint Vítor – the Patron According to a longstanding tradition, recorded in several documents, the oldest of which dates back to the 9th century, St Vítor was born in the 3rd century, in Braga. Persecuted by Maximian or Diocletian for refusing to worship the goddess Ceres and the god Silvanus, he was martyred in the 4th century. In 2004, and following a long investigation, the Vatican decided to remove St Vítor of Braga from the list of over 5 000 Catholic saints and beatified men, having concluded that he never existed and was nothing more than a myth. What does the façade tell us? On the façade, which combines Jesuit Mannerism and Baroque styles, we can read two inscriptions: the one on the left, “D. Luís de Sousa, Archbishop and Lord of Braga, Primate of Spain and of the Royal Council of His Majesty”; the one on the right, “This temple was erected almost from the foundations of the ruins of the old one, it was dedicated to St Victor in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord, 1686”. There are also two niches with the sculptures of two archbishops. It is thought that these two niches were initially designed for the sculptures of St Vítor and his sister Saint Suzana (?) or Saint Tecla (?) and it is difficult to establish with certainty the real figures of the archbishops that occupy these niches. Since there is no inscription indicating who is represented, scholars believe that they may be Saint Bento or Saint Antão, or two representations of Saint Geraldo. Crowning the pediment, adorned with the arms of the founding Archbishop, is the archiepiscopal cross. ceramic route Description of the church by its parson in 1758 “The church is large, built anew, rebuilt by the archbishop Dom Luís de Sousa in the year 1686. It is dedicated to the martyr Saint Victor, from Braga, whose body was believed to have been buried on one side of the chancel of the old church, on whose grave lay a wooden tomb, with his angels painted around it, surrounded by wooden rails and a wooden canopy, on four columns so that the people would not tread there and would worship the site. After rebuilding the new church, the archbishop and his ministers went to the said grave and, digging the soil to a depth of eight feet, three chests of white jasper were found, with white jasper canopies, and in order for these not to break, there were iron beams across the top of them. In one of the graves, the remains of a human body were found, except for the head, and these were deemed to belong to Saint Victor, the martyr, since his head is believed to be in the church of Santiago de Compostela. The other two were believed to belong to Saint Silvestre, a martyr, archbishop of this city, and Saint Cucufate, a martyr, also from this city, whose bones, apart from those which were stolen, which some people in this city keep with a very gentle scent, and those that remained, the archbishop had stored in the vestry of the church; and later he ordered a basement to be built in the floor of the chancel, surrounded by walls, where the three tombs with the actual bones were placed and covered with thick stone lintels, with no further investigations into the identities and no certainty of who they belonged to, moving the tombs of the vicars to another place so that there would be no interments on top of the said graves. In the chancel of this church we find the Blessed Sacrament and the imposing image of Saint Victor, with his brotherhood; on the side of the Gospel is the altar of the Child God, with his brotherhood; then, in another archway, lies the altar of Saint Anthony, with a rich brotherhood; on the side of the Epistle is the altar of Saint Susana, a martyr from Braga, with her brotherhood; and a little below, the altar of Saint Sebastian, with his brotherhood. There is also the devotion of the Souls, with a painting in which they are represented, set in the arch of the chancel, and every year anniversary celebrations are held here with many Masses.
