Can you introduce yourself? / Give some information about yourself.
Are you nervous / excited?
What’s your favourite school subject? Which one don’t you like?
What are your plans for the future?
How was your day?
Nice / awful weather today, isn’t it?

2. Yes, of course, I am a little nervous. This exam is very important for me because I need it for getting a good job.
During the last weeks I’ve been learning a lot and working hard on improving my English. So I hope that I’ll be able
to show you everything I’ve learned.
3. Well, there are many subjects I like, but my favourite one is …
… Art because I can realize all my ideas in working on the pictures, paintings or sculptures I make.
… P.E. because it’s a pleasant diversion from the mental work you have to do in subjects like Maths, English
or Biology.
… Maths because I like this kind of brain training although sometimes it’s not easy to solve the different tasks.
Of course, I’m also very interested in English because it’s a very popular language which is spoken all over the
world and it connects people of all nationalities.
4. I’ve got a lot of big plans for my future. On the one hand, I want to get a good job which I enjoy doing and
which helps my personality grow.
On the other hand, I’d like to have a joyful family life and maybe one or two children together with my husband /
wife. If I have enough money, I’ll buy a small house with a nice garden.
Moreover, I want to travel the world and see as many countries as I can to learn something about the different
cultures and ways of life.
6. Yes, it’s really beautiful outside with warm temperatures and sunshine. It’s a nice day for doing a bike tour or
going for a long walk. I hope the weather will stay the same for the rest of the week.
or:
Yes, it’s raining cats and dogs. A terrible weather for people who have to work outside today. But the weather forecast said that the rain would stop tomorrow. I hope to see the sun come out soon.
7. Well, this week I’ve had a lot of things to do. On Tuesday we had our maths test and so I had to do my last preparations on Monday. On Tuesday after the test I played basketball / soccer / table tennis/ … with my best friend. On
Wednesday it was my dad’s birthday and my family went to an Italian restaurant in the evening. And meanwhile I
have prepared for the test today.
8. I was very busy last weekend: On Saturday my friend … had a party in the evening because he celebrated his
17th birthday. It was a great party. On Sunday I had to train with our basketball / football / … team because we’ll play

My day has been quite bad so far because I woke up at four o’clock and couldn’t sleep any more because I was getting so nervous. Then, I broke a plate during my breakfast and at last, my bike had a flat tyre. But now I’ll give my

Mögliche Lösung zu 6. The smoking ban in Bavaria – pros and cons
Seite 11
Last Friday I went out with some friends. We had dinner at our favourite pizza place. When we wanted to leave and
went outside, we saw a group of people who had gone outside to smoke their cigarettes. The smoking ban is a big
topic that is being discussed all over Germany. Of course, there are positive and negative aspects.
M
us
A te
ns r
ic zu
ht r
I’d like to start with some cons of the smoking ban. The government earns a lot of money thanks to the tobacco
industry. In states like Bavaria these profits have dropped since the ban.
Moreover, a lot of smokers don’t want to go to restaurants, cafés or pubs anymore because they can’t smoke their
cigarettes there. But if there aren’t many customers, the restaurants won’t need so many employees and unemployment will rise.
Let’s come to the pros of the smoking ban now. Firstly, everybody knows that smoking isn’t good for your health. It
doesn’t only harm the smoker, but also the people around him. Due to the smoking ban, non-smokers are protected.
Secondly, if children see somebody smoking, this can have a bad influence on them. In fact, some kids might think
that smoking is “cool” – they don’t see the risks for their health.
Finally, in most restaurants or pubs smoking isn’t allowed anymore. Some people have already taken the smoking
ban as an opportunity to stop smoking.
When I think about all the arguments, I come to the conclusion that the smoking ban has got more positive than
negative aspects. There will always be fans and haters of this new system. But isn’t it best to quit smoking?
2.3 Picture Based Communication

1.
Seite 13
a) The picture shows a typical scene on a schoolyard with many different pupils and a teacher. In the background
you can see a ping-pong table with two players, who seem to have great fun with their game. Next to them, on
their right, three pupils are jumping on a hopscotch. In the centre of the painting two girls are talking to each
other. I can imagine that they are talking about a special subject, a class test or maybe about their holidays. Next to
them a young boy is walking towards the gate. He could be a second or third grader because he’s still quite small
and young. Another boy is wheeling his bike into the schoolyard. He’s carrying a schoolbag on his back. Maybe
his school day starts later or he’ll have some afternoon lessons. Finally, you can see a group of three pupils who are
smoking secretly behind some trees. The teenagers hope that they won’t be copped, but at this moment a teacher
is walking by. The viewer doesn’t get to know if they will be detected.
b) I think the three teenagers want to try out something that seems to be new and exciting for them because they
know exactly that smoking is forbidden at their age and especially on the schoolyard. Maybe they also want to
prove their coolness to each other.
c) In my opinion, smoking isn’t cool because it is bad for your health and can even cause cancer. Moreover, smoking costs a lot of money.
d) This picture seems to be typical of a scene of everyday life at school. Most of the kids seem to be quite happy,
but I can imagine that the three smokers aren’t really relaxed because there’s the danger of being caught by the
teacher. The teacher seems to be thinking about something, maybe about a class test, a special pupil or a colleague. I don’t know if he’s alert enough to notice the three smokers.
e) I usually go outside into the schoolyard with some of my friends. We eat our lunch and talk about lessons or our
spare time. Sometimes we also visit some friends of the other tutor groups.

After a long and hard week with a lot of work I enjoy going horseback riding. I like it because you can choose if
you want to have some training in the hall or if you just feel like relaxing and riding through fields and forests.
Horseback riding is a sport that keeps you fit and trains your body. Moreover, you are together with animals and
can care for them and teach them.
Being together with horses and friends is great fun. Some of my friends like horseback riding, too, but I’ve also got
friends whose interests are completely different.
Sometimes I wish I had more time for this hobby, but it’s OK. I can look forward to the weekends or holidays and it
won’t ever get boring.
I think it’s very important for a person to have a hobby because sometimes you need something that is different
from your work and everyday life. If you have a special hobby, you can also meet other people and make some
friends. Having a hobby like mine is good for body and soul.
