German Society of MD Honors Ruck Funeral Homes
Baltimore, MD (awj) - The
German Society of Mar yland
recently held its 229th annual
Awards Banquet in the Adlersaal
of Zion Church in Baltimore. The
honoree at this year's banquet was
Ruck Funeral Homes. Michael J.
Ruck, Sr., President, received the
Distinguished Service Award on
behalf of himself, the Ruck family
and all of their staff. This award is
a high honor that is given annually
to one individual, family and/or
organization of German heritage
with a distinguished record of
service in Maryland. Dr. Holger
Roggelin, Pastor of Zion Church,
and Anja Cyriax, an officer in the
Cultural Af fairs Depar tment,
Embassy of the Federal Republic
of Germany in Washington, DC,
were among the special guests at
this occasion. AATG Maryland/
DC Metro Chapter President
Claudia Bor nholdt and Past
President Deborah McGee
Mif flin, Donald C. Ker r, Jr.,
President of the St. Andrews
Society of Baltimore, and Gerhard
Meinzer, President of the
Association of German-American
Societies of Greater Washington,
DC, were also in attendance.
German Society President Tom
Wer ner opened the awards
ceremony and introduced the
guests at the head table. Ms.
Cyriax extended greetings and
congratulations to the Ruck family
from German Ambassador Peter
Ammon and his staff at the German Embassy. Pastor Siegfried Otto,
Past President of the German
Society, spoke with great
appreciation about the wide range
of achievements and the selfless
volunteerism of Michael Ruck, Sr.,
and the fine reputation of Ruck
Funeral Homes. Then Michael
Ruck, Sr., spoke very informatively
about the histor y of the Ruck
family business. His greatgrandfather, Michael Ruck, after
whom he is named, was an
immigrant from Germany to
Baltimore. His hopes for a good
life for himself and his family were
high, however his legacy has
exceeded all of his expectations
The founder of the first funeral
home bearing the name Ruck was
Michael Ruck's son, Leonard J.
Ruck. Leonard married Margaret
L. Finnegan in 1918 and began an
apprenticeship as an undertaker
at the George Ruth Funeral Home.
After he had earned his license as
a funeral director, he opened his
own funeral home in the living
room of his father-in-law's home
in 1924. This first proprietor
quickly established a fine
reputation for giving compassionate ser vice to bereaved
families and their friends. The
business grew and soon it had
outgrown the family's living room.
Therefore, Leonard Ruck and his
wife Margaret bought a threestory frame and stucco building on
Harford Road in Baltimore. In
1950 this building was replaced by
a new, more modern building. It
was doubled in size in 1960. An
office extension and additional
parking spaces were added in
1963. The company now has three
funeral homes located in Hamilton,
Dundalk and Towson.
The current president of Ruck
Funeral Homes, Michael J. Ruck,
Sr., is a third-generation family
member. His son, Michael J.
Ruck., Jr., represents the fourthgeneration of the family in the
company and serves as its Senior
Vice President. He and his father
maintain the tradition of excellent
ser vice that has become a
hallmark of Ruck Funeral Homes.
The German Society of
Mar yland honored this entre-
preneurial German-American
family for serving the Baltimore
community with outstanding
funeral services over a period of
nearly one centur y. The ceremony in recognition of the Rucks
began with Brigitte Fessenden's
presentation of Baltimore Mayor
Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's citation honoring the Rucks. Then Jim
Schaub, Past President of the
German Society, presented a
second citation. This one was
from the Governor of Maryland,
Martin O'Malley. Tom Werner
presented Michael J. Ruck, Sr.,
with an engraved plaque from the
Society. The program was
brought to a close by Dr.
Mohamed Esa, Chair of the
Banquet Committee, who thanked
each person who had helped make
this evening a great success.

Jahresversammlung des Sänger Chor Newark, Inc.
Clark, NJ (awj) - Wie jedes Jahr
versammelten wir uns am 11. Januar 2013, um unsere jährliche Versammlung abzuhalten. Wir wurden
von unserem Präsidenten, Dieter
Pfisterer, herzlich begrüsst . Er
dankte uns allen für ein beinahe
vollständiges Erscheinen. Zwei
Sänger waren wegen Krankheit
entschuldigt.
Der Sängergruss, unter der Leitung unseres Vizedirigenten, Kurt
Striny, verklang im oberen Saal des
Deutschen Clubs. Während einer
Gedenkminute gedachten wir unseren im letzten Jahr verstorbenen
Sängern, Willi Trabert und Jim
Holcomb. Ruhet in Frieden!
Nun wurden die verschiedenen
Komitees gefragt, ihren Jahresbericht zu geben. Alle waren auf das
Beste vorbereitet und es war eine
Freude zuzuhören, mit wieviel Stolz
diese Berichte vorgelesen wurden.
Alte und neue Geschäfte wurden
besprochen. Die Versammlung
verlief reibungslos.
Der alte Vorstand wurde aufgelöst und Bernard Falk, Vorsitzender des Wahlkomitees, übernahm
die Versammlung. Es wurden zwei
Änderungen vorgenommen, Bill
Horan hat seinen Posten als zweiter Vizepräsident abgegeben, und
Wells Perkins hat diese Arbeit übernommen. Auch Walter Adam gab
seine Arbeit als Korrespondenzsekretär ab, und unser Sänger
Joseph Streit hat diese Arbeit freudig übernommen. Ich werde aber
immer noch diese Artikel in dieser
Zeitung schreiben.

Wir haben Wolfgang Stoebe, der
unsere Anwesenheitsliste führt. Er
berichtete, dass Verschiedene nur
einmal oder zweimal die Singstrunde im letzten Jahr nicht besuchen konnten. Nur ein Sänger hat
alle 34 Singstunden besucht:
"Walter Adam".
Nachdem alles besprochen war
und der neue Vorstand war gegründet, kamen wir zum Thema des
"Wohl und Besten" des Chores.
Auch hier konnten wir zahlreiche
Angelegenheiten besprechen.
Zum leiblichen Wohl hat uns
unser wiedergewählter Präsident
Dieter mit Filet Mignon Steak Sandwiches, zubereitet vom Manager
des DC, Ewald, überrascht. Das
war ein besonderer Genuss, es hat
fabelhaft geschmeckt. Herzlichen
Dank, Dieter.
Wir vom Sänger Chor schauen
mit voller Zuversicht in das neue
Jahr. Wir hoffen, Sie alle bei unserem gemeinsamen Konzert im Mai
begrüssen zu können. Natürlich
könnten wir Sie, meine Herren, als
Sänger bei uns gebrauchen, um
unsere Lücken zu füllen und um
das Chorsingen zu erhalten.
"Kommt und singt mit uns".
Wir danken dem Deutschen
Club, dass wir ihn unser Hauptquartier nennen dürfen.
Ihnen wünschen wir beste Gesundheit, ein glückliches und erfolgreiches Jahr 2013 und verbleiben mit den besten "Neujahrs"Grüssen.
