Estamos diante do Capitólio Nacional — sede do Congresso, do Área ampliada ogota is not the same anymore. After suffering from the violence of guerilla warfare and drug trafficking for decades, the Colombian capital has undergone a renovation that has transformed it into a charming, clean, lively and much safer metropolis. Recently, the city has even taken on its touristic vocation. With a year-round agreeable climate — an annual average 65-degree temperature —, the city boasts attractions that can fill at least three or four days of interesting tours, with prices that fit Brazilian pockets (a good dinner, for example, is less expensive than in São Paulo). Furthermore, the 2,600-meter altitude does not cause any inconvenience, there is a lot of green everywhere, and the people offer a warm welcome, as one can see at the PITs (tourist information posts), which offer free city tours of up to 4 hours. A cradle that witnessed the birth of little Santa Fé de Bogotá in 1538, the historic district of Candelária is the starting point to get acquainted with the new real life of Bogota’s center. The toughened police watching at Plaza Bolívar explains how criminality has been suffocated and reminds us that it is VE ZU EL A B I A BOGOTÁ Ô C O L M "ENTRE AS ATRAÇÕES, UMA IGREJA DE SAL, CAFÉS DELICIOSOS, CARROS DANDO LUGAR A ARTISTAS DE RUA E UM TELEFÉRICO nO CENTRO" Among the attractions, a Salt Church, delightful cafes, cars giving way to street artists and a cable car in the center Palácio da Justiça, do prédio da prefeitura e, no quarteirão de trás, da Casa de Nariño, onde mora e despacha o presidente. Ele foi responsável pela predominância desse b og ota where the nation’s government is concentrated. We are before the National Capitol — the headquarters of the Congress, Justice Courts, the city hall building and, in the block behind, the Nariño House, where the president resides and has his office. It is believed that Bogota’s inaugural mass was prayed at the next-door Catedral Primada, although some historians argue that everything started in the nearby enchanting little square, Plazoleta Chorro Quevedo. With a chapel and cozy cafes, it brings together local students and foreign backpackers lodged in nearby hostels. Some of Bogota’s 58 museums and 62 art galleries are among these 17th and 18th century mansions. This is the case of Botero Museum (www.lablaa.org/museos-y-colecciones/museobotero), which houses the personal collection of the Medellin artist, and the Del Oro Museum (www.banrep.gov.co/museo), with more than 30 thousand artifacts produced before Christopher Colombo arrived in America. Not far away, shows and exhibitions liven up the Gabriel García Márquez Cultural Center (www. fce.com.co). Muita gente passeia de bicicleta, um veículo em alta em 54 b og ota Rogelio Salmona (1929-2007), who is to Colombia what Oscar Niemeyer is to Brazil. He was responsible for the predominance of this style, also present at Plaza de Toros de Santamaría, in the Macarena district, which hosts bullfights in January. The small-brick buildings can be observed from the belvederes of Cerro Montserrate (www.cerromontserrate.com). Only a mile from the slopes of Candelária, the white church of Montserrate shines at the top of this part of the Andes which outines the city’s east. Just take the cable car or funicular to have a panoramic view of this metropolitan region of 8 million people. From the top, it is easy to see the taxis, yellow as in New York, winding their way through the numbered streets and avenues. You can also clearly see the biarticulated buses’ corridors of Transmilenio, a transport system inspired by that of Brazilian Curitiba. It tries to minimize the effects of trancón, a traffic system that is tougher than the number plate restriction policy carried out in the Brazilian city of São Paulo. In Bogota, every car is forbidden to ride two days of the week, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Another action encourages the population to leave their cars in the garage and, as a plus, to value the lovely commercial center at night. On Fridays, various blocks are closed to automobiles on 7th Avenue, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.. During the so-called Septimazo, theater and music artists mix with street food and trinket vendors. Desde o ano passado, a casa de Andrés Jaramillo (leia seu perfil nas próximas páginas) tem uma filial, o Andrés D.C., na badalada Zona Rosa de Bogotá, rare movement in the city center at such time, shop owners extend their closing hour from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.. Many people ride a bicycle, a vehicle much in demand in Bogota. In addition to a permanent 300-kilometer bicycle pathway called CicloRuta, the city expands this figure with 122 kilometers of exclusive pathways on Sundays, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.. In addition to having full theaters and cinemas, Sunday is also a day for handicraft and typical food fairs. The district of Usaquén, in the North Zone, feels like a countryside village with streets full of stalls — besides 22 bars and 70 restaurants for late lunches. Many people, however, leave the city to eat, tour around or practice sports like golf — some of the 29 golf courses of Bogota are in the city’s outskirts (Colombia has over 50 courses). “Business travelers take their time to get acquainted with our good courses, which are well kept and green the whole year,” says coach Roberto Herrera, proudly. Another option is going to Catedral de Sal, in Zipaquirá, 50 kilometers from Bogota. The tunnels of the mine excavated until 1995, 180 meters down, were transformed into places of prayer. However, no day trip is as indispensable as the one to Chía, 40 minutes from Bogota’s center. It is where you’ll find Andrés Carne de Rés, a mix of restaurant and nightclub where you might see all kinds of people, from singer and national muse Shakira, enjoying herself with friends, to foreign executives in meetings and families partying. 56 b og ota Andrés Jaramillo (read his profile in the following pages) opened a branch, Andrés D. C., in Bogota’s thriving Zona Rosa, also called T Zone. In addition to housing 70 restaurants — like the five houses of award-winning chef Harry Sasson, the area concentrates big shopping centers and luxury label shops, like Chanel. Two shops attract foreigners: Arturo Calle, selling quality suits starting at 220 reais, and Diesel, which has a plant in Colombia. Brazil, which sent nearly 50 thousand tourists to Colombia in 2009, is majority when it comes to the foreigners buying jeans there for prices starting at 200 reais. The North region of Bogota, where Zona Rosa is located, concentrates the main hotels for executives and other two well-structured areas with food and entertainment: in the financial heart of the G Zone, there are about 30 restaurants, and around Parque 93 there are other 40 — where it is possible to go from dinner to a bar, a nightclub, a casino or a cafe. In addition to counting on a shop from the Juan Valdez chain, a kind of Starbucks specialized in premium Colombian coffee, the park lists a dozen nightclubs to “rumbear” — as the Colombians say “go out dancing.” Most of the rumba houses go with Latino rhythms, including salsa, reggaeton, cumbia and vallenato. As the government found that the violence rate dropped substantially with nightlife ending earlier, houses close at 3 a.m.. No problem. It is enough time to see that Bogota is just great or, as the locals say, muy chévere.
