Mayor’s message
Ballarat looks forward to welcoming thousands of the world’s best rowers to
our great city in October 2014 for the World Rowing Masters Regatta.
It is with much excitement that Ballarat will once again play host to an
international event of this calibre. Ballarat is a city with a long and proud
history of sporting excellence. Our city has hosted a range of sporting
events including the 1956 Olympic Games rowing, kayaking and canoeing
events.
With a wide range of first class facilities, attractions and accommodation
options right here on our doorstep, we know you are going to have a
wonderful time in our city.
Whilst here we encourage you to take the time to stay, play and enjoy all
that Ballarat has to offer.

Ballarat, the largest city of Victoria’s goldfields region, is proud to be the home of the
upcoming 2014 World Rowing Masters Regatta.
Host venue Lake Wendouree has been the scene of some of Australia’s golden rowing
moments including the 1956 Melbourne Olympics rowing regatta, various Kings Cup,
Victorian Rowing Championships, National Rowing Regattas, 2002 World Masters
Games Rowing and 2012 Australian Masters Rowing Championships.
What better place for the friendly festival atmosphere and top international
competition that makes the World Rowing Masters Regatta so popular.
As well as being a sport hub, Ballarat is a city renowned for its gold-rush history,
arts precincts, cultural and theatre events and wonderful tourist attractions.
From Ballarat, competitors and fans alike can easily tour our coastal towns, sample fine

Message from The Chair of the FISA Masters Rowing
Commission
As the Chair of the FISA Masters Commission it is a great pleasure to welcome master
rowers from all over the world to Lake Wendouree in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia for the
40th World Rowing Masters Regatta.
The course has hosted many big events through the years, including most notably the
1956 Olympic Regatta. We have been working closely with Rowing Victoria for several
years, and with the great support of Rowing Australia and the City of Ballarat, we feel
confident that this will be a well-run regatta with large and enthusiastic participation.
Meeting new and old friends and enjoying our wonderful sport together, both in and
out of competition, is the hallmark of every World Rowing Masters Regatta. Australia has
a special place in the heart of many rowers and this is a great opportunity for overseas
rowers to enjoy rowing and visit the country which has so many attractions to all of us.
The 2014 regatta, together with the famous Australian hospitality, will be a continuation
of this happy tradition and will afford a memorable experience for new master rowers
as well as the more experienced ones.
For the rowers coming from Australia, the regatta will be an opportunity to show your
rowing friends the highest level of competition drawn from the long history of rowing
here. Australian rowing is one of the most successful sports internationally and the 2014
World Rowing Masters Regatta will demonstrate that master rowers are as dedicated
and as enthusiastic as elite level rowers.
We can expect 4 days of intensive racing on a high level – come and join us and bring
friends and family.

Wie der Vorsitzende der FISA Masters Kommission ist es eine große Freude, Master
Ruderer aus der ganzen Welt begrüßen zu Lake Wendouree in Ballarat, Victoria,
Australien für den 40. FISA Masters Regatta.
Der Kurs hat viele große Ereignisse im Laufe der Jahre, darunter vor allem von 1956
Olympic Regatta veranstaltet. Wir haben eng mit Rudern Victoria für mehrere Jahre,
und mit der großen Unterstützung der Rowing Australia und der Stadt Ballarat, sind
wir davon überzeugt, dass dies ein gut geführtes Regatta mit großen und begeisterte
Teilnahme sein.
Treffen alte und neue Freunde und genießen unsere wunderbaren Sport zusammen,
sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb des Wettbewerbs, ist das Markenzeichen eines
jeden FISA Masters Regatta. Australien hat einen besonderen Platz in den Herzen vieler

sowie die erfahrenen diejenigen leisten können.
Für die Ruderer aus Australien, wird die Regatta eine Gelegenheit zu zeigen, Ihre
Freunde Rudern das höchste Niveau der Konkurrenz aus der langen Geschichte des
Ruderns hier gezogen werden. Australian Rudern ist eine der erfolgreichsten Sport
international und die WM 2014 Rowing Masters Regatta wird zeigen, dass MasterRuderer werden als engagiert und so begeistert wie Elite-Niveau Ruderer.

The course, facilities and amenities are all undergoing a substantial facelift
and athletes can look forward to exciting competition in a historic venue
which is also central to many local attractions.
Catching up with old rowing friends and making new ones is always a major
feature of National and International rowing events and your organising
Committee is working hard to ensure both the on and off water facilities for
this event will be second to none.
We sincerely hope whether you are coming from overseas, interstate or

wesentliche Facelift und Athleten freuen sich auf spannende Wettkämpfe in
einem historischen Ort, die auch zentral zu vielen lokalen Attraktionen.
Aufholjagd mit alten Freunden Rudern und neu zu knüpfen ist immer ein
wichtiges Merkmal von nationalen und internationalen Veranstaltungen und
Rudern Ihre Organisationskomitee arbeitet hart, um sicherzustellen, sowohl
die Wasser-und Ausschalten Einrichtungen für diese Veranstaltung werden die
ihresgleichen sucht.
Wir hoffen aufrichtig, ob Sie aus dem Ausland, zwischenstaatlichen oder lokal
kommen, dass man uns für einige große Konkurrenz und Kameradschaft für
das, was ich bin mir sicher, wird sich ein sehr angenehmer 4 Tage kommen.

Lake Wendouree, the heart of Ballarat
The picturesque Lake Wendouree lies in the heart of Ballarat
and has been a hub of social and sporting activities for
more than 150 years. The name ‘Wendouree’ comes from
the Indigenous word wendaaree, which means ‘go away’.
The tale goes that when early European settlers asked a
local Indigenous woman the name of the swamp, this was
her reply. Soon after, the swamp was transformed into a
recreational lake and the misunderstood word became its
official name.
Ballarat’s long and proud association with rowing dates back
to the first course being cut through Lake Wendouree in 1864,
with steamboats, ferries, yachts and rowing boats in tow to
mark the special occasion.
In 1956, the Summer Olympic Games rowing, kayaking and
canoeing events were held on Lake Wendouree, cementing
Ballarat’s reputation for hosting world class events.

In 1992, local marathon runner and Olympian, Steve
Moneghetti, set the record for a ‘lap around the lake’ at
16 minutes 10 seconds. Today, Steve is joined on his early
morning runs, by the thousands of walking, cycling and
running enthusiasts who greet the day with a lap around the
6km track, while enjoying the splash of oars that carry across
the still waters of Lake Wendouree.
Situated on the western side of Lake Wendouree is Ballarat’s
Botanical Gardens. A wander through the gardens offers a
unique look at Australia’s political history featuring bronze
sculptures of Australia Prime Ministers and the Australian ExPrisoner of War Memorial.
In recent years the City of Ballarat has invested greatly in
the development of Lake Wendouree, ensuring the venue is
maintained as a world class precinct.

Lake Wendouree, das Herz von Ballarat

HOW TO GET THERE / ANREISE
Ballarat is well serviced by air, rail and road. Victoria’s
two largest airports are within an hour’s drive to Ballarat
and a regular shuttle service runs from Melbourne’s airport
(Tullamarine) to Ballarat. A dedicated fast train service
means rail travel from the centre of Melbourne to the heart
of Ballarat takes just over an hour. Ballarat sits on the junction
of three of the state’s major freeways and is very well
serviced by a public bus and taxi services with car hire readily
available.
