Vor knapp einem Jahr feierte eine absolute Legende
im Bereich harter, dunkler Electro-Musik ihre fulminante Rückkehr: Vomito Negro! Nun legen die Belgier
um Gin Devo mit dem Minialbum „Slave Nation“ nach
- sechs neue Stücke: dunkel, kompromisslos, innovativ. „Ich habe Vomito Negro 1982/83 gegründet.
Damals gab es noch keine elektronischen Musikinstrumente mit vorgegebenen Presets, man musste
sich alle Sounds mit Wellenformen, Filtern und einfachen Sequencern selbst bauen. Ich arbeite immer
noch so und verzichte komplett auf Presets. Es ist
schade, dass sich 90% aller Bands nur auf bereits
vorhandene Klänge stützen und folglich auch alle
gleich klingen. Es verhindert eine weitere Evolution
im Electro-Bereich. Ich weiß nicht, ob die Leute zu
faul sind oder einfach keinen Mut besitzen, aber auf
jeden Fall ist es traurig“, erklärt Gin. Nach dem letzten Album war Gin auf einem kreativen Höhenflug,
der auch auf „Slave Nation“ zu spüren ist: „Wenn ich
einmal am Arbeiten bin, bastele ich oft wochenlang
an Rhythmen und Sounds und archiviere diese dann.
Ein paar Monate später habe ich mich wieder an das
Material herangesetzt, es sortiert und mir Gedanken
gemacht, wo, wie und wann ich es verwenden will.
Außerdem habe ich mich zum ersten Mal seit meiner
Schulzeit wieder an Videokunst versucht. Ich habe
Clips zu ‚Dance With Death‘ und ‚Chateau des Amerois‘ gebastelt und die Resonanz war so gut, dass ich
angefixt war. Also folgte ein Video zu ‚TV-Man‘ und
noch mehr, was ihr demnächst auf der Videoleinwand
auf unseren Konzerten verfolgen könnt. Es gibt kein
Entkommen!“ Die Intensität der neuen Stücke lässt
vermuten, dass Vomito Negro mit „Slave Nation“
durchaus ein konkretes Land meinen. Gin nickt: „Es
ist doch eigentlich klar, dass wir nur die USA meinen
können. Dieses Land ist komplett paranoid in seiner
Angst vor Terrorismus und war und ist direkt oder
indirekt für so ziemlich alle Kriege nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verantwortlich. Krieg ist Geld, also
wächst die US-Kriegsmaschinerie jedes Jahr. Und da
Aggression Gegengewalt erzeugt, werden auch die
europäischen Ländern immer mehr
zu Überwachungsstaaten, von der
US-amerikanischen Paranoia getrieben. Das erinnert an ‚1984‘ - wir
sind auf dem Weg in die Sklaverei.“
Ein neues Album und eine Tour sind
für 2011 ebenfalls in Planung, wie
Gin zum Besten gibt: „Ich werde
versuchen, dieses Jahr so viel live
zu spielen, wie möglich. Hoffentlich
sehen wir uns auf den Festivals im
Sommer. Ich werde außerdem das
neue Album fertigstellen, das ebenfalls noch dieses Jahr erscheinen soll
und arbeite nebenbei noch an weiteren Videos zu ‚Slave Nation‘, sowie
dem ersten Gin Devo Soloalbum mit
abgedrehter, dunkler ElektronikMusik.“ Man darf sich also noch auf
Einiges freuen.
Roughly one year ago, an absolute legend in the realm
of dark, hard Electro-sounds celebrated its triumphant
return: Vomito Negro! Now, the Belgian band fronted
by Gin Devo is back with a brand-new mini album
titled “Slave Nation” - six tracks of dark, uncompromising electronic innovation. “I formed Vomito Negro
back in 1982/83 when none of the available electronic
equipment had preset data, which meant that we had
to build all our sounds from scratch, using wave forms,
envelopes, LFOs and simple sequencers. I’m still working that way and creating all my own sounds instead
of using prefab presets. Nowadays, 90% of the bands
just use presets or the same VST plugins, thus ending
up with the same sounds as everybody else. There is
not much evolution, this way, it is a shame”, Gin explains. After recording the last album, Gin was on a creative high that is still very prevalent on “Slave Nation”:
“When there is a lot of inspiration, we tend to work day
and night on sounds, sequences and drum patterns.
We then archive everything and forget about it for a
while. A few months later, we return to the material
and sort everything out. I also started working on video
art again, the first time after being out of high school.
The feedback on the clips I did for ‘Dance With Death’
and ‘Chateau des Amerois’ was so good that I’ve really
been bitten by the video bug and ‘TV-Man’ got some
visuals, too. Hence, I created Vomito Negro’s brandnew video wall which you will experience on our next
concerts. There’s no escape!” “Slave Nation” is directed
at a real nation, of course. Gin nods: “Everybody knows
that the nation can only be the United States of America. This country is flipping out on terrorism paranoia
and has been directly or indirectly
responsible for virtually every war
after WWII. War is money, so the
US war machinery grows every
year. And when you are an aggressor, you can expect counter
action, hence our European governments start turning into surveillance
states, driven by US paranoia. It’s
becoming like in ‘1984’!” But Gin
also has some bright news for the
near future: “We hope to play lots
of concerts - hope to see you at the
summer festivals. I am also working
on a Gin Devo solo album sporting
some crazy Dark Electro tracks and
on some video art for ‘Slave Nation’,
as well. Later on in 2011, there will
also definitely be a full, new Vomito
Negro album!”
