At times traffic control was slow and at other times very very hectic, especially on Easter morning when the mass schedule was “doubled”: at 9:30 – 11- 12:30. As usual, things did not always go as planned, but thanks to the following Knights, everything eventually flowed in and out: John Kestel, Larry Torres, Joe Ponce, Leonard Gonzales, Tom Puerling, Tom Cordeiro, Jack Turney, Hal Thompson, Bill McNamara, Frank Castelo, Robert Clarke, Earl Pugh, Ralph Wengler, Frank Donohue, Bill Finck, James Wasil, Robert Znovena, Paul Coyne, John Peyton and Al Mecklenburg. Special thanks to Hal, Larry and Ralph for doing multiple services. Charity – Working with God to help others May 2001, Knightline 5300, Page 2 Program Director Report Charity – Working with God to help others By Michael Donovan, Deputy Grand Knight With two months left in this Columbian year, it is time to start looking at who will be involved in running the various programs and activities during Columbian year which starts on July 1st. If you are interested in being a Program Director for one of the Service Programs give me a call at 967-9506 or Brian Klinge at 967-4753. Because there will be mentors to help each Director, you do not need experience. There are seven programs that require Directors. These are Church, Community, Council, Family, Youth, Pro-life and Membership. The Council also needs volunteers to chair the various events the Knights host. When you see an event, which interests you, please call one of the Directors to offer your services. MAY 2 3 6 7 13 14 18 27 28 Wed. Thurs. Sun. Mon. Sun. Mon. Fri. Sun. Mon. Monsignor Stephen N. Downes Easter joy and celebration continue throughout the month of May. The resurrection of Jesus is so important, so central to our faith and lives as Christians that ht e Church rejoices with “Alleluias” and festive Easter songs and prayers for the fifty days from Easter to Pentecost Sunday(June 3rd this year). Death and darkness seemed to triumph on Good Friday but the glorious resurrection of Jesus at Easter(and so his triumph once and for all over death) breaks through all the limits and barriers of human life and opens new vistas of glory and life eternal with the Risen Jesus. Our Easter celebration is especially important for us this year because of the death of so many of our Knights and family members in recent weeks. More than ever we need to hear the words spoken to the two disciples returning to the gathering of the firs disciples in Jerusalem: “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”(Luke 24:34). We also rejoice with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, rejoicing in the resurrection of Jesus, her belo ved Son. Our traditional prayer of the “Angelus” at 6:00 am, 12 noon and 6:00 pm is replaced with the Easter prayer of “Regina Caeli, laetare” during these days of the Easter Please turn to Page 7 May 2001, Knightline 5300, Page 3 CHANCELLOR’ S REPORT Brian Klinge, Chancellor. 20 April 2001 The Council is saddened to hear of the death of our brother Pablo Herrera Jr. on April 21st. Brother David Ormond of Council 1684 passed away on the same day. We will miss them, may the perpetual light shine upon them and grant them peace as they go to be with the Lord. Please remember the Herrera and Ormond families in pray. We thank GOD for the recovery of Brother Tom Cordero’s sister. What GREAT NEWS this is!! For Our Sick For all who are sick, those we have promised to pray for among our family and friends and those who are sick within our Council. Let us continue to pray for: Hattie Darga, Jill Lowery, Richard Ronquillo, Judy Klinge, Anita Pullenz, Mike Ponce, Eleanor R ichards, Alma Smith, Wanda Szuwalski, Roxanne Taylor, Otilia Tena, Ellen Velasco and Jim Wasil’s wife and family members. Pray for Jack Stampe recovering from surgery. We shall continue to pray for the recovery of Brother Fred Cota. Further, we were asked to pray and remember Deacon Wayne’s niece. We also continue to pray for PGK Felix Sanchez’s friend; Manual Jimenez; Brother Cahill’s son, Tom; Brother Larry Torres, Lisa Ann Heroldsheimer; Marcus Haroldsheimer. For all of the above and those in distress that we do not know about, remember them and those caring for them in your prayers. MAY MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR’S REPORT May 2001, Knightline 5300, Page 4 A Pro-life Message By Paul Curzan Here it is May and the Columbian year is rapidly drawing to a close. The state convention takes place in San Diego May 18 and 19. We have one more opportunity to meet our membership goal. Many members have recommended potential candidates. In contacting these individuals the response was often given as “not now” or “a little later”. Let’s all make a concerted effort to encourage these individuals to join now. Let’s support GK Frank Castelo and sign up five or ten of these interested but uncommitted candidates and have a First Degree before the convention. Since the beginning of the year, Our Lord has called PGK Dick Mohr, Frank Grant, Sal DeAlba and PGK Pablo Herrera, to their reward. I challenge all brothers to sponsor a candidate in honor of these deceased members. As of April 1 we have added fifteen new and re-admitted members. With your help we can add to this total. Call me if you need help in talking to potential candidates, Bernie Jochum 9671709. JOHN KESTEL ADVANCED TO SECOND DEGREE AT VENTURA Written by Tom Cordero John made his second degree with a class of 38 candidates in an impressive initiation held on 25 April. Of the 38 candidates, 35 (I believe) were from Council 12805, Our Lady Mary, Star of the Sea of Port Hueneme, Oxnard which was chartered in October of 2000 and has a membership of just over 60. Vic Mercado is the Grand Knight. Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Is Unethical A decision to federally fund research involving the destruction of human embryos would be profoundly disturbing even if this research could result in great scientific and medical gain. The prospect of government-sponsored experiments to manipulate and destroy human embryos should make us all lie awake at night. That some individuals would be destroyed in the name of medical science constitutes a threat to us all. Recent statements claiming that human embryonic stem cell rese arch is too promising to be slowed or prohibited underscore the sort of utopianism that could blind us to the truth of what we are doing and the harm we could cause to ourselves and others. Human embryos are not mere biological tissues or clusters of cells; they are the tiniest of human beings. Thus, we have a moral responsibility not to deliberately harm them. An international scientific consensus now recognizes that human embryos are biologically human beings beginning at fertilization and acknowledges the physical continuity of human rowth g and development from the one-cell stage forward. In the 1970s and 1980s, some frog and mouse embryologists referred to the human embryo in its first week or two of developme nt as a "pre-embryo," claiming that it deserved less respect than embryos in later stages fo development. However, some embryology textbooks now openly refer to the term "pre-embryo" as a scientifically invalid and "inaccurate" term which has been "discarded," and others which once used the term Please Turn to Page 9 May 2001, Knightline 5300, Page 5 Ed and Janet Page Named Family of the Month Written by Frank Castelo Grand Knight Ed and Janet came to Goleta in 1970 from Yuma, Arizona. They have three children, a son Mel, and a daughter Jean, who live in Santa Barbara, and a daughter Ann who lives in Oxnard. The Page’s have been married forty three years. Janet enjoys bowling, and Ed likes reading and hiking. They both enjoy spending time with the grandkids. Ed was in the U.S. Army for twenty-two years, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He served in Korea, Vietnam, and Pakistan. He practiced dentistry three years in Chicago before entering the Army. Ed joined our council in August of 1995, He has held the positions of Recorder, and Chancellor, and is presently the Faithful Navigator of our Fourth Degree Assembly. Ed is frequently seen at functions involving the color guard, and looks real sharp in his regalia. Ed and Janet are both very helpful at various events by helping in the kitchen, serving, and set-up/decorating. You can always count on Janet to help with ticket sales. Her smile and sense of humor keeps everyone on their toes, and she is the life of the party whenever we go on bus trips like the one to Laughlin, which we went to recently. Congratulations Ed and Janet, You are great examples as the Family of the Month. John Sternot Named Knight of the Month Written by Frank Castelo Grand Knight I chose John Sternot for Knight of the Month because of his long -standing participation, and support to our Council since 1976 when he joined us during Ralph Wengler’s term as Grand Knight. John was born on October 12, 1912 in Ra pids, Wisconsin. He married Mildred in 1936 and they have one daughter, Dolores who was also born in Rapids and is often involved in Church events and runs the cake walk during our Parish Picnic. John was a truck driver before he retired. John has served as a guard for our Council on several occasions, as well as flag bearer on a number of exemplification teams over the years, and is often around during various events such as the MR Drive, parking assistance, coke booth , etc, lending a helping hand. John has been an Usher at Saint Raphael’s Church about 25 years and a bell ringer for about 20 years. His Hobbies and interests are hunting, fishing, bowling and dancing. He and Mildred won third place in Rapids for the Waltz and First Place for the Polka. Whenever we have a dance you can be sure to find them having a good time on the dance floor. Thank you John for your fine example of loyalty and ch eerful support to the Knights. May 2001, Knightline 5300, Page 6 Council Directors Report By Terry Sliger Insurance For Life! This month’s dinner included a Sun-dried tomato Caesar salad, Dijon-la’orange chicken, parsley potatoes, baby carrots and chocolate-drizzled custard filled cream puff for dessert. Prepared by our culinary pros Paul ‘Chez Paul’ Coyne, Tom ‘El Cordeiro de Goleta’ Cordeiro and Michael ‘FGK’ Donovan, the dinner certainly lived up to its 23.95 price tag. The dinners were swiftly served by a wonderful group of ladies; Patricia Cordeiro, Evelina Curzan and Denise Sliger. The dessert, prepared by Denise Sliger, was quite a hit. The Celebrant of the Stations of the Cross Ceremony was Sir Knight Deacon Nicholas Curran of Junipero Serra Assembly. Ten Color Corps Sir Knights under the direction of Color Corps Commander Paul Coyne were present. This Ceremony is an annual event sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 1684. It is a magnificent event and was attended by Councils 1684, Council 5300, Junipero Serra Assembly, wives, friends and other members. The 2000-2001 year encompassed the observance and end of the year long 100th anniversary celebration of the Fourth Degree. One of the major goals of this historic celebration was to see that our Fourth Degree adds new members to its rank to ensure its growth and strength. The driving force behind our more than 250,000 members is the love they hold for their nation. The Sir Knights stand as a force dedicated to the service of the Church, the countries in which we are present, and he t Knights of Columbus. As this fraternal year draws to a close we extend the opportunity to join the Fourth Degree to all eligible Third Degree members. Through this effort we will be able to offer the occasion for qualified Third Degree Knights to reach their highest potential in the Order by becoming Sir Knights in the Fourth Degree.
