English Speaking Groups and Forums
DAV
Deutsch-Ausländer-Verbindung = German-Foreigners-Connection
This is a group of English speaking women of all nationalities that live in and
around the Neustadt area. The ladies meet on a regular basis for coffee
mornings, book club, scrabble evenings plus culture days such as wine
tasting, art galleries and city tours etc. Once a month the group meet in the
evening to discuss new ideas, plan future social activities and help each other
solve any problems and generally have a good time!
The members are a mixture of ladies living in Germany on either temporary
or permanent basis. The members do change regularly, however on average
they have approx. 40 members. There is a small yearly membership, a small
portion of which goes to charity.
www.davgermany.webs.com
Toytown Germany
Toytown Germany is an English-language community website for Germany.
It is an information resource, a meeting point, and a communication
platform for English-speakers throughout the country.
Toytown Germany, known as TT for short, collects information about local
restaurants and bars, events and meet ups, job offers, housing, cinemas,
taxes, and pretty much everything to do with moving to Germany and living
here. The heart of the site is the discussion forum where English speakers can
share news, ask questions, post answers, make advertisements, organise
sports and social events, discuss current affairs, make friends, and generally
engage with each other.
Please bear in mind that when using the discussion boards that Neustadt an
der Weinstraße lies on the border of Rheinland-Pfalz and BadenWürttemberg and so both forums are relevant.

Places of Worship
Churches
In almost all villages/towns there is a Protestant church (Protestant
churches in Neustadt: www.dekanat-nw.de) and/or a Roman Catholic church
(diocese Speyer: www.bistum-speyer.de).
The Protestant churches in Rheinland-Pfalz belong to the “Evangelische
Landeskirche der Pfalz – Protestantische Landeskirche”
(www.evkirchepfalz.de), that is a member of the EKD (Evangelische Kirche in
Deutschland – Evangelical Church in Germany).
The EKD is a federation of 22 Lutheran, Unified (Prussian Union) and
Reformed (Calvinist) Protestant regional church bodies in Germany. The EKD
is not a church in a theological understanding because of the
denominational differences. However, the member churches (Gliedkirchen)
share full pulpit and altar fellowship.
In a certain way, the member churches resemble dioceses of the Anglican or
Roman Catholic churches from an organizational point of view. However, the
member churches of the EKD are independent with their own theological and
formal organization. Most member churches are led by a (state) bishop. One
of the regional leaders is elected Council Chairman (Ratsvorsitzender) of the
EKD by the Synod and Church Conference. All regional churches of the EKD
are members of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe.
There are also Evangelical Free Churches, e.g. the New Apostolic Church
(www.nak-neustadt.de/index.php), Mennonite Churches (www.efmb-nw.de, /
www.mennoniten-branchweilerhof.de/mennos.htm).

Deutsche Bahn – German Railways
www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml respectively
www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml
These websites give very detailed information. Online booking is possible for
up to 5 persons.
Nonetheless, here are some info and tips:
Families
Children under 6 always travel for free and are not required to have a ticket.
Children from 6 up to and including 14 years can travel for free if they are
accompanied by their parents or grandparents (they must be registered on
your ticket, you can’t register them later on the train).
Children from 6 up to and including 14 years travelling on their own or with
other adults than their parents or grandparents receive a 50% discount.
Jugend BahnCard 25 (Youth Train Card)
Costs: You pay 10 € once, Jugend BahnCard 25 can be purchased for children
from 6 up to and including 18 years.
Jugend BahnCard 25 is initially issued for 3 years and can then be extended
if your child hasn’t turned 19 yet.
Your child gets a 25% discount on standard fares (in addition to the 50%
discount for children from 6 up to and including 14 years travelling on their
own) and “Sparpreise” (see below) in first class and second class.
Jugend BahnCard 25 is valid on all trains of “Deutsche Bahn” and numerous
transport associations, e.g. the VRN.
Since Jugend BahnCard 25 doesn’t have a photo your child is required to
carry a photo-ID as well.
26
Newcomers Guide
BahnCard 25
Costs: 57 €/year for tickets in second class. BahnCard 25 is valid for one year.
The contract is extended automatically for the next year, unless you cancel
the contract at least 6 weeks before expiry date.
You get a 25% discount on standard fares and “Sparpreise” in second class.
BahnCard 25 is valid on all trains of “Deutsche Bahn” and numerous
transport associations, e.g. the VRN.
Partner Card 25: 39 €/ year for spouses/partners of a BahnCard 25-holder
(no children in the same household required).
Additional Card 25: 10 €/year for spouses/partners of a BahnCard 25-holder
with children under 18 years in the same household. If there are children
from 6 up to and including 17 years in the same household, at least one child
must purchase an Additional Card 25 for
10 €/year to entitle the spouse/partner to an Additional Card 25.
Tip: for families that consider buying BahnCards for all family members:
If you have more than one child older than six years, purchase one BahnCard
25 for 57 €/year, one Additional Card 25 for the spouse/partner for 10
€/year, one Additional Card for one child from 6 up to and including 17 years
for 10 €/year, and Jugend BahnCards 25 for your other children (10 € onetime fee).
Sparpreise (Discounts)
Sparpreis 25 and Sparpreis 50 (offering 25% and 50 % off standard return
fares):
These are discounted tickets (called “Savings fares” on the American English
website and “Saver fares” on the British English website) on long-distance
travel within Germany for all customers.
Conditions that apply for both, Sparpreis 25 and Sparpreis 50: Passengers
must travel on a fixed date and time, passengers must make a return journey
to and from the same station, tickets must be purchased at least 3 days in
advance, tickets are only valid for return trips within one month.
Up to four persons (not necessarily related) can travel with you that get a
50% discount. Your own children below 15 years travel for free.
27
Newcomers Guide
In order to use Sparpreis 50, the trip must be over a weekend: The trip must
last at least until the following Sunday (or Saturday if the outward trip is on
a Sunday), or be same day travel on a Saturday or Sunday.
Please note: BahnCard 25 can be combined with the Sparpreis 25 and
Sparpreis 50 so that you can save up to 62.5% of the standard fare.
Tip: Since the holder of a Jugend BahnCard 25 is entitled to book first class
tickets as well, it is sometimes cheaper to travel first class than second class
with a group depending on the availability of tickets.
Sparpreis
A discounted ticket for all customers: tickets start from 29 € for one person in
second class one way within Germany, also available on ICE connections. For
short distances up to
250 km there are tickets from 19 € in second class for one person one way.
Two persons can travel together from 49 € in second class and up to 3
further persons may join the same trip by paying just 20 € supplement each.
BahnCard 25-holders get a 25% discount from the ticket price. Children
below 15 years accompanied by parents or grandparents travel for free.
Tickets must be purchased at least 3 days in advance.
Please note: All discounted tickets (Sparpreis 25, Sparpreis 50 and Sparpreis)
are subject to availability. The earlier you book your ticket the bigger the
chance to get the best price. You can book 92 days in advance.
Tip: In the German section of the website there is a “Sparpreis-Finder”:
http://ps.bahn.de/preissuche/preissuche/psc_start.post?
Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket / Saarland-Ticket
The ticket for up to 5 persons is valid from Monday to Friday for one day of
your choice from 9am until 3am of the following day, on Saturday, Sunday
and on bank holidays from 12am until 3am of the following day. It can be
used on all local trains (RE, RB and S-Bahn), busses and trams within
Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland for as many trips as you like within the time
limit.
Second class price:
1st person 21 €, 2nd – 5th person paying just 3 € supplement each. Children
below 15 years accompanied by parents or grandparents travel for free.
28
Newcomers Guide
There are similar tickets in the other states. Please follow this link to check
the conditions:
http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices/germany/laender-ticket.shtml
Please note: Usually a service fee is added if you buy your tickets at the
counter.
To avoid this fee book online or buy your tickets at automated ticket
machines (which have the information in English and other languages as
well).
Please keep in mind that it might take some time if you want to buy your
tickets at an automated ticket machine.
Bills are generally accepted but related to the amount of money you have to
pay. For example: A ticket that costs 8 € you can pay with a 10€-bill but not
with a 50€-bill.
Verkehrsverbund Rhein Neckar (VRN) – Rhine Neckar Transport Authority
www.vrn.de
The website is very detailed, but unfortunately entirely in German.
Here are some info and tips:
The area where the VRN operates is shown on this map:
www.vrn.de/mam/vrn/tickets/dokumente/gro__er_wabenplan.pdf
Tariff structure
The VRN network is made up of hexagonal zones (as shown on the above
mentioned map). The price of the ticket depends on the number of these
zones you wish to use. Starting with the zone of departure add up how many
zones you need to get to your destination – your destination counts as one
zone, too. (There are compounds of hexagons (“Großwabe”) in Mannheim,
Heidelberg, Ludwigshafen and Mannheim/Ludwigshafen with a slightly
different tariff structure.)
Tickets can be bought at all VRN ticket offices, at automated ticket
machines, from drivers on certain (but not all) buses and trams. Tickets are
valid in trains (RE, RB and S-Bahn), on buses and trams.
Tickets you buy from Deutsche Bahn automated ticket machines and bus
drivers are usually pre-validated tickets. Some (for example
“Mehrfahrtenkarte”, see below) you have to validate by stamping them.
There are machines on the platforms or in the buses with a slit. You insert
your ticket and the machine will validate your ticket by stamping it (time of
boarding, number of the hexagon of boarding). One-way tickets are valid for
29
Newcomers Guide
one trip in one direction, change of line or mode of transportation is allowed.
Detours or return trips are not allowed.
There are certain time limits:
Preisstufe 0-1:
60 minutes
Preisstufe 2:
90 minutes
Preisstufe 3-5:
180 minutes
Preisstufe 6 and up:
360 minutes
Stop-overs are allowed within the time limit.
One-way tickets are available for adults and children (from 6 up to and
including 14 years). Children younger than 6 years travel for free. One adult
with a valid ticket can take up to 3 children younger than 6 years for free.
BahnCard-holders can buy tickets at a reduced fare.
If you buy 5 one-way tickets at once (Mehrfahrtenkarte), there is a discount
as well.
Tip: The fare for BahnCard-holders is a better deal than 1/5 of the
“Mehrfahrtenkarte”.
Ticket 24 and Ticket 24 PLUS
Ticket 24 is valid for one person, ticket 24 PLUS is valid for up to 5 persons.
Both tickets are valid for 24 hours after validation on a week day, e.g. 11.15
am Monday to 11.15 am Tuesday. At the weekend or on public holidays both
tickets are valid even longer – from validation on Saturday until 3 am of the
next work day.
The prices of the Ticket 24 and Ticket 24 PLUS depend on how many zones
you want to travel in. Both tickets are valid for as many trips as you like
within the time limit and the number of zones you have chosen.
MAXX-Ticket
The MAXX-Ticket is an annual ticket for students and trainees. It is valid in
the entire area of the VRN in trains (RE, RB and S-Bahn), on buses, trams and
“Ruftaxi”.
The MAXX-Ticket can be ordered before the 10th of the previous month, e.g.
to be valid from August 1 the MAXX-Ticket must be ordered before July 10.
Within the first 12 months the contract can only be cancelled under certain
conditions, after 12 months the contract can be cancelled towards the end of
each month. Notice of cancellation must be sent before the 10th of the
30
Newcomers Guide
previous month, MAXX-Ticket must be returned by the 5th of the following
month.
To apply for a MAXX-Ticket you need an application form (“Bestellschein”),
that is stamped by the student’s school and a passport sized photograph
labeled with the student’s name and address on the backside. Forms can be
picked up at all VRN ticket offices, e.g. main station Neustadt.
Entdecker-Ticket (Explorer-Ticket)
Exclusively for people that moved to the VRN area or within the VRN area.
When registering at the registration office or the “Bürgerbüro” simply ask for
a voucher for the Entdecker-Ticket. Take this voucher, your ID-card and the
confirmation of registration to one of the VRN ticket offices and you can
apply for the Entdecker-Ticket that is valid in the entire area of the VRN for
the first month of your residence for a discount price of 50 €.
Wochenkarte
Valid from Monday until 12pm the following Monday. Ticket price depends
on how many zones you want to travel in.
You first need a “Kundenkarte” (= customer card) that can be picked up at all
VRN ticket offices (the main station for instance) and then the “Wertmarke”
(= coupon), the actual ticket for the chosen week, can be bought at all VRN
ticket offices, from most bus drivers and at automated ticket machines.
Monatskarte
Valid from a chosen date in one month until 12pm the same date of the
following month.
Ticket price depends on how many zones you want to travel in.
You first need a “Kundenkarte” (= customer card) that can be picked up at all
VRN ticket offices (the main station for instance) and then the “Wertmarke”
(= coupon), the actual ticket for the chosen month, can be bought at all VRN
ticket offices, from most bus drivers and at automated ticket machines.

and at weekends and on public holidays up to 4 persons can travel with you
for free.
31
