Mandinga Arts inszeniert Hieronymus Bosch
Der Londoner Künstler Charles Beauchamp ist seit 2009 in Hamburg kein Unbekannter mehr.
Auf zwei Workshops des HausDrei hat er rund Hundert Interessierte, darunter zwei Dutzend
Hamburger Kunstlehrer, mit seiner dramatisch und aus dem karibischen Karneval inspirierten
masken- und kostümbauerischen Arbeit sowie der seines Londoner Kunstvereins Mandinga
Arts bekannt gemacht, Kunst, die sich vorwiegend auf der Straße manifestiert.
Für den Sommer 2011 nun planen wir einen weiteren Kurs mit ihm. „Mandinga Arts
inszeniert Hieronymus Bosch.“ Rund 20 ältere Schüler einer noch auszuwählenden
Sekundarstufe sollen dabei in die hochentwickelte Kunst des kostümierten Straßentheaters
eingeführt werden, um am Ende bei Hamburgs neuem Internationalen Festival der
Straßenkünste STAMP am 3. und 4. September in Kostümen von Mandinga Arts aufzutreten.
Das „Stück“ wurde bereits mehrfach, u.a. beim Londoner Thames Festival und beim Karneval
in Aalborg vor abertausend begeisterten Zuschauern aufgeführt, jeweils mit örtlichen
Akteuren.
Beauchamp bietet an, eine Gruppe von Hamburger OberstufenschülerInnen dramaturgisch in
seine Inszenierung des Hieronymus Bosch-Themas „Visions of Earthly Delight“ einzuführen
(vgl. Fotos), um es danach mit ihnen in seinen Kostümen auf die Straße zu bringen. Dieser
Kurs, der auf englisch gehalten und unterstützt werden wird von einer Londoner
Choreographin, soll stattfinden vom 31.8.-2.9. unmittelbar vor dem zweiten STAMP Festival,
Hamburgs neuem Internationalen Festival der Straßenkünste.
Das “Stück”: Visions of Earthly Delight
Hieronymus Bosch is one of the most revolutionary draftsmen in the history of art, producing
some of the first autonomous sketches in Northern Europe. He produced several triptychs.
Among his most famous is The Garden of Earthly Delights, a large tiptych overflowing with
weird, beautiful and macabre details. This picture was the initial source of inspiration for
Mandinga Arts participation at The Mayor’s Thames Festival 2006, one of London’s most
innovative and appreciated street festivals today.
Alongside medieval references in some of the costumes Mandinga has designed for this event,
one can detect a strong emphasis on animals both real and imaginary, complemented by
vibrant colours and oversized props. The designs also reflect a Cuban influence owing to the
artist’s recent collaboration with artists in Santiago de Cuba.
Charles Beauchamp
British artist Charles Beauchamp trained as painter and had had regular solo exhibitions in
London. For the last 20 years together with his wife and artistic partner, Columbian Julieta
Rubio they have designed and created award-winning giant puppets, costumes, masks and
floats for carnivals, festivals, community projects and theatre. They have collaborated with
schools, circus, carnival, dance and community groups in England, Ireland, France, Italy,
Colombia, Cuba, South Africa, Denmark and China.
Their on-going exploration into creative design, and their cross-cultural collaboration with
other artists, musicians and choreographers, has given them many opportunities to develop
their artistic vision and to extend the boundaries of carnival art. Their studios, based in South
London, are also used at regular intervals for community art workshops.
Mandinga Arts
Mandinga Arts was set up in 2002 by Beauchamp and Rubio in response to a clear need for
artists to work together on performance opportunities - to practice, improve, educate, share
and promote carnival arts. The company exists to bring together live music, carnival costume
design and dance, drawing on diverse influences from Europe, Latin America and Africa,
with community based contributions to the carnival movement in the UK.
Mandinga Arts operates an open door policy, inviting any person with an interest in carnival
art to share in the process and to participate in annual festivals and carnivals such as Notting
Hill Carnival, The Mayor's Thames Festival, El Carnaval del Pueblo and other local and
