Für uns, die wir im nördlichen Teil der Erde leben, werden die
nächsten Monate eine harte Sache werden. Das lässt sich in
wenige Worte fassen: Herbst, Winter; wenig Sonne, viel Kälte,
Schnee und Regen. Kein Wunder, dass da so mancher nach einer Exit-Strategie sucht. Wir können das niemandem verübeln.
Im Gegenteil: Wir wollen mit Rat und Tat zur Seite stehen.
Unsere Empfehlung lautet: Dominikanische Republik, die durchschnittliche Höchsttemperatur im Jänner liegt bei 29 Grad Celsius, die durchschnittliche Wassertemperatur bei 25 Grad Celsius, Lauda Air fliegt einmal pro Woche nonstop ab Wien.
Die Dominikanische Republik also. Den schlechten Ruf als Ballermann der Karibik ist sie längst los. Jetzt punktet sie mit schicken Hotels, den schönsten Stränden, die man sich vorstellen
kann, ausgezeichneten Golfplätzen, wunderbaren Naturparks,
erstklassigen Restaurants, atemberaubenden Tauchrevieren,
herausfordernden Sport- und Abenteuererlebnissen und natürlich auch sehenswerten historischen Städtchen.

For those of us who live in the northern part of the earth the
next few months are going to be a challenge. The concept can
be expressed in just a few words: autumn, winter, little sun,
bone-chilling cold, rain and snow. It is not surprising that a lot
of people feel the need for an exit strategy. We do not want to hold
this against anyone. Far from it: we want to help you in word and
deed.
We recommend: the Dominican Republic. The average high
temperature in January is 29 degrees Celcius, the average water
temperature 25 degrees, and Lauda Air takes you there non-stop
once a week.
We repeat: the Dominican Republic. Its unsavoury reputation as
the cut-rate party island in the Caribbean has long since been shed.
The island now has chic hotels, the most beautiful beaches imaginable, excellent golf courses, breathtakingly beautiful snorkelling
and diving grounds, challenging sport activities and exciting
adventures, not to mention historical towns well worth seeing.

Alles der Reihe nach: Nicht ohne Grund ist Punta Cana schon
seit etlichen Jahren eine der beliebtesten Tropendestinationen
der Welt. Und hat in jüngster Zeit mit spektakulären Hotel-Neueröffnungen weiter auf sich aufmerksam gemacht. Neue Resorts
wie die Tortuga Bay Villas, das Agua Resort and Spa oder das
Sanctuary Cap Cana bei Punta Cana sowie die Casa Colonial
bei Puerto Plata haben der Insel einen deutlichen Touch of Style
gegeben.
Aber auch all jene, die eher einen gemütlichen und entspannten
Familienurlaub verbringen wollen, können sich über schöne
neue Resorts freuen. Und für die richtige Urlaubsstimmung sorgt
ohnehin die Natur, die die Insel mehr als verwöhnt hat: kilometerlange, hellgelbe Sandstrände, sauberes Meer zum Schwimmen,
Schnorcheln und Tauchen und im Hinterland zahllose Möglichkeiten zum Mountainbiken, Wandern und Hiken. Ist das noch
nicht genug? Kein Problem, es geht auch heftiger. Wie wäre es

provided by the marvellous natural beauty with which the island is
so amply endowed: mile long, powdery beaches, clean Caribbean
water to swim, snorkel, and dive in, and a back country with
innumerable opportunities for mountain biking, walking and hiking.
Still not enough? No problem, there’s much, much more. How
about cliff jumping, rafting, diving from the top of a waterfall or

serfalls, Kanutouren durch wilde Bäche? Das alles kann man im
Dschungel der Dominikanischen Republik unternehmen.
Wer mal Abwechslung von Strandleben und sportlicher Action
sucht, findet sie bei einer Tour ins Landesinnere, wo er in Naturparks wie dem Parque National Isla Cabritos oder dem Parque
Nacional Los Haitises eine tolle Tierwelt findet – von Flamingos
bis Krokodilen.
Zu den sehenswerten historischen Städten zählt vor allem die
Inselhauptstadt Santo Domingo mit ihrer Zona Colonial, in der
Häuser, Kirchen und Museen im Kolonialstil zu finden sind. Die
sind so wertvoll, dass die Unesco sie auf ihre Weltkulturerbeliste gesetzt hat. Und auf eine eindrucksvolle Geschichte können die Dominikanische Republik und Hispaniola, die Insel, deren östliche Hälfte sie bildet, tatsächlich verweisen. Immerhin
hat hier 1492 Christoph Kolumbus sozusagen erstmals amerikanischen Boden betreten. Was sie zur ersten „europäischen
Siedlung in der Neuen Welt“ macht. Also: Nichts wie hin! ||

jungles of the Dominican Republic.
As a diversion from beach life and sport activities the interior
of the island beckons. There is the opportunity to take tours to the
nature conservancies such as the Parque National Isla Cabritzos
or the Parque Nacional Los Haitises and to experience their animal
world – ranging from flamingoes to crocodiles.
Among the most interesting historical towns is the capital of
the island, Santo Comingo with its Zona Colonial where you will
find houses, churches and museums in colonial style. They are
so valuable that UNESCO has placed them on the World
Heritage list. And the history of the Dominican Republic and
the island of Hispaniola which forms the eastern section of the
Republic is worthy of note. After all, it was in 1492 that Christopher Columbus first set foot upon American soil, granting the
Dominican Republic the distinction of being the first settlement in
the New World. ||
