ACTIVITY: Swimming CASE: GSAF 2006.05.21 DATE: Sunday May 21, 2006 LOCATION: The accident took place in the South Atlantic Ocean at Boa Viagem Beach, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. 8.1°S, 34.8°W BACKGROUND WEATHER: Scattered clouds, air temperature was 86ºF, dew point 75.2°F, humidity 70% and the wind was from the south at 8.1 mph, sea level pressure was 29.95 inches [1014 hPa], and visibility was 6.2 miles. MOON PHASE: Last Quarter, 36% of the moon was illuminated. ENVIRONMENT: Boa Viagem beach in Recife is one of the most famous urban beaches in Brazil. Boa Viagem beach is about seven kilometres in length and extends from the Pina in the north, to the beach of Piedade in the south. The beach is protected by a line of natural reefs, after which Boa Viagem beach. The dark area is a line the city was named. Carvalho went in the water while his Wilma and her son relaxed on the beach. Suddenly, they heard beachgoers cry out and saw blood where Carvalho had been moments before. Two men, Flávio Constantino Da Si and Ricardo Carneiro Leão , were the first to reach Carvalho and brought him ashore. FIRST AID: Carneiro used his shirt to stop blood loss and the surfer was transported to Hospital da Restauração by ambulance. TREATMENT: The surfer’s injuries were not considered life-threatening according to Gleison Sena of the Pernambuco State Fire Department. Hélder Correia, medical director of the hospital, concurred stating that while the patient’s life was not in danger, nor was amputation necessary, there was always the risk of infection and he was being treated with antibiotics. SPECIES: Not identified. NOTE: Carvalho was the 48th person to be bitten by a shark in Pernambuco state since 1992. Seventeen of those incidents were fatal.
