Music has transformed this musical group, a regional reference with national and international projection. The group’s most visible musical expression is the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra, protagonist of hundreds of concerts in the region, in Portugal mainland and other European countries, where we can highlight, in 2002, the recital for the Queen of England Jubilee Celebrations, Elisabeth II, in Saint George’s Chapel, Windsor. This group first started with the Associação Recreio Musical União da Mocidade in February 18th of 1913 in São Roque – Funchal. The group gathers more than twenty local musicians, being the great majority of them, young musicians who studied music in the schools of the group. The Recreio Musical owns a vast throughout the year, most of them performed at the English Church, in Funchal. In the late 1920’s, the creativity and commitment of its conductor Ernesto Serrão, who managed the group from 1924 to 1935, contributed decisively for the Orchestra’s qualitative reediting. Currently, the Orchestra is conducted by Maestro Eurico Martins. To celebrate its 99th Anniversary, the Recreio Musical União da Mocidade will be performing a concert led by the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra at the English Church, in Funchal, on the 25th of February at 9pm. 9 music / dance musical heritage and carries out more than fifty concerts music / dance Associação Amigos do Conservatório de Música da Madeira presents: February 14th – 9.30pm “Saint Valentine´s Romantic Serenade” Piano concert Dorian Leljak (Serbia) (Chopin, Rachmaninov) Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias Note: we regret to inform that the following plays are exclusively performed in Portuguese language. theatre “As Conversas da Maria Joana” February 2nd to 5th COM.TEMA Theatre Company Text: Joana Andrade February 2nd, 3rd and 4th - 9.30pm February 5th - 6.30pm Machico Forum “Shakespeare´s Anger” February 3rd and 4th – 9.30pm theatre Porventura Teatro - Madeira’s Department of Artistic Education Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias “Decent people and other high jinks” February 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th – 9.30pm February 5th and 12th – 4.30pm Theatre Group “Quando é que te calas?!” Santo António movie-theatre “Madeira, mydear” February 4th and 11th From Ernesto Leal Staging and dramaturgy: Élvio Camacho TEF Theatre Company February 4th – 8pm Casa da Cultura de Câmara de Lobos February 11th – 9pm Centro Cívico do Estreito de Câmara de Lobos Informations and reservations: Telephone: 291 226 747 | 913 035 458 www.tef.pt 10 AMO-TEATRO theatre From February 16th to 26th, the theatrical group of Casa do Povo da Camacha promotes the 3rd Edition of the Festival Amo -Teatro. The shades of the mud and rocks submerged the capital of the region, Funchal, leaving it unrecognizable, among some other cities and areas through the island, which have been devastated. The reports on the lost lives increased hour after hour. Most of the people were in fear because of their family and friends, the electricity and telephone lines were dead, making it more difficult to divulge and reach the news, and consequently, the situation became more dramatic and despairing, raising difficulties in terms of assistance to the ones in need and to all help requests. Almost two years after, the reconstruction is noteworthy, but the wounds in the people’s minds left by the destruction have no healing. To the victims, their families, friends, to the rescue teams and to all of those, who somehow have helped… this is a tribute to them… I want it to become part of our visual history, so that it may be part of everyone’s memory and collective conscience.” Excerpt of the introductory note by Octávio Passos. 14 archives and libraries Calouste Gulbenkian Municipal Library Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias Avenida Arriaga - Funchal Phone: 291 227 251 Monday to Friday: 9am to 12.30pm and from 2pm to 7pm Câmara de Lobos Municipal Library Avenida da Autonomia, 5 - Câmara de Lobos archives and libraries Phone: 291 910 130 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 10am to 6pm Wednesdays: 1pm to 6pm Documentation Centre Porta 33 Porta 33 Associação Quebra Costas Contemporary Art Centre Rua do Quebra Costas, 33 - Funchal Phone: 291 743 038 Tuesday to Saturday: 4pm to 8pm (Other schedules require advance booking) www.porta33.com European Affairs Library CERNE - “Casa da Europa na Madeira” Rua Latino Coelho, 57, 3º - Funchal Phone: 291 235 545 Monday to Friday: 9am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5.30pm Fernando Augusto Theatre-theca Theatre and Performative Art’s Library Teatro Experimental do Funchal Rua do Hospital Velho, 42 - Funchal Phone: 291 226 747 / 913 035 458 Monday to Friday: 4pm to 7pm (It requires advance booking) www.tef.pt 15 Foreign Culture’s Library Quinta Magnólia Rua Dr. Pita - Funchal Phone: 291 226 414 Monday to Friday: 9am to 5.30pm http://cultura.madeira-edu.pt Funchal’s Municipal Library Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian, 9 - Funchal Phone: 291 720 137 Monday to Friday from 10am to 7pm http://bmfunchal.blogs.sapo.pt archives and libraries John Dos Passos Library Cultural Centre John Dos Passos Rua Príncipe D.
