cultural agenda MADEIRA APRIL .08 Department of Cultural Affairs Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture “Les Misérables” Les Misérables is one of the main novels from the 19th century written by the French author Victor Hugo, also author of the «Toilers of the Sea» and «The Hunchback of Notre Dame» among other works, which tells us about the political and social situation in France, during the period of the Democratic Insurrection, on June 5th 1832 (French Revolution of 1830), through the story of Jean Valjean. In the court of Faverolles, France, Jean Valjean is sentenced to spend five years in prison for stealing bread. The penalty increases due to his repeated attempts to escape and ultimately this will make Jean Valjean spend 19 years in prison. After fulfilling his penalty, he is put on parole and has to report himself regularly, or otherwise he might be imprisoned for life. Valjean fells as an outcast every time he meets someone, because of the «yellow ticket-of-leave» he carries, which identifies him as a former prisoner. He is helped by Bishop Myriel (Bishop of Digne), but instead of showing his gratitude he steals the entire bishop’s silverware and is arrested because the pieces had the bishop’s coat of arms. When the soldiers take Valjean to the Bishop’s presence, he claims that the silverware was a gift and that Valjean had forgotten to take the candlesticks. This proof of kindness makes Valjean believe in people once again. After a few years, Valjean becomes a wealthy businessman, is appointed mayor of his adopted town and a respected man for his kindness. He will even take care of Cosette… Performed by MADS, Les Miserables goes on stage between the 17th and the 27th of April at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater. . exhibitions Until April 4th “1 Metre of Painting” Painting exhibition by Dino Gonçalves ART Forum Forum Madeira - Funchal Works made of chocolate and sugar by Carlos Valente Associarte Gallery Campanário Centrum Club Estrada Dr. Francisco Justino Gonçalves de Andrade, nº 30 Campanário Monday to Friday: 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. Saturdays: 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. www.adcampanario.pt.vu Until April 5th “Faces in time” Photo exhibition by Gilberto Garrido Casa do Povo de São Roque do Faial Monday to Friday: 9.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Until April 6th “Folklore” Photo exhibition by Gregório Cunha Casa da Cultura de Santa Cruz Quinta do Revoredo Monday to Friday: 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 O’clock and from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays: 3.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. “And all started out like this” Engraving and sculpture by Mara Alexandre Chocolarte Art Gallery Rua Conselheiro Silvestre Ribeiro, 25 Funchal Monday to Saturday: 8.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. Sundays: 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. .
