The Madeira Music Festival for 2013
takes place from 7 to 16 June. It is an
event with a fixed date on the annual
calendar of events programmed
by the Regional Secretariat
of Culture, Tourism and

classical music.
Part of the Atlantic Festival, an annual

diversified initiatives in terms of shows and
animation in the city, the Madeira Music
Festival is the most significant opportunity
for audiences, who appreciate a higher
level of musical quality within the existent
cultural offer and that, moreover, may
be appreciated in splendid buildings of
our local architectural cultural heritage.
The promotion and knowledge of
these venues, in terms of memory and

INAUGURAL CONCERT OF THE
ORGAN OF SANTA LUZIA’S CHURCH
The historic organs of the churches in
Madeira have been going through a professional
and extensive restoration and conservation
intervention project carried on by the Regional
Direction for Cultural Affairs, since 1995.
There are several historic organs that have
been restored and already introduced to the
public, in performances of the highest cultural
quality, promoting another part of existent musical
offer, as it occurs every year, in October, since 2010,
at the Madeira Organ Festival.
On June 27, 9.00pm, it is held the official public
introduction of the historic Organ of the Church of
Santa Luzia, restored by Portuguese organ-builder
and restorer, Dinarte Machado, in a concert with the
following performers: the organist, Filipe Veríssimo,
Carla Moniz, Soprano, Norberto Gomes, violin and
direction, Parandzem Khachkalyan, violin, Volodymyr
Petryakov, viola, and Gyumishyan, in the Cello.
The brand new restored organ surely enriches a
magnificent collection of already restored organs in our
Region and with may be seen and “appreciated” at the
Cathedral, Convent of Santa Clara, Hospice of Bom Jesus,
Church of Porto da Cruz, Machico, Church of Nossa Senhora
da Luz, in Ponta do Sol, Church of São João Evangelista
(Colégio Church) and the Church of São Pedro, in Funchal.

For the 8th consecutive year the Primary and Secondary
of Machico organizes the Medieval Market, this year, paying
a tribute to the Portuguese King Manuel, one of the most
fascinating figures of our history and an authentic symbol of the
a so-called Portuguese golden age.
Known by “The fortunate one”, he ruled between 1495 and
1521 and used to affirm himself as being the King of Portugal,
of the Algarves, from this side, across and beyond the sea, lord
of the navigation and conqueror of Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia and
India. It was during his reign that Vasco da Gama reached the
sea-way to India, Pedro Álvares Cabral to Brazil and Afonso de
Albuquerque conquered Goa (India), Malacca (Malaysia) and
Azamor (Morocco).
In Madeira, more precisely, in Machico, King Manuel made
significant donations to the Church: the great bell, the organ,
the marble columns of its portico-side and the image of the
Patroness, Our Lady of Conception, a silver imprint seal with
Machico’s coat of arms, the armillary sphere…
This year the Medieval Market recalls all these episodes
of the Portuguese history by inviting all of those who wish to
partake in a unique journey through the 16th century.
