Die Seychellen
Der kleine Inselstaat ist nicht nur ein wunderbares Ziel für Flitterwochen, sondern auch ein
zuverlässiger Partner Deutschlands im Indischen
Ozean.
D
ie Seychellen sind eines der kleinsten und exotischsten Länder weltweit. Ein Archipel bestehend aus
115 Inseln und 1,3 Millionen Quadratkilometern
im Indischen Ozean, der etwas größer ist als Südafrika und
sechs Mal so groß wie das Vereinigte Königreich. Die Insel ist
ein wahres Paradies, mit seltener Flora und Fauna und einer
multi-ethnischen Bevölkerung. Mehr als 230.000 Touristen
ließen sich 2014 von der Schönheit der Seychellen begeistern. Mit 35.917 Touristen steht Deutschland auf Platz 1,
noch vor Frankreich, Italien und Russland. Der Tourismus
hat aber auch seinen Preis: Die Seychellen zielen vor allem
auf den hochwertigen Tourismus-Sektor ab, um Massentourismus zu vermeiden und die Umwelt zu schützen. „Nicht
höher als eine Palme“. Das ist das Motto beim Bau neuer
Hotels, damit die einzigartige, natürliche Schönheit der Seychellen bewahrt bleibt.

Seychelles
The small island state is not
only a beautiful honeymoon
destination but also a reliable
partner for Germany in the
Indian Ocean.
Seychelles is one of the smallest and
most exotic countries in the world –
an archipelago of 115 islands and 1.3
million square km of Indian Ocean
which is slightly larger than South
Africa and six times the size of the
United Kingdom. It is a true island
paradise with rare fauna and flora
and a multi-ethnic population. More
than 230,000 tourists tried to capture Seychelles’ beauty in 2014. With
35,917 travelers, Germany finds itself
on the top of the statistics followed
by France, Italy and Russia. This does
not come cheap as the Seychelles
target the wealthy high-end segment in order to avoid mass tourism

Vorreiter beim Schutz der Umwelt, insbesondere der maritimen Umwelt des Indischen Ozeans.
Ich selbst möchte mich an dieser Stelle verabschieden. Nach zwei spannenden Jahren verlassen meine Familie und ich Kenia.

We all associate wonderful pictures with
Seychelles: beaches, coral reefs and Creole, an exotic language. But Seychelles
has to offer much more. Seychelles is
not only a great tourism destination, but
are also a reliable partner for Germany,
for instance in fighting piracy. Moreover,
the country is a pioneer in protecting the
environment, especially the maritime
environment of the Indian Ocean.
I myself would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye. After two exciting
years, my family and I are leaving Kenya.
We thank all friends of Germany and of
the German Embassy, as well as all readers of “Habari” for their interest and their

a severe financial crisis and can today showcase
political stability coupled with a robust economy
thanks to a remarkable macroeconomic reform

the Blue Economy, training courses for young
Seychellois and environment protection. Even if
Germany does not have an embassy in Victoria,
the capital of Seychelles, German tourists and
residents are taken care of by Honorary Consul
Kerstin Henri.

kann heute auf eine bemerkenswerte politische
Stabilität stolz sein, die dank umfassender makroökonomischer Reformen seit 2008 eine robuste
Wirtschaft vorzuweisen hat. Die Anpassung hatte
auch schmerzhafte Folgen für die Bevölkerung: die
Abschaffung sozialer Leistungen. Bildung und ärztliche Versorgung sind nun kostenpflichtig, Miete
muss auch für Sozialwohnungen gezahlt werden.
Während es überhaupt keine Arbeitslosigkeit auf
den Seychellen gibt, aufgrund von Tourismus und
Fischerei, bleiben die Lebenshaltungskosten und
Energie-Preise sehr hoch. Abgesehen von tropischen Früchten, Gemüse und Fisch müssen alle
Nahrungsmittel und Haushaltsgeräte importiert
werden. Nichtsdestotrotz sind die Seychellen auf
dem ersten Platz der afrikanischen Länder im Human Development Index der Vereinten Nationen.
Blue Economy
Um ihre Zukunft sicher zu stellen, haben
sich die Seychellois auf das Konzept einer
Blue Economy eingeschworen. Das Konzept
ist eine alternative wirtschafts-politische
Herangehensweise, die zum einen die
Ozeane langfristig schützen soll. Gleichzeitig
soll das Konzept aber auch zum Wirtschaftswachstum beitragen. Mit der Blue Economy
planen die Seychellen, die Ent-wicklung
ihres Landes weiter voranzutreiben, und
gleichzeitig den Indischen Ozean für
künftige Generationen zu erhalten.
Blue Economy
To ensure their future, the Seychellois
have committed to the concept of Blue
Economy. The concept is an alternative
economic approach which focuses on
sustainably protecting the Ocean while at
the same time creating economic growth.
With the Blue Economy, the Seychelles plan
on developing their country, while at the
same time preserving the ocean for future
generations.

Ländern zu koordinieren und zu verbessern.
Ich kümmere mich darum, dass wir die verschiedenen Zusagen unserer beiden Länder
auch umsetzen.

Was gefällt Ihnen und was gefällt Ihnen
nicht an Deutschland?
Als ich 2013 für einen Diplomatenlehrgang
nach Deutschland gereist bin, habe ich viel
über deutsche Kultur, Politik und Geschichte
lernen können. Sogar etwas Deutsch habe
ich gelernt, was einfacher war als gedacht.
Was mir nicht gefällt: es ist zu weit weg.

Wie würden Sie einen Deutschen von einer
Reise auf die Seychellen überzeugen?
Tropische Inselstimmung, Sonne, Sand &
Meer, freundliche Menschen, Inseltouren
und Ruhe. Die kreolische Küche ist einzigartig und verbindet französische Elemente
mit der Exotik indischer Gerichte und
den pikanten Gewürzen des Orients. Ich
empfehle Oktopus, überzogen mit einer
Chilisauce, Ingwer und Knoblauch.
What is your job at the German Desk?
To manage and improve cooperation between our countries. I follow up on the various bilateral commitments to ensure that
they materialize within reasonable time.
What do you like and dislike about
Germany?
In 2013, I visited Germany for a diplomatic
training course and I was very impressed to
learn more about German culture, politics
and history. I even learned some German
which was easier than I expected. Only
thing I dislike about Germany: geographically, it should have been closer.
What would you tell to convince a German
to visit Seychelles?
What to expect and enjoy: the tropical
island vibe, sun, sand & sea, friendly people,
island hopping and tranquillity. The creole
cuisine is unique and features the subtleties and nuances of French cooking, the
exoticism of Indian dishes and the piquant
flavours of the Orient. Octopus coated
with a sauce of crushed chillies, ginger and
garlic? Delicious!

a German Week in Kenya. Due to many
visitors during around 20 events, the Week
was a great success. For this successful
week we would like to say thank you to the

>> Tourism Good news for travelers!
Starting October 2015, Lufthansa will offer direct flights between Frankfurt and
Nairobi. With at least four flights a week,
Lufthansa wants to expand its business
in Nairobi. The new flight programme will
facilitate trips for tourists and business
people.
>> Tourismus Gute Neuigkeiten für Reisende! Ab Oktober 2015 wird Lufthansa
Direktflüge zwischen Frankfurt und Nairobi anbieten. Mit vier Flügen pro Woche
will Lufthansa sein Geschäft in Nairobi
weiter ausbauen. Der neue Flugplan wird
Reisen für Touristen und Geschäftsleute
deutlich erleichtern.
>> Culture The German Embassy once
again sponsored the Lake Turkana. The
objective is to support and promote Kenyan cultural heritage and social cohesion
in Northern Kenya. Guest of Honor Aden
Duale also witnessed various music performances as well as fashion shows.

gratulierte den Schülern für das Erreichen
des Abiturs und dankte Eltern sowie Lehrern für ihren großen Einsatz bei der
Unterstützung der Schüler.

Stipendien für Studenten
der Garissa University
300 Studenten der Garissa University, die das tödliche Attentat am 2.
April 2015 überlebt haben, erhielten
Stipendien für die Fortführung ihrer
Studien. Die Stipendien wurden durch
den Deutschen Akademischen
Austauschdienst und das deutsche
Entwicklungsministerium vergeben. Botschafter Peschke lobte das
Programm als Zeichen der Solidarität
mit Kenia. Die Stipendien sollen den
Studenten helfen, einen Weg in ein normales Leben zurück zu finden.

300 students of Garissa University College
who survived the deadly attack on 2 April
2015 received scholarships for the continuation of their studies. The scholarships
were awarded by the German Academic
Exchange Service and the German Ministry
for Development. Ambassador Peschke
praised the programme as a sign of solidarity with Kenya, helping students to find
their way back into normal life.
