Deutsche Kultur in Kenia
Das Goethe-Institut vermittelt seit 50 Jahren
deutsche Sprache und Kultur in Kenia.
as Goethe-Institut Kenia wurde am 3.
April 1963 eröffnet, und feiert in diesem
Jahr sein 50-jähriges Bestehen gemeinsam mit dem Gastland Kenia, das im Dezember
1963 seine Unabhängigkeit erlangte.
Als Kulturinstitut der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
fördert das Goethe-Institut (GI) die Kenntnis der
deutschen Sprache im Ausland und die internationale kulturelle Zusammenarbeit. Das Institut vermittelt ein umfassendes Deutschlandbild durch Information über das kulturelle, gesellschaftliche und
politische Leben und ermöglicht Bildungsangebote
für eine weltweite Lerngemeinschaft.
In Sprachkursen, Workshops und Lehrerseminaren vermittelt und fördert das GI die deutsche
Sprache, nicht nur in Nairobi, sondern gemeinsam
mit kenianischen Partnern auch in anderen Teilen
des Landes und in Nachbarländern. Das umfangreiche und international standardisierte Prüfungssystem ermöglicht Absolventen einen zertifizierten
Abschluss gemäß des gemeinsamen Europäischen
Referenzrahmens für Sprachen. [Fortsetzung S.2]

German Culture
in Kenya
The Goethe-Institut promotes
German language and culture
in Kenya since 50 years.
The Goethe-Institut Kenya was
opened on 3 April 1963, and celebrates its 50th anniversary this
year just like the host country
Kenya which gained her independence in December 1963.
As the cultural institute of the
Federal Republic of Germany, the
Goethe-Institut (GI) promotes
the teaching of German abroad
as well as international cultural
cooperation. The GI conveys a
comprehensive picture of Germany through information about
the cultural, societal and political
life, as well as educational opportunities for an international
community of students. Through
language classes, workshops
and teachers’ seminars the GI
teaches and promotes the German

Am 22. Oktober 2013 trat das neue Parlament zum ersten
Mal seit der Bundestagswahl zusammen. Die CDU (311
Sitze) ist die stärkste Fraktion, gefolgt von SPD (193), Die
Linke (64) und Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (63)  Deutsche
Haushalte haben erstmals mehr Mobiltelefone als
Festnetzanschlüsse  Facebook (82,7%), YouTube
(51,8%) und XING (33,6%) sind die beliebtesten
sozialen Netzwerke der Deutschen.
On 22 October 2013, the new German Parliament came
together for the first time since the election. The CDU (311
seats, politically centre-right) is the largest group, followed

um einen 50. Jahrestag: sogar etwas älter
als der Staat Kenia ist das Goethe-Institut
in Kenia. Man könnte darüber streiten, ob
es bekannter ist wegen seiner Sprachkurse,
mit denen es vielen Kenianern die Sprache
Goethes nahe gebracht hat oder wegen
seiner kulturellen Veranstaltungen, mit
denen es ein Deutschlandbild auf andere
Weise vermittelt hat: „Die Kunst ist eine Vermittlerin des Unaussprechlichen“ (natürlich
von Goethe). Das Goethe-Institut hat es geschafft, in 50 Jahren in Kenia immer wieder
aufs Neue junge Menschen anzusprechen
und für seine Arbeit zu interessieren – es
ist ihm gelungen, einem weiteren Zitat
von Goethe Folge zu leisten: „Lerne alt zu
werden mit einem jungen Herzen.“

For the second time in a row, Habari is
dedicated to the commemoration of yet
another 50th Anniversary. The GoetheInstitut Kenya is slightly older than the
Republic of Kenya. One could argue if the
Institute is more famous for its language
courses or for the broad range of cultural events it organises in the promotion
of German culture: „Art is a mediatrix of
the unspeakable“ (by Goethe of course).
During its 50-year presence in Kenya,
the Goethe Institute has managed to
address many young people as well as
to win their interest in its work – In this
way, the Institute has indeed realised a
further quote by von Goethe, namely:
„Learn to grow old with a young heart.“

unterstützt den Deutschunterricht an
Schulen in ganz Ostafrika, wobei der
Schwerpunkt auf der Partnerschulinitiative liegt. Die Initiative fördert die Vernetzung von Schulen und schafft damit eine
vielfältige Beziehung zu Deutschland.
Diese zeichnet sich besonders durch kulturelle Projekte, Stipendien in Deutschland
und Workshops aus.
In der Bibliothek und Mediathek bietet
das Goethe-Institut diverse Druck-, Audio- und Videoerzeugnisse an und eröffnet
seinen Kunden Zugang zu verschiedenen
Online-Datenbanken. Unter anderem wird
ein e-Bibliotheksdienst angeboten, wo-

durch e-Books, Zeitschriften und Videos
rund um die Uhr abrufbar sind. Außerdem
arbeitet das GI in enger Partnerschaft mit
Interessenverbänden der kenianischen
Kultur- und Bibliotheksszene zusammen.
Die Aktivitäten des Kulturprogramms
wie Kunstausstellungen, Film-, Musik-,
Tanz- und Wortveranstaltungen widmen
sich neben der deutschen Kultur auch der
Unterstützung und Stärkung der lokalen
kulturellen Szene. Künstler, Akademiker
und Schriftsteller sind aktiv in unsere Projekte eingebunden.
Die Arbeit des GI basiert auf Konzepten
und reicht von fachbezogenen Projekten für
ein professionelles Publikum bis hin zu PopEvents, Partys und Konzerten. Ein spezieller Fokus auf liegt auf Veranstaltungen, die
teilweise in Buch- oder CD-Form veröffentlicht werden. Auf diese Weise wird die Szene
transparent gemacht und die Informationen

jects, scholarships in Germany and workshops.
In its library and media center the GI offers
diverse print-, audio- and video products and
grants its customers access to several online
databases. Amongst other things the GI provides an e-library service, which enables its
customers to borrow e-books, e-newspapers
and e-videos around-the-clock. The GI also
cooperates closely with stakeholders of the
Kenyan cultural and library scene.
Besides promoting German culture in
Kenya, the cultural programme department
of the Goethe-Institut Kenya supports and
strengthens the local cultural scene through
art exhibitions, film, music, dance and spoken word events. Artists, academics and writers are actively involved in many projects.
The GI's concept-based work ranges from
specialized projects for a professional audience to pop events, parties and concerts. It
has a special focus on events which are partially published in books or CD’s. In this way
the GI makes the scene more transparent

spectrum ranges from art projects and
cultural practice to knowledge production

hre ersten Wochen in Nairobi?
Beeindruckend. Ich habe starke und
motivierte Kolleginnen und Kollegen kennengelernt, gut besuchte Veranstaltungen
mit einem breiten Spektrum an Themen
erlebt und engagierte Lehrende und
Lernende in unseren Deutschkursen gesehen. Dabei bin ich Menschen begegnet, die
selbst viel zu bieten haben und gleichzeitig
neugierig auf anderes sind. Ich freue mich
auf die kommenden Jahre!
How have the first few weeks in
Nairobi been?
Impressive. I met committed and dynamic colleagues at the Goethe-Institute,
well frequented events with a wide range
of topics and active teachers and students in our German classes. I have met
people who have plenty to offer and are
curious about the other/s at the same
time. I am very much looking forward to
the upcoming years!
Was haben Sie bisher gemacht?
Ich war an den Goethe-Instituten in Warschau, Sarajevo und Athen tätig und habe
davor über Zivilgesellschaften in Transformationsprozessen gearbeitet. Gesellschaften im
Umbruch, im Aufbruch, interessieren mich.
What did you do so far?
I worked at the Goethe-Institutes in
Warsaw, Sarajevo and Athens. I have also
done work on transformation processes
and civil society. The dynamics of a society
about to alternate, change and shift
I find interesting.

>> Bildung Vom 24.-26. Oktober fand in
Nairobi unter Beteiligung des DAAD, der
Hochschulrektorenkonferenz und der
Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) eine Konferenz statt, auf
der die Vernetzung von Hochschulen mit
der Wirtschaft diskutiert wurde.
>> Education The Academia-Private Sector
Partnership Forum which took place 24-26
October in Nairobi aimed at bridging higher
education and the private sector. The conference was co-hosted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Rectors’ Conference and the GIZ.
>> Seychellen Zwischen dem 7. und 19.
Oktober 2013 machte die ca. 200-Mann
starke Crew der Fregatte Niedersachsen
ihren "Boxenstop" auf den Seychellen.
Die Fregatte ist im Rahmen der EUgeführten Operation ATALANTA am Horn
von Afrika eingesetzt. Die Tätigkeiten der
Piraten sind seit Beginn der Mission signifikant zurückgegangen.
>> Seychelles The German frigate „Niedersachsen“ and its crew of 200 sailors
stopped over on the Seychelles between
the 7 and 19 October 2013. The frigate
takes part in the ATALANTA operation
headed by the European Union which
tackles piracy off the Horn of Africa. Piracy
activity has significantly dropped since the
start of the operation.
>> Wirtschaft Im Rahmen einer Delegationsreise der deutschen Solar-Industrie
fand am 29.10. in Nairobi eine Konferenz
statt, die sich mit erneuerbaren Energien
und insbesondere der Solarenergie für
die Energie- und Stromversorgung Kenias befasste. Durch Besuche der Delegation in Mombasa und Kisumu sollen
auch die dortigen Bedingungen erkundet werden.
>> Business Representatives of the German solar industry visited Kenya in order
to familiarize themselves with the potential for renewable energies and investment opportunities. In this context,
they participated in a conference held
in Nairobi on 29 October and travelled to
Mombasa and Kisumu to assess the local
conditions and state of affairs of energy
and power supply.
>> Somalia Deutschland erneuert und
intensiviert seine Entwicklungszusammenarbeit mit Somalia, um den New Deal
Prozess zu unterstützen, der Staatsaufbau und Friedenssicherung zum Ziel hat.
Zu diesem Zweck hat die Botschaft Ende
Oktober an Veranstaltungen in Mogadischu und Hargeisa teilgenommen. Erstmals war Deutschland damit auch beim
High-Level Development Partners Forum
in Somaliland vertreten.
>> Somalia Germany is about to renew its development cooperation with
Somalia in order to jointly support the
New Deal Process focussing on stateand peace-building in Somalia. For this
purpose, the German Embassy participated end of October in two events in
Mogadishu and Hargeisa. For the first
time, Germany was represented at the
High-Level Development Partners Forum
in Somaliland.

Willkommen, Herr
Botschafter!
Der designierte deutsche Botschafter für
Kenia, Andreas Peschke, ist Ende Oktober
in Nairobi eingetroffen. Vor seiner Zeit in
Kenia war der gelernte Afrikanist unter
anderem auf Posten in Nigeria. Zuletzt war
Herr Peschke der Sprecher des Auswärtigen
Amtes in Berlin. Im Namen der gesamten
Botschaft wünschen wir Karibu sana!

Your Excellency
German Ambassador-designate to Kenya,
Andreas Peschke, has arrived in Nairobi at the
end of October. Before joining the Embassy
in Kenya, the Africanist was posted among
other countries to Nigeria. Recently, Mr.
Peschke was the official spokesman of the
German Foreign Ministry. In the name of the
whole Embassy we wish you Karibu sana!

das jährliche Schulfest statt, zu dem alle Schüler, Eltern und Partner
eingeladen wurden.
