The Most Holy Trinity - St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church
The Most Holy Trinity
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, usually shortened to Trinity Sunday,
comes each year a week after Pentecost. With the coming of the Holy Spirit,
God’s revelation of himself was complete. It is the one feast that celebrates
God’s own divine being The apostles and the other first Christians were
Jewish, like Jesus himself, and held fast to the Old Testament revelation that
there is only one God. But they also came to know that Jesus was more than
just an amazing leader. They realized that he was God in human form, and that
realization was sealed by his Resurrection. And when the Holy Spirit came
upon them after the Ascension, they recognized that God was still working
among them, even though Jesus had gone to heaven.
There had been hints of the Trinity throughout Jesus’ earthly ministry. He had
referred to God as his Father, with whom he is united but still distinct. He had taught about the Holy Spirit, who
would be with his followers as a personal agent, not just as a force. The union was clearly in evidence at Jesus’
Baptism, when the Father announced that Jesus is his Son, and the Holy Spirit descended to strengthen him.
The mystery of the Holy Trinity is for most of us beyond our comprehension. How can there be three separate
entities; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit - yet all be the same God? Because it is difficult for us to
fully grasp, this is a basic part of our Catholic faith. You may recall that St. Patrick explained it to the Irish by
holding up a shamrock, which had three leaves. He pointed out that there were three distinct leaves, but only
one shamrock.
In the second reading from his second letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul is concluding his letter. Our translation
states “Mend your ways; encourage one another; agree with one another.” This is excellent advice always, but
as is often the case, there is more depth to this statement than we may realize. The term “mend your ways” was
“be complete” or “be perfected” in the original Greek (katartizesthe). The Holy Trinity makes God “complete”
and “perfect” in so many ways. That is beyond our capabilities, of course, but we can still strive to make
ourselves “complete.” One of the ways to do that is to adopt stewardship as a way of life, a type of living
which has us striving daily to fulfill our role in the Church and to respond to our Baptismal calling.

For parish verification, required for baptisms, marriages, religious
education class participation and Catholic school admittance, a person
MUST be registered in the Parish, attend Mass regularly, and be involved
in discipleship (time, talent, and treasure). Participation in our Parish
offertory is the primary means we have for this verification. Please use
offertory envelopes or online services to ensure that your financial
contributions are recognized. If you are unable to contribute financially,
please make a notation of your prayerful support on your envelope and
place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued
participation and you will not be moved to inactive status.

St. Jude Teens Receive Highest Awards at Graduation
Congratulations to Katie Hearn and Will Gillett
Two St. Jude teens were recognized at their high school graduations for their involvement at their school, church and
community. We congratulate both of them and wish them our blessings as they embark on their college careers.
Will Gillett was recognized as the “outstanding senior” at St. Pius X High School (SPX).
Will has been recognized as a leader through his entrepreneurial efforts, involvement in
extracurricular activities at school and his service to our parish. Will established a photography
business and routinely takes photographs for our First Eucharist Masses and SPX athletic events.
At school, he was a member of the swim and dive team, a student ambassador, a Lion Leader,
and an altar server. Student ambassadors give campus tours and speak to elementary schools
about St. Pius, acting as “the face of St. Pius.” Lion Leaders mentor incoming freshmen. At
St. Jude, in addition to taking photographs for us, Will has served as an altar server and
extraordinary minister of Holy Eucharist. Will is the son of Jeff and Kathy Gillett and the
brother of Jack, Drew and Kate. He will attend Georgia College and State University this fall
and plans to major in business.
Katie Hearn was awarded the Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory Award at Marist School. Each
year the Archbishop confers a special award to the senior girl and boy who have achieved
excellence in the study of the Catholic faith and have given service to their school, parish or
community. Katie is the daughter of Michael and Betsy Hearn and has a younger sibling,
Jack. Katie has served as a lector at our Life Teen masses. She served on the Senior Emmaus
Board at Marist, and as both a retreat leader and retreat trainer in 10th-12th grades. During her
senior year, Katie completed 100 hours of community service through Marist, with volunteer
efforts supporting Atlanta's community tables, homeless shelters, children's centers and Habitat
for Humanity. Her interests have expanded to include international ministry and she spent her
Spring Break with Amigos for Christ on a Marist mission trip to Chinandega, Nicaragua. Katie
will return to Nicaragua this July with the St. Jude mission trip to Chinandega, having recruited several of her classmates
to join her! Katie will begin her freshman year at the University of Notre Dame this fall where she plans to continue her
active ministry and to pursue studies in biology.
Take Home the Elijah Cup
Quo Vadis Retreat
Pray for Vocations
Quo Vadis is a retreat sponsored by the Archdiocesan
Vocations Office for young high school men (10th grade
through graduated seniors) who are open to considering
God’s calling in their lives. The retreat will be held on
July 22-24 at Camp Gideon in Acworth. For more
information, visit www.calledbychrist/quovadis or
contact the Office of Vocations at 404-920-7460 or
[email protected].
This month, one of our parishioners, Tim Nadolski will
became a deacon as he finishes his studies to be ordained
a priest in 2015. Please consider signing up for the Elijah
Cup and pray for an increase in vocations. Each week at
Sunday Mass the celebrant will use the Elijah Cup as the
chalice and then calls a family, individual, or couple forward
to receive the Elijah Cup. They receive a blessing and take
the cup home, putting it in a place of honor. Each day for a
week, they pray for an increase and perseverance of
vocations. A prayer journal also travels with the Elijah Cup.
Each week the family, individual, or couple that has the cup
enters a thought, prayer, or scripture verse. To sign up for the
Elijah Cup, please visit www.stjudeatlanta.net/elijah. The
password to access the sign-up page is elijah.

hope that you and your family will join us in the tent
outside of church for food and fellowship after the

calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained
faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist,
SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of
Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the
freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with
human dignity and the Church's teaching.
We ask that you join other Catholics in fourteen days of
prayer, action and study for religious freedom in the U.S.
and abroad. Please visit www.usccb.org and

Summer Lunch Bag Food Drive
Community Assistance Center (CAC)
Please donate to CAC’s summer lunch bag program and help
feed local children this summer. Many families who need
assistance with feeding their children during the summer
months. Food donations typically decrease in the summer
months leaving the pantry low on food. However, requests
for food increase in the summer when children who get free
meals at school are home and parents struggle to provide
enough food for them. A CAC lunch bag feeds a child for 5
days with easy to prepare foods that they can make
themselves. Visit www.ourcac.org for a list of needed items.
Thank you for feeding a hungry child!

EDGE Midweek Recharge
Car Wash Fundraiser - Mission Trip
All middle school students
(rising 6– 8 grade) are invited
to join us on Wednesday
evenings this summer for our midweek recharge. We will
meet for 6:00PM Mass on Wednesdays in June and July
followed by prayer time. It is a summer challenge to set
aside one hour per week to spend with God.
Why should I attend?
• Prayer brings us into closer relationship with God.
• Prayer helps us to resist temptations and grow in virtue.
• Prayer removes our fear.
• Prayer increases our energy to do good things and
gives us a second wind to “run the race” of faith.
• Prayer fills our hearts and souls with faith, hope, and
love.
We hope all middle schoolers rise up to the challenge!

Adore the Lord in Holy Attire
Proper Dress for Mass
Now that we are experiencing the hot and humid summer
weather in Atlanta, we want to remind you about the
proper attire to wear to Mass. Please do not wear shorts,
tank tops, short skirts, sleeveless shirts, shirts that
don't cover the shoulders, tops with plunging necklines,
t-shirts with inappropriate sayings, clothes that bare your
midriff, flip-flops or caps to Mass. What we wear says a
great deal about what we value. We usually dress well
when we go to things that are important to us, and as
Catholics, this is the most important thing that we will do
each week. The manner in which we dress is part of the
reverence that is shown to the Lord present in the
Eucharist as well as respect shown for God's holy people.
Summer Insanctity Lock In
To be rescheduled to a later date. Check
back for details.
Laser Tag and Game Night
All high school teens are invited to join us for an evening
of laser tag at Sandy Springs Funhouse after the 5:00PM
Mass on Sunday, June 22. The cost is $25 per teen. On
Sunday, June 29 we will have a game night in the Youth
Center after Mass. Please visit www.saintjudeyouth.com
for details on these and other summer events.
Page 9
For the past two years, St. Jude families
have been going to Chinandega as
co-missionaries to improve the water
and sanitation conditions in rural
Nicaragua by installing pipelines to
clean water sources.
A car wash fundraiser will take place during all Sunday
Masses TODAY. Cars can pull right in and be washed or
left to be cleaned during Mass. Proceeds will help
defray the trip costs for this summer incurred by the
missionaries.
We still have limited space available and would love for
you to join us. To register for the 2014 Mission Trip
please visit www.saintjudeyouth.com. If you or someone
you know would like to support the mission but can’t
make the actual trip, please contact Kevin Woods at
[email protected] (subject line: Amigos for
Christ) to discuss some ways in which you can become a
mission partner to those who are sent out to Nicaragua.
We ask that everyone please keep us in prayer as we
begin the preparation stages for what will be a eye
opening weekend for our missionaries, the community we
will serve in Nicaragua, and those supporting us “back
home.” For more information please visit
www.stjudeatlanta.net or www.saintjudeyouth.com.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.”
John 3:16a
LIVING GOD’S WORD
The Corinthians didn’t always show forth the love of the
Trinity in their community. That is why Paul reminds them
to “mend your ways.” How shall we respond to Paul’s
encouragement to “agree with one another, live in peace”
so that “the God of love and peace” will be with us today?

PRAYING PACEM IN TERRIS
The Archdiocese of Atlanta is asking that
we pray and reflect on excerpts from Pope
John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris encyclical
during the 2013-14 liturgical year.
Hence, a regime which governs solely or
mainly by means of threats and intimidation or promises
of reward, provides men with no effective incentive to
work for the common good. And even if it did, it would
certainly be offensive to the dignity of free and rational
human beings. Authority is before all else a moral force.
For this reason the appeal of rulers should be to the
individual conscience, to the duty which every man has
of voluntarily contributing to the common good. But since
all men are equal in natural dignity, no man has the
capacity to force internal compliance on another. Only
God can do that, for He alone scrutinizes and judges the
secret counsels of the heart.
Hence, representatives of the State have no power to bind
men in conscience, unless their own authority is tied to
God's authority, and is a participation in it.(48-49)
Father’s Day Novena
On the nine days following Father’s Day, living and
deceased fathers will be remembered during our weekday
7:30AM daily Mass, Saturday 8:30AM daily Mass and
7:00AM Sunday Mass. To include a name in the novena,
please fill out the Father’s Day envelope in your monthly
collection mailing or pick up an envelope from the parish
office. All envelopes will be placed under the altar for the
duration of the novena. If you would like a special card to let
the father know that they are being remembered at our
Masses, please stop by the parish office.
Celebrating Your 50th or 60th Anniversary?
Ministry Catalog Sponsors Needed

couples married in 1964 and 1954 with an invitation to a
Golden/Diamond Wedding Anniversary Mass on
Saturday, October 4 at 12:00PM at St. Brigid Catholic
Church in Roswell. A reception will follow for the
celebratory couples and their families. Space is limited.

Each year we produce a Ministry Catalog that is sent to all of
our parishioners. This catalog provides detailed descriptions
about each of our ministries and the many opportunities that
we have to share our skills and talents with our parish and
the community. In order to produce this catalog, we need
sponsors to purchase ads. If you, as a business owner, or the
company you work for may be interested in purchasing an
ad, please contact Carol Cuviello with J.S. Paluch at
