highlight MUNICIPALITY OF CULTURE – MACHICO 2011 In July 1419 João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão “of the islands” arrived at the beautiful beach of Machico, opening the glorious and epic adventure of the Portuguese discoveries. The first Mass celebrated in Madeira by Franciscan priests, was held in this villa, on july 2nd - the day of Santa Isabel, who have accompanied the expedition as an appreciation and joy of its discovery. Many hypotheses have been raised on the origin of the name of Machico. The best known, although no less controversy, is the romantic legend of the two English lovers, Robert Machin and Anne d’Arfet. The name of this town seems to follow the corruption of the word Machin. On May 8th of 1440 the Prince D. Henrique donates to Tristão Vaz Teixeira and to his descendants the command of Machico (from Ponta da Oliveira, in Canico, to the Ponta de S. Lourenço, and from here to Porto Moniz). This way, Machico becomes the first post of command in the archipelago of Madeira. After Santa Cruz, the city of Machico welcomes the Municipality of Culture 2011, an opportunity for the council, as in previous ones, to become better known, in cultural terms, by undertaking a series of initiatives that highlight traditions, arts, local culture and heritage. 2 exhibitions “OJODEPEZ 2009 Award” Until February 5th Display of a selection of awarded photo reports Fnac Gallery - Madeira Shopping Sunday to Thursday: 10a.m. – 11p.m. Friday and Saturday: 10a.m. – 12p.m. http://cultura.fnac.pt/agenda “Apontamentos” Until February 13th Sculpture and drawing by Martim Velosa Casa das Mudas Art Gallery Vale dos Amores – Calheta Tuesday to Sunday: 10a.m. - 1p.m.; 2p.m. - 6p.m. www.centrodasartes.com Documentary Exhibition: Archives of the Jaime Moniz Secondary School (Liceu) Until February 25th Madeira’s Regional Archives – Reading Room Caminho dos Álamos, 35 - Funchal Phone: 291 708 400 Monday to Friday: 9.30a.m. to 7.45p.m. Saturday: 9.30a.m. to 3p.m. Org.: Department of Cultural Affairs/Madeira Regional Archives www.arquivo-madeira.org 2nd Edition of the Youth International Art Forum - “Eugénia Bettencourt da Câmara: “Children’s to Humanity Art Project” Until February 26th “Electricity Museum” Casa da Luz Casa da Cultura de Santana Centro Cívico do Estreito de Câmara de Lobos Org. After a period away from the usual programming, the MCO opened its season 2010/2011, last December in a concert with the Portuguese guitar player Pedro Jóia. It was a world première of a piece in three movements - «Evocação do Fado Menor». The concert also marked the début of the MCO new official venue, a space that properly suits its concerts’ performance with a unique feature in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, bandshell (a music / dance venue typically used by bands and orchestras), allowing audience and performers to largely enjoy each concert. For this month the MCO presents nine concerts, divided in three concert venues, the Electricity Museum - Casa da Luz, Funchal City Hall and the CS Madeira Hotel. 6 www.ocmadeira.pt music / dance Madeira Classical Orchestra presents: February 3rd – 9p.m. Laurissilva Series – Complete Mendelssohn Symphonies Concerto for flute and orchestra Rui Massena, conductor Mafalda Carvalho, flute Madeira Tecnopólo – Sala Ursa Maior February 5th – 9p.m. “Portugal vs. Hungary!” “Cinco Ventos” – Madeira Wind Quintet CS Madeira Hotel February 8th – 9p.m. music / dance “Paintings for a brass exhibition” Madeira Brass Ensemble Funchal City Hall February 10th – 9p.m. “Latin Music” Ensemble XXI Saens, Romero and Ponce “Casa da Luz” - Electricity Museum February 12th – 9p.m. Scandinavian and Hungarian composers Nielsen, Grieg, Ligeti and Farka “Quinteto Atlântida” - Madeira Winds CS Madeira Hotel February 19th – 9p.m. “Portugal vs. Hungary!” “Cinco Ventos” – Madeira Wind Quintet CS Madeira Hotel February 22nd – 9p.m. Miniature for Quartet “Madeira Clássico” – String Quartet Funchal City Hall 7 February 24th – 9p.m. Scandinavian and Hungarian composers Nielsen, Grieg, Ligeti and Farka “Quinteto Atlântida” - Madeira Winds “Casa da Luz” - Electricity Museum February 26th – 9p.m. Mozart and classics for strings “Madeira Camerata” CS Madeira Hotel The Madeira Music Conservatory and the Study Centre of Atlantic History promote a series of concerts on the following days: February 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th – 9p.m. February 4th – Violin music / dance Melissa Lala, 1st level of the Professional Instrument Course (PIC)/ Unisonous February 11th – Guitar Rebeca Oliveira, 1st level of the PIC and Sara Freitas of the 3rd level of the PIC February 18th – String Quartet Yelizaveta Valdman and Filipe Abreu of the 3rd level of the PIC Volodymir Petryako, Pedro Silva, Melissa Lala, Alexandra Silva, Sérgio Sousa of the 1st level of the PIC and Anna Juhász of the 1st level of the Basic Course February 25th –Trombones Quartet Joana Costa PI, Fábio Agrela of the 2nd level of the PIC, Hugo Santos of the 8th level and Professors Luís Rodrigues and Pedro Pinto CEHA - Auditorium Free Admission Madeira Mandolin Orchestra February 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th – 9p.m. English Church – Funchal 8 Madeira’s Department of Artistic Education presents: February 6th – 10a.m. Regina Pacis Vocal Ensemble Canhas’ Church - Ponta do Sol February 12th – 6p.m. Consort Bisel with lively audience performance RDP – Madeira Auditorium February 13th – 5p.m. “The Law of the Jungle” Performance by the Brass Quintet and Animation Group Centro Cívico do Porto da Cruz February 13th – 5p.m. “Si Que Brade” with lively audience performance Centro Cívico do Curral das Freiras Wind Orchestra Casa das Mudas Arts Centre – Calheta February 26th – 9p.m. “In Black and White” Performance by Incorporarte Dance Group, New Sounds Trio and Clarinet Ensemble Casa das Mudas Arts Centre – Calheta February 27th – 5p.m. Accordion Ensemble Seixal Parochial Hall The Associação Amigos do Conservatório de Música da Madeira presents: February 15th – 9.30p.m. Violin and Piano Recital Karlo Fio & Robert Andres Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Gershwin, Korngold Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre February 20th -6p.m. Complete Piano Works Cycle Commemorating Chopin’s Birth – 6th Concert “24 Preludes, Mazurcas, Polish…” Artur Pizarro, piano Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre 9 music / dance February 20th - 6p.m. OCEANS OF WINE.
