CARNIVAL
The magic, the colour and fun are back! The month of February
presents us another joyous occasion that delights all of those who
visit the island in this time of the year: Carnival.
This year, fantasy and fun appear once again side by side at the
sound of samba and under the zodiac thematic.
In Funchal, on the night of February 18th it’s time for the
Great Allegoric Parade, which this year has a different itinerary.
All carnival groups will concentrate at the Praça da Automonia and
taking off from there, along the Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades
Madeirenses, Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and ending at the Praça
do Mar.
On Shrove Tuesday, the 21st of February, it’s time for the
Fun Parade with lots of humour and satire, closing this year’s
celebrations.
The “Compadres” Festival, in Santana, is the first event on the
2nd weekend of February, marking the beginning of celebrations
throughout the island.

RECREIO MUSICAL 99TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT AT
THE ENGLISH CHURCH
Almost ten decades of existence distinguished by rigour and
professionalism in favour of art. Music has transformed this musical group,
a regional reference with national and international projection.
The group’s most visible musical expression is the Madeira Mandolin
Orchestra, protagonist of hundreds of concerts in the region, in Portugal
mainland and other European countries, where we can highlight,
in 2002, the recital for the Queen of England Jubilee
Celebrations, Elisabeth II, in Saint George’s Chapel, Windsor.
This group first started with the Associação Recreio Musical
União da Mocidade in February 18th of 1913 in São Roque –
Funchal.
The group gathers more than twenty local musicians,
being the great majority of them, young musicians who studied
music in the schools of the group. The Recreio Musical owns a vast
throughout the year, most of them performed at
the English Church, in Funchal. In the late 1920’s,
the creativity and commitment of its conductor
Ernesto Serrão, who managed the group from
1924 to 1935, contributed decisively for the
Orchestra’s qualitative reediting. Currently, the
Orchestra is conducted by Maestro Eurico Martins.
To celebrate its 99th Anniversary, the Recreio
Musical União da Mocidade will be performing a
concert led by the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra
at the English Church, in Funchal, on the 25th
of February at 9pm.

AMO-TEATRO
theatre
From February 16th to 26th, the theatrical group of Casa
do Povo da Camacha promotes the 3rd Edition of the Festival
Amo -Teatro.
After two other editions, the Experimental Theatre of
Camacha witnesses the notorious growth of this festival
in terms of calendar and participations, extending itself
to Machico Forum. This year’s edition introduces several
local amateur groups and some invited ones, with a special
highlight for the group Comuna – Research Theatre, which is
a nationally noteworthy and recognised group, established
in the 70’s by João Mota, who is the current director of the
National Theatre D. Maria II.
In addition to the stage performances, the Festival also
includes street theatre performances, a statue competition
and a carnival ball.

BOOK PRESENTATION “FEBRUARY 20TH”
BY OCTÁVIO PASSOS
“The
destruction
was
other events
heartbreaking. The shades of the
mud and rocks submerged the capital
of the region, Funchal, leaving it
unrecognizable, among some other
cities and areas through the island,
which have been devastated. The reports on the lost lives
increased hour after hour. Most of the people were in fear
because of their family and friends, the electricity and telephone
lines were dead, making it more difficult to divulge and reach the
news, and consequently, the situation became more dramatic
and despairing, raising difficulties in terms of assistance to the
ones in need and to all help requests.
Almost two years after, the reconstruction is noteworthy, but
the wounds in the people’s minds left by the destruction have
no healing. To the victims, their families, friends, to the rescue
teams and to all of those, who somehow have helped… this is a
tribute to them… I want it to become part of our visual history,
so that it may be part of everyone’s memory and collective
conscience.”
Excerpt of the introductory note by Octávio Passos.
